Hey

Post by Discordia » Thu Jan 21, 2010 4:21 am

Hey

I'm 24, living in England, and hoping to attend at some stage in the mid-near future either this year or not depending on financial bananas and suchlike.

Am slightly, well, very concerned as I am completely inept and fairly incompentent and in-otherthings too about tents, rvs, and anything along those general lines. I have read the survival guide and that but I'm just not sure I'm capable-I have trouble putting up an umbrella sometimes.... (often an issue when you live in england)

Anyway, when, if, hopefully I make it over to Burning Man, I will be the one in the collapsed tent/broken down RV/without a working umbrella so come say hello! :D

The trick with tents is to buy the tent you like where you live and then set it up in your living room. The last thing you want to do is be in the middle of a dust and wind storm, trying to read the instructions of a tent you just purchased. Even worse than that is to find a part missing when you are on the playa and can't do anything about it. Buy sturdier stakes than the ones that come with the tent.

I hope you get to make it for 2010. Did you buy your ticket yet?

Not yet on the ticket- I'm waiting to see on the money first. All depends on my job and stuff. Its a big mission from the UK but definately looks worth it.

Thanks for the tent advice-a test run is probably a good move. I was thinking in a vague way of hiring a truck type thing and constructing some kinda shade structure on it/around it. So maybe I'll be the one under the collapsing truck instead of the collapsing tent.....

Unless you buy a backpacking tent (at least they're low to the ground) you may not be able to bring from England (what are baggage check fees these days?) This thing will be finely judged--easier to ship or buy here? Money, time will all factor in. There are others who attend from overseas. Talk to them.

usually with international flights you can get your bags over for free- or at least one. Just get your water once you get here or you'll go over your weight limit :)

If you can get a vango refugee dome over here, I'll buy it from you and save you shipping it back.
Can't find them second hand here.

Thanks for the welcomes :D - I have been lurking about for a while, considering going to one of the burning man pub meets in London although I don't know anyone there-should I go? Yeah.

Vango refugee tent? what might that be? I will probably buy most stuff in the US when I get there as I may not need it again. Still not sure I'm capable (more umbrella difficulties this morning) also have been attacked by a stapler.

Hmm anyway all depends on the money, think it will cost around 2 grand for me to go (that's 2 thousand for all you lovely americans)....

Any exciting weekend plans?

Any'who...DO go to any burner affiliated type get together.
If your typically a shy person, pretend that you KNOW these people, or more specifically, walk in like you used to go to elementary school with them, and you just dont remember their names or what they looked like.
Be outgoing say "hi,Im discordia", give hugs to those who are huggable.

Take a notpad or technical device to get names and numbers of those willing to give them.

Dont be creepy...heheee
Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".

It's a big dome available in the UK more than here.
Some of the best tents are made just for refugee camps.

Very probably. Then the question becomes: Do you function well in pub environments? I don't like bars, and yes, pubs can be different, because I don't do well with the noise. And I'm kind of an introvert. So, talking to people can be awkward for me. You get to be the judge of when and where you function well with strangers.

I'd die for any sort of burner meet up. The best I got is a couple of friends who've gone before who live THOUSANDS of miles away and a regional burn that is MONTHS away and ONE other friend who's never been either but she lives like 8 hours from me. You *have* to go for me!!! I can only imagine how fun it will be to meet burners!! Everyone I talk to in my tiny town says "oh wow, you're going to BM! that's neat. I wish I could go" So yes, take my excitement with you if you need that extra boost of energy/non-shyness and go rock it.

You should go to Nowhere (happens in Spain during the beginning of July...check out www.goingnowhere.org). I helped out a bit last year and it was an absolutely incredible experience - on par with the Burn. The community holds the same values as Burning Man but maintains its own identity and independence, as well as being much much smaller. Lots of Brits there, too. ;)

Look forward to seeing you out on the playa!

Yeah-I think I might go to the pub thing at some stage to meet the Burning man people. Not sure when though as requires some planning and logistical stuff. Nowhere sounds cool-I will google it.

Seems like you can buy tickets fairly late in the day so haven't made any decisions about this year/next year as it all depends on my job/boyfriend/etcetera

Hope you're all having a lovely day? Its cold in Oxford

Hi

Not sure if I'm supposed to say hi for the first time on someone else's thread or not but... HI!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in Manchester UK and just bought my first ever Burnin Ticket yesterday! Eeeeeeeeeeee! I was just searchin on google about getting flights and came across your thread Discordia. Do you know when the Londons Burning lot are meeting? I signed up for the discussion board (I think - my memory skills sound like your mechanical skills) but I haven't heard anything since...

You should just buy your ticket then you HAVE to save for it! That's what I've done - eeep! Good luck with the job anyways.

Hey, Bemused. My sister lives in Oldham and works on the other side of the valley. (I'm not completely clear on this, I think that she works outside Manchester, but on the outskirts.) Anyway, any city that has a Curry Mile and a sewer museum is a force to be reckoned with.

Hey Bemused

The info about the pub meet can be found via this link:

http://www.euroburners.org/wikka/BurningPub

It is on every third Tuesday of the month and is at the Marie Lloyd Pub nr Old Street tube station from 7 onwards. I haven't been but might go-the next one is 16th Feb.

Thats exciting that you've bought your ticket! Are you going with people? Have you planned how to get there and stuff? I really want to go-as long as I can get my job (Its temporary atm so I can apply when it becomes permanent soon) then hopefully I can go too!

That there valley is the Irwell Valley and is the best valley in the world! - Tis where I grew up. And indeed Manchester is a a force all of its own. If London is the brain then Manchester is the heart!... I must have missed the sewer museum on me travels though! I know there's hundreds of secret connecting tunnels under the city - and a ballroom apparently - but will have to dig the sewer museum out!

Maybe it's not all sewer museum. It may have been the Manchester museum. When I was there there was a Dr. Who exhibit. In one of the old mills. I'd have to check with my sister or niece.

Fantastic - thanks Discordia! Bit difficult with it being during the week for me but hopefully I'll make it down at some point.

I'm not going with anyone as yet but a few friends of friends are talking about going - though I quite like the idea of not going with a load of people I already know... past experience tells me it can be a bit cliquey/school tripish and I'm kind of past that.

An old friend lives in San Diego now so I may fly there first and get my act together then head on up. He's been before so I'm hoping he'll help me prep even if he doesn't go this year. I'm guessing everyone has to drive because how else do you transport all the water you need?!!

Best of luck with the job anyways! I bought my first house a couple of years ago and have just remortgaged it so I can do this!! :P You only live once eh?! xx
