wow, misa ..... that looks sooooooo good .... ! yum yum i brought some mimosas....Image

dang asbestos ... it's in linoleum, too? the bottom layer is probably from the 60's .... but i'm above it, and i don't think it's getting into the air. my nose would know ... i hope. it's not a nice job, i'm only about halfway through, and some of the glue i can't get up at all. but yesterday i noticed that the leftover gluey stuff makes a pattern, so that its how i'll paint it! i'll likely use acrylic artists paint, something i have too much of lying around since i switched to oils. i did that in other rooms, and it's more durable than you might think. and it doesn't smell. but i have to finish scraping the floor and paint the rest of the kitchen and cabinets before i paint the floor ... ugh!

hope everyone has a great day!

wow, breakfast, and mimosa..........how much better can it get?
Thanks Misa and LF. you are the greatest!!

LF:
mostly, IIRC, asbestos is a problem, when floating in the air, as in dust.....and, I think, usually, from cutting it with a saw or grinding......I'd imagine scraping and prying would not present a problem.
your painting, I'm sure , will be wondrous..........

Not in linoleum, unless it's very old, possibly.
It's the adhesive used.
They used the fibers as a binder in the mixture.
Removing it usually breaks up the stuff and it goes airborne.
If it doesn't crumble, caution is still called for.
If it has any asbestos, better to test it and leave it alone if it's there.
Or have it professionally removed.
Even the binders without asbestos can be hazardous if they crumble and get airborne.
They usually used fibers of some kind, unless very new.

Seems like there is a paint that sticks to linoleum.

The mono epoxy ester becomes totally inert when cured.
No odor at all.
Just takes a long time if you put it on too thick.
It becomes one solid surface.

I agree about acrylic.
The good stuff is just too expensive for me to go out and buy it for this purpose.
Wonderful colors, of course.

There are some specialty paints that an match the acrylics now, usually made for cars, like deltron and the european equivalent.
A two part mix, with fantastic color, like the acrylics.

I would think so, but I would take no chances if there is asbestos.
Safe exposure level is 0 ppm.

Water is what we use with ground glass to suppress it, but what do you do with the powder?
That's why I quit grinding and shaping.

Yes and no on the cookies.
They are still a middle east favorite, but recipes are family secrets.
So far, I haven't managed to get a recipe from anyone.
The cookies looked like thick sugar cookies, tan in color.
So the recipes are out there somewhere.

sounds like some of you should live in a zip lock bag and breath filtered air and only eat organic celery.......Don't talk on a cell phone, watch color t.v., or walk in the sun.

"strength through adversity",
and, I paraphrase Nietzsche:

"that which does not kill, serves to make us stronger"........

we've all been exposed to asbestos, drank bad water, eaten food containing mercury.....somethings going to kill us all..........Most of us old enough, have been exposed to DDT, and, radiation, even if from radium dials on old alarm clocks......

Jeeze..............

OK, done fixing my car yet again. I really am not complaining though, it's been good to me.

We've all been exposed to a lot.
And buried a lot of people too.

The good news with asbestos is some people tolerate a high exposure.
Some die quickly from seemingly inconsequential levels.
Other than known lung compromisers like smoking, the causes are probably genetic.

I have had heavy exposure and not by choice.
I wonder how much my lung issues are related to this?
They don't normally test for it, as it is not reversible.
Am I genetically lucky or will I get bad news one day?

A doctor from the bay area being interviewed today says that a large part of her practice is people with neurological issues caused by mercury in fish, sometimes as little as two servings a week.
Oddly sushi seems to be worse for mercury.
Younger fish usually carry less, and salmon also.
Fish carry very different levels.

Most people never realize they are affected, which is the scary part to me.
Are all of us eating fish stupider, less focused because of things we aren't aware of?
The effects are measurable, if not readily perceived by the patient.

If you suffer fatigue, or mental fuzziness or lack of focus and have a fatal accident, no one will ever know why.
How often does that happen?

What about simple loss of quality of life, a real likelihood with many chemicals?
What is that worth?

Bear in mind that most chemicals legitimately used in the united states are deliberately never tested for safety, or tested elsewhere and the results kept secret.
And they have succeeded in keeping the laws intact for this.
Think it's different?
Check the law.

That's why you always hear the phrase "It hasn't been proven unsafe...yet."
And often revealed to be a lie too.

I wanted to post a photo of Commando Survival Beer, but all I can find is a mention of it.
It came in a 32 ounce camouflage can and had extra protein and vitamins.
I'm not sure what else.
Came out of chicago, as far as I can tell.

Found war beer though, with non-reflective paint, an attempt to reduce risk.

I keep listening to tracks from the Deep End in 08. I had a great time there one day with Jewel and Shoegirl. Later, as I was dancing, I looked to my left and there was my friend Dixon from Detroit dancing right next to me.

Great day, great year!
It's going to be alright.
