Upset?! That was a dactylic, epodic, exquisite and pleasing bit of poetry.

this will be my second year

Post by xhoosier » Fri Mar 05, 2010 10:04 pm

and like you I was not sure what to expect, if i would fit in, etc but I will tell you that I had a blast and am looking forward to 2010. Just read the survival list and bring lots of water and a bottle to keep with you. Then relax say hi to everyone you meet and the rest will come naturally. You will be amazed who you will meet at 2 AM in some tent and then you become friends. Since you are from indiana I have to tell you that last year I was in one of the camps having a drink and i started talking to some guy in his 50's. He told me he was from northern indiana and made it there with just his backpack becuase his truck broke down in Utah. After sharing a few beers he shows me his new tattoo- brand! of the burning man. He found a camp where they were branding people. Need to say I wasm curious but had not had that much to drink. I hope to run into him again this year (good luck) and see how the rest of his burn went.

take care have a great burn!!!!

It will be hot, it will be dusty, it does get colder than you would think it should at night!! I always have a pack that will keep me going for at least 12 hours (water, dust mask, goggles, snacks, meds, a cup, gloves, etc) so when I get distracted I will not put any demands on those I am around. The words are "self reliance".

This will be my fourth burn. It took me a while to find out how I could contribute, but that was my experience, yours will probably be the same.

Black Rock City is a place where I am comfortable no matter who I am with. Just let that inner kid out and you will have a amazing experience that cannot be found anywhere else. My life is different due to my experiences at the burn. Each burn has been different. I always leave my expectations at the gate and to repeat a quote "The playa gives you what YOU NEED, not necessarily what you want."

Live, Love, Life.

Really enjoying this thread - Thanks Matthew for being so REAL

Still working on getting there this year - logistics of buying tent & airbed B4 hopping on Green Tortosie (unless I get a better offer to get me there earlier with water and food)
Seems such a long way off ...yet I DO plan ahead

I don't live half a world away, just 200 miles from the playa, and I am already actively planning. I also hope I have enough room for the couple of projects I have to haul down. I already stress about it. Not in a bad way, mind you. To think about getting myself and the basics, even the prospect of buying them here, to the playa gives me such respect for those that do. My hat's off to you, and I really hope you make it.

Thanks Mark
I know if I come with basic requirements I'll cope - methinks this amazing intentional community offers magic for those who can drop into the unknown

Not sure whether to ask for transport and help sourcing gear or do the Self Reliance thing.

Good to read threads and see the support offered to fellow Newbies

Sometimes asking for help is part of the self reliance thing - no need to do it all alone just to prove something or another.
There's lots of little things that you'll learn that would be good to bring.... but the main things are:
-water
-goggles
-face mask
-good attitude (you've already got that)

I am a Poet from Franklin, Indiana.

wow....i am SO sorry.

two strikes against him, and the kid keeps going. now That's "Gumption", misguided, but ballsy nonetheless to admit those two factoids.

I have this piece that I've been working on and I'd like to put up here. Which would be the best Forum to post it on?

:D
Post away, but... if I may.... I write magazine articles, not poetry, but I believe there is a general rule about all writing: You want to say what you have to say with as few words as possible. Remember, you are competing with the rest of the sensory-saturated world for your reader's attention, so the worst thing you can do is bore him.

This often means that you can improve your writing by removing some of it. This is called editing. So I shall edit the above paragraph, and it becomes:

Post away, but remember you can often get more said by talking less.

Now we get to your skill as a poet; now you try if you can get the same thing said, still fairly briefly,... but prettier. Maybe even with panache.

:D

This is not the piece which I was going to post last night. I got drunk and fell asleep without finishing it. This was one of the first poems I wrote, it's not very long, but anyway here it is.

Who is me? (Naked Vision)

Don't be afraid of yourself,
this is your life, everyday, all the days even the holidays,
where you dress nice & talk right & became a different person,
even your laughter wasn't the same,
Who are you supposed to be today?
A dressed up fake with a fake suit,
a fake tie and fake eyes shining on a fake mind for this remaining time,
Now driving through raindrops of a cold brisk,
door closed dripping melting fakness away to the skin naked,
towel dry bedroom sheets smoke in streams,
Now you want to be myself again?
Who is me?
2
Wailing morning glory sun drenched forests of clear blue skies,
bright translucent winds around silk dressed butterflies,
sweet angelic sighs cry silver tears in weeping corners behind coiled zippers and nude walls scorching through meadow plains burning stale eyeballs exposing naked lilies I feel, the beauty of myself,
radiating all life and loveliness,
rising it's soul from the smoldering loneliness,
shivering & quivering insane dreams racketing through ash coated fogs,
and falls sorrowing in the deepest quiet silent abyss of reason,
bashful beneath my underwear, sheltering hallowed fantasies & mad genitals sensually pulsating the organisms & thoughts I invision, the cause of myself,
mirror mysterious crooning mystical storms on the hazy outskirts of reasoning behind perimeters & shadows treating the butterflies of evermore which scatter like darkened creatures fluttering through drooping black rooms crawling toward empty windows and moons in some meaningless velvet nightmare tattering their beat they scratched from a broken downtown street or a sinking bay-side beach,
back and forth they stir sighing the sore score of a poor mans beatness of being beat and sleepless,
in the garden reflecting the naked lilies that just kept on growing within
the virgin mirror.
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on. He took a face from the ancient gallery and he walked on down the hall.

well if you are looking for a place to fully express yourself burning man is a damn good place to start.
You will be welcomed with open arms.
you'll need a lot of water, at least a gallon or two per day. very very stable living arrangements. you cant go to a store and just buy any tent and expect it to last. Me and my friend are building a hexayurt for burning man, its probably the best way to go. When you start packing the food and water I'd advise to over pack, just in case. I'm sure if you end up running low your neighbors or someone will be more than accommodating and will help you any way they can.
I hope this helped a little. I'll be seeing you guys at Black Rock!

My last tent lasted three burns and then just fell apart...

I have always packed extra, whatever. Usually someone needs something I have spares of and appreciate the offer. The playa can be a harsh mistress, but she is beautiful, loving and gives you back more than you could ever give.

Self reliance can kick you in the ass when you don't realize you need help! My last burn I ended up needing help due to sleep deprivation (don't stay up for 3 days straight!! ) and even though I did not want to ask for help, I really needed it. My friends came through and saved me a trip to the hospital due to their kindness... Thank you! ..

See ya in BRC!!

Rice.
