Something about Daft Punk
As the"Owner-Operator" for Club Verboten I can unequivically state that our"Daft Punk-Kraftwerk" night was NOT intended as any sort of joke.(Hard to remember as far back as 2001 but guarantee same would apply)In fact we had the same DP/KW party in 2008 with but a small number"believing".Felt going in to that(2008) party I would play more Kraftwerk but good crowd that turned up made their preference for Daft Punk well known.A great night which we wanted to repeat in 2009 but this time featuring more DP music. Thus we changed the name from Kraftwerk/Daft Punk to Daft Punk/Kraftwerk.An unfortunate choice of words as it turned out with the result being an event that at least 2-3 case studies could be conducted on people believing what they want to believe.
Started off when all day Thursday people were stopping by and asking if this was the place Daft Punk was going to play.At first it was amusing that anyone could think Daft Punk AND Kraftwerk were going to play in our 750 Sq.Ft.tent.Then there was the 3-4 mille it would cost.As the day went on and nearly 40 people had stopped in our mood changed. We could see that we were in for a large and, when they heard the news, unpredictable crowd.
We tried everything to get the word out.All our campers out talking to hundreds lined up.Annnouncing with a bull horn.NO daft Punk is NOT playing here.No use.Playa rumor had now morphed into DP had specifically chosen our tent as some sort of gesture(opinions varied) to the citizens of BRC.
At 10:30 part of the crowd finally rushed the tent and filled up every inch.Show due to start at 11 was quickly moved up.Played about 3o minutes of Daft Punk and one Kraftwerk tune before a Ranger made his way to the front and told me I needed to disperse the crowds which had blocked 4:30 in 4 directions or I would be"shut down".
More attempts with bullhorn and shouting were made to no avail.I then played(in order) "Que Sera Sera"(Doris Day) Yummy Yummy(Ohio Express)Simon Says"(1910 Frutgum Company)and a rousing march version of"Jesus Loves The Little Children".Reaction from crowds?Part of the show.
At this point we shut down completely for the night. Those who had stayed on were incredibly nice about it and left peacefully.Think they had fun and in any case are now part of a playa legend.
It;s funny as we have run a Depeche Mode night for 8 years and in that time not a single person has ever asked if DM was actually playing at our camp.Something about Daft Punk. Our lesson from it all was... This Is Burning Man and Burners Rock. Always for The People Omar

Ya just gotta read the WWW guide with the right amount of fucko and shenaniganers that the whole book offers. I thought it was hilarious when these (very sweet might i add) 20 year old Bman virgins came back to camp so confused. I said, oh hunnies, if you read it right it just says they are going to play Daft Punk music!!!
So yeah.....ya think, OK thats VERY Burning Man and VERY funny!!
But then Sunday rolls around and you hear rumors of Theivery Corp playign Shift camp and Hookahdome.
You laff, once again.
But then, it actually happens.
I LOVE BURNING MAN!!!
(wish I could of stayed for Theivery but my back went out and it was time to go. BUMMER....i heard it was awesome, and it really happened :) nice!

As a friend told me while i was laughing it was one of those things that you know isent going to happen but in the end you ether go and find out it isent true or risk not going just to find out you missed out. So you best just go!
Ether way i enjoyed hearing about it from just about every friend lolol

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Damn...that was fun!"

I've attended many of the special nights at Club Verboten in years past and they remain cherished "best of" memories to me. When I caught the end of the real live Infected Mushroom performance this year at Opulent Temple, it furthered my understanding of how the believability could be contagious.RedHeaven wrote:

Proubst to Club Verboten for remaining one of the brightest night spots one could ever find in the East German back allies of Black Rock City!

We would be quite remiss if we did not aknowledge the great compliment of our very distinquished and accomplished comrade. He remains a central figure in Verbotens most significant party ever,2004 Glam Rock Night and your attendance is always appreciated.

as sucker #2,869 i call bullshit on this not being completely intentional shenanigans. since when do you refer to the music you DJ as "headlining." true, it was very naive to think that Daft Punk would actually be there but it's also disingenuous to act like you weren't trying to stand out in the events guide and attract mass attention to your party with your choice of words.
the minute i got there i proceeded to grab a firm hold of the ground as the shiitakes and portobellos from my dinner's pizza quickly made my stomach go to outer space. as i lay there looking at the stars and listening to their hits being played back to back i immediately thought "yeah, there's no way they're here."
good prank assholes.

your intimate, first hand account of skinner-iarian mob psychology is a seminal piece on the subject.
double super kudos for just being the guy who stuck his finger in the bull-dyke, hoping the dam wont break...
pardon my mixed metaphors.

Well like I said people will believe what they want to believe. We have been setting up for 10 years and have no need to"attract mass attrntion"to ourselves. Why would we want such a large crowd at our tent? Why would we want the aggravation and eventual cancellation of a party we looked forward to after being a big hit in 2008? Sorry you got so worked up about it and we apologize for the wording and to all who felt mislead. For the last time it was not a prank. We would not do that to the city.Next time remember if it sounds too good to be true......

Gwahahahahaha,
We were a half block away and I could not stop laughing watching all the fresh faces wondering down d to 4:30. As I was walking out the the desert a young woman found me and asked:
"Is Daft Punk Playing at 4:30 and Extinct?"
"Yea"
"Really"
"Nope"
Dejected face, aww it was priceless.
Need more pranks, she must have been bummed when the rocket didn't fly to mars, or when she discovered that the toilets were fake, gwahahahahahahahahahaha

Kids in our camp (i.e. in their 20s) made a big deal someone was playing Daft Punk, let's all go, so I went too. I never thought the band was really there and thought it was hilarious when a Ranger had to go around the intersection with a bullhorn to clarify the obvious. It was fun, though, as the intersection was wall to wall people, that's always a good time. Yes, it was similar to the rocket ship thing, where lots of people really believed it was going to take off, an obvious violation of common sense on many levels if you stop and think a moment, but people never do. Just one reason why people are so damn entertaining.

This is one of my funniest playa memories. I remember reading about it in the WWW guide and someone at camp decided they were pretty sure it meant they were here live. I was a bit skeptical but went by myself later that night anyway. The entire block was absolutely PACKED with people and bikes, and I heard mutters of "it's on CD guys!". I heard one guy leaving Club Verboten swearing he was going to kick someone's ass. Made me LOL pretty hard!
I also have a friend who was absolutely convinced that Daft Punk were playing live. I thought the entry in the events guide made it pretty clear the camp was just going to play some DP songs, but of course she wanted to believe otherwise. I cruised over just to see how many people would believe the hype (and to hear some DP too), but I didn't expect the whole street to be choked off! Haha!!

Just like "Okenfold at Opulent Temple" rumors. I've been there every time Okenfold actually was at Opulent Temple, and been constantly amused by the times he wasn't there, but people keep saying he is/was/or had been there are it was awesome. If rumors were true, Okenfold has played Opulent Temple every night for the past four years.

A burner friend of a friend I know was invited to an orgy at Camp One with Larry Harvey and he was totally doing Jennifer Anniston during this massive orgy. That's why Camp One exists you know, so Larry Harvey and the other founders can have a plush space at Burning Man to entertain and have sex with celebrities. It's like totally elitist.C.f.M. wrote:I had sex with Larry Harvey.
