What will Law Enforcement decide to crack down on this year?
I've read here that it's been various activities in years past. Will this be the year they decide to crack down on nudity, public drunkenness, smoking within 20 feet of tents or other structures, or some other offense?

1) Idiots doing drugs publiclyWill this be the year they decide to crack down on....
2) Idiots peeing on the playa
3) Idiots serving minors
4) Idiots having public sex (if straight- maybe. If gay- definitely)
5) Idiots trying to sell drugs
6) Idiots acting like idiots to the LEO's
7) Idiots getting drunk and combative
Basically- don't be an Idiot and you'll be fine.

Seriously, there is no way to know what "new things" "they" are going to decide to go after. However, I have a feeling that it will be things that Idiots do because "it's Burning Man" and they don't think the laws of the county, state & country apply in BRC.
Pretend, law-wise, that you're in Reno or Vegas, but with really lax "community standards". Its really that simple.
Or you can worry about unknowables.
Your choice.

Rufi-Coladas, date rape & pedophiles/pederasts. They have a special sting operation kind of like 21 Jump Street, you know, cops that look like they are 16.
They also have new thermal goggles that pin point the E-yards out cuz they are burning up which is probable cause for search of the individual and their camp, followed by a mandatory blod draw.
Also new this year is a permanent presence at the Med tents and with REMSA. Again trying to crack down on the drug fiends and dealers. They have these nano-gps trackers they secretly tag you with and then track your movement hoping to bust you and the dealers.

I wouldn't consider any action on date rape or pedophilia as cracking down in the spirit in which I state because those are actual crimes involving acutal victims. LEAs at BM cracking down on giving a cup of coffee without a permit is cracking down for the sake of cracking down.
Make no mistake, times are changing. Rock concerts were much, much more lax in the '70s than they are now. I remember seeing Bill Graham himself with a bullhorn outside the gates at a late '70s concert at Cal Expo saying, "Alcohol is not allowed in the concert; drugs, however, are allowed in the concert." A whole era later at a mid '90s Pink Floyd concert, I a young man who stumbled into a kiosk poster, act dazed, and say, "That wasn't too good, but it was beautiful man." get totally tackled and choked down by the man. There's been a sea change of attitude. Still, we've got to stand up any way we can, so yes on Prop 19 in CA.
While I don't anticipate breaking any laws at BM, and I'm certainly not going to commit any kind of crime against anybody, I am interested to see the level of toleration that goes on there.

I looked at his 11 posts...don't see anything that bad. He did ask a question that I've wondered about in years past. It seems like the LEO's pick a new enforcement target every year.theCryptofishist wrote:He's been on the board ~ 48 hours and he's already opening this can of worms.

and just think, in just about two short weeks you get to find out. Your actions will decide the level of tolerance you see, quite honestly. Personally I see tons of toleration & have yet to have a bad interaction with a LEO- and that's since 2003. I also know people who've had run-in's within their first 2 days on the playa. All depends on the person.
Two weeks. All will be answered, Grasshopper.

I'm sure it'll all be fine. By virtue of us talking on a chat site, we get chat site conversation. All seriousness aside, my question on this thread just might be relevant on this board next year. Just remember that I was the first to consider it. And yes, it's been only 48 hours. I have neglected my usual Baja travel site to play here.

And let's not forget that in terms of actual arrests the numbers are so small as to make all stats meaningless.
So, Token, what do you think is the ratio of cop posts on the board to arrests?
7 to 1?

My apologies, I was obviously mistaken in my assessment. The question might be relevant in a year? Yeah, so which agency are you doing advance scouting for again?Packoderm wrote:I'm sure it'll all be fine. By virtue of us talking on a chat site, we get chat site conversation. I couldn't care less. I just found the question and conversation silly and pointless. I love special posts.theCryptofishist wrote:And let's not forget that in terms of actual arrests the numbers are so small as to make all stats meaningless.

I've never seen any specific reference to the burn, but haven't looked.
I think those are more political questions than police.
Check another forum for that.
But other questions you might have about the way they think are probably answered there.
Mostly, they are just like other forums.
Sometimes I have to go to the homepage to see what kind of forum I'm on.

IMHO
I've got quite a bit of experience with cops in the past, and unless they're so different down in the states I can assure you one thing:
They're folks who volunteered for this gig, who are interested in seeing what goes on, and are sworn to uphold and maintain the law. They will ticket you for being stupid, but they're unlikely to begin turning over rocks unless they're given no particular choice.
Burning Man is a huge regional event. Everywhere between Reno and Gerlach makes a ton of money off of burners coming through and stocking up for the Playa, Law Enforcement aren't in the business of making this event over policed and unfun strictly because it would drive our business away.
Don't be stupid, and you'll be fine.

In regards to mj, getting caught with less than an ounce (first time offense) of mj in nevada usually just results in a $600 fine. getting caught on federal land by a federal agent with a bug up his ass may result in something stiffer. We also have legalized medical mj, but of course that does not apply on federal lands and 87% of nevada sits on federal land...just keep it on the dl

Maybe it's just me, but I always sort of thought peeing on the playa was a rite of passage. I remember last year (and every other year for that matter), on burn night, looking down at the playa from the raised platform of our art truck and thinking to myself that the playa reminded me of a giant dalmation with all of the spots. If they want to seriously cut down on "that problem" (which I do not think is a problem in the least) have more accessable JOTS where the people congregate. This isn't rocket science.

So Morel of the Story kiddes; Don't Burn DMT, Don't Let your Campmates Burn It and Go the opisite Direction When you Smell it cause There Will Be DougnutHeads!
Oh and DMT Really is not a Drug intendid for Party use. It is intended for Spiritual enlightenment for small bands of rainforest dwellers too unfortunate to be able to recive TelaEvangilest Programs.
