How do you become a Ranger?

A unique and distinctive culture emerges from the Burning Man experience. Rooted in the values expressed by the Ten Principles, this culture is manifested around the globe through art, communal effort, and innumerable individual acts of self-expression. To many, it is a way of life.

How do you become a Ranger?

Post by brcprincess » Sun Sep 27, 2009 3:46 am

I've often wondered what the process is for becoming a ranger.

How do you sign up? Is there any criteria involved? And what training is involved?

Any info would be great.

Thanks.

Start here, withe the volenteer questionnaire. Fill out the Ranger Specific questionnaire that will appear if you check off Rangers.
You will have to attend a training. If there isn't one near you, I think they have trainings on playa.
Then you will have an on-the-ground training at the burn. This will pair you off with an experienced ranger so you can learn what it is they do by doing it.
That's my nutshell explanation. There are refinements on that info, but that's as much as I know.

Also, you have to have been at least one time. Regardless of how much prior experience you have being a ranger.

Another requirement is that you have to be able to successfully spread rumors that aren't true, and know nothing about what is actually going on (as in events and traditions).

Another requirement is you must have opposible thumbs, but I have seen some get around this rule somehow.

I'm giving it some thought for next year.

I wear so much khaki during the day I have yet to go one day over the last three years where I am not stopped by someone asking me if I'm a ranger.

I'm rangering and doing backup medical for our regional coming up in a few weeks to get my feet wet and see how it fits.

There's training, and then there's the on playa time when an alpha ranger goes out with a mentor ranger. The mentor ranger makes recommendations about who would make a good ranger in their opinion. Sometimes the alphas don't make it, but request a second chance with a new mentor.

All rangers have to go through training each year, even the most experienced ones have to repeat the course.

I think I have that right.

We have rangers in camp, they rub off on you.

Rangers are born, not made -- but you have to cross a unicorn with an Ewok to get one.

A-ha ha ha ha ha...beechawawa! That is an awesome quote.

At first I was really bummed I couldn't ranger in BRC - I did meet one, one night...sadly I didn't get rangered - but after talking to some other people I'm not sure, despite how much I love rangering people, being a BRC ranger is for me.

You can be a Black Rock Stranger, wear a black hat and give out bad advice.

I'll even sell you a badge.

I tried to be a ranger year before this one. I applied with online volunteer form. I attended all day training at Juplaya last year. I did mentoring shift last year Monday during big blow. I was not physically prepared to walk long hours as a dirt ranger, especially during the duststorms. I was disoriented at times. A Ranger must know where he is at all times to make accurate radio reports. Physical stamina and spatial awareness are important.

If you want to be a Ranger, I suggest you start walking. Build up your stamina to be able to walk 8 hours in boots. A gift of the gab wouldn't hurt either. And always know what street and avenue you are on, and what you just passed. Be aware of your surroundings, and what is happening...

Why did you get turned down?

my guy feeling is the mentors thought I was to worried about "Rules" and enforcing them..

My natural habits is being safe and "Boy Scout"

So I made room for others... No bad feeling.. I did learn alot from the training.. 8) 8) 8)

ibdave, maybe you belong with us at Black Rock Spatial Delivery. Delivering mail/packages on the playa is a lot like Rangering, but without the sobriety.

There's always the killing a hippie and bringing back both ears and the pony tail as proof route. Those are the Blood Rangers. It's a step or two above the Dirt Rangers.
