Ygmir, T.A.Z wtf?! I'm surprised you've not been turned onto this yet? (among several hot topics in this intro I won't get into) TAZ is an enormous, huge. looooong...very interesting read. An interesting lesson, way of life...you'll burn an entire tree or three in your fireplace reading TAZ...it's gooood, you will like it.

FWIT, I have a debt to at least two German burners. One is in Bavaria, I'm not sure about the other. Karine knows them better than I do.

In one way I regret starting this thread drift towards nationalities and politics. On the other hand, if we cannot talk about it....
A couple of years ago I gave a talk to the Sons Of Norway club in Sacramento. After the segment about The Occupation, I pointed out that I had not once used the words German or Germany -- I had used only the words Nazi and Nazis. After a moment of thought, everybody in the room were nodding their heads -- the difference is vital.
My father fought in the Norwegian Underground Resistance. A few decades later he bought a German car. So I guess I learned that vital difference from him.
I too feel guilty about stealing North America from the Native population. But have you noticed they are taking their country back, one quarter at the time -- on a battlefield called Casinos?

I moved to the USA when I was a wee child. I can understand how some people, may hold a grudge against Germans. But, If I'm not mistaken, there are a lot of German families in this country; and was even a nazi party before the war. Its history, as far as I'm concerned. And, I'm not here for history lessons. Arrgh. Not all tribes have casinos. Not all tribes get revenue from casinos. There are places of "third world" conditions in this country--in the contintental U.S., and not all of it is in the battered inner cities. There are horrors on the reservations, and huge indifference to them everywhere else. (The Pacific Islands are also public health nightmares--on Saipan as recently as 10 years ago there were regular notices to boil tap water as it was contaminated with bacteria.)Elliot wrote:I too feel guilty about stealing North America from the Native population. I think casinos are a lousy way for the tribes to be making money. It's a tax on a certain, very human, kind of stupidity, and all too often paid by people who are close to the edge. And the Indians get caught in the whole thing, too, losing what little money an individual has.
65 years after WWII the Germans are unified and prosperous. Nearly 150 years after the battle of Little Bighorn, Indians are still poor and sick and descriminated against.

Thank you Elliot! I LOVE that car! Jeff told me how expensive the tickets are, along with travel, supplies and all the goodies. And I was a little apprehensive at first, but It looks like loads of fun. I can't wait! Its soo damned cold now, and all I want is a little warmth and relaxation.

The Temple is always a place to say farewell to lost loved ones. People write notes on the temple itself, and attach photos. Somebody left a wedding dress once. When the Temple is burned, with all these messages and mementos, there is no random noise from the crowd, no music from the Mutant Vehicles -- it is a solemn occasion.
Burning Man is much more than just a drunken dance party.

Chapter 2 – 2007, the KSR year
Having spent the 2006 burn learning my way around, I did what I often do – jumped in with both feet without thinking a whole lot about it first. And it turned wondermuss!
I mentioned that some of my burner friends are also active in Kinetic Sculpture Racing, and I could easily think of many other racers who would probably enjoy Burning Man if invited and guided. So I invited some of the top racers in the sport and organized a KSR Theme Camp.
An official Theme Camp basically means a reserved space with a listing in the directory. I did the paperwork and we were approved and given a corner at 4:30 and C.
We had around 25 people and nine Racing Sculptures, plus a number of non-racing but interesting pedal vehicles including several of Peter’s various Whymcycles.
Peter and I also had a new bus – the old one having puked its engine in the meantime. This bus is newer and better and still going strong today.

In addition to showing off our beloved sport of KSR, we performed bicycle repair. This was a natural, since many of the KSR builders are skilled bicycle mechanics. Also, the bicycle repair service brought in a “captive audienceâ€

Chapter 3 – 2008-2009-2010
Let’s skip quickly thru a couple of years so we can wrap this up today.
The Big Deal in our camp in 2008 was a boy named Sam. Included in the bargain was his mother Jerri, who is my buddy Peter’s wife. This was Jerri’s first burn, and certainly Sam’s – Sam was eight months old!
We joined Camp Inspiratum, which is about all kinds of inspiration and inspiring thought and so forth. The camp chieftain is Captain Chuck – one of the first Kinetic Sculpture Racers I ever met. So Camp Inspiratum is full of KSR machinery and other human-powered toys.
Peter rigged up one of his pedal cars with a big awning for shade, and a baby seat, and off the little family went. Sure, Jerri and Sam spent a lot of time in the bus, specially when the wind and dust was up, but they sure got around also. Like many of us in our first year, Jerri seemed slightly overwhelmed by everything.
By now I had converted the Chopper into a tricycle;
This works better in Kinetic Races, but wasn’t as much fun in BRC. It was impossible to tip it over!
Camp Inspiratum is fairly far south in town, away from the concentrated techno at the north end, so it was wonderfully quiet.
A group of Norwegians who call themselves Camp Herring come over every other year. They have a running gag about (supposedly) prohibiting nudity in their camp. I helped them install the signs:

In 2009 our little group wanted to try something new – camping by ourselves. But we wanted to be close to several camps of friends, which is how we wound up fairly far north-and-noisy. But Sam slept just fine – now 20 months old.
The larger change was in Jerri. With her first, overwhelming, burn behind her, she really embraced this one. She kept studying the event directory and darting off to Yoga lessons and body-painting sessions and whatnot.
This year I used a four-seat tricycle that was a bastard evolution of the red car of 2006:
We had a pretty fair amount of fun with it:
Peter and I hung out our Bike Repair shingle and did a bit of bike repair and trading, but nothing like when we were “on the mapâ€
