Post by moonstonerick » Wed Jan 12, 2011 6:55 am

So why do burners seem to love bacon so much ? and why the harsh attitude towards hippies? just curious that's all.

Generally, one defines oneself as a "burner" because they live by "The 10." Self-reliance. Volunteering.

Hippies live for the next bowl to smoke, Jah love, mooching and other useless bullshit.

Bacon is simply delicious and goes with everything.

Well, shit. I was going to offer a pictorial narrative, but every damn site is blocked.

Hippie

People who hate hippies

Hippies are identified at Burning Man because they are in the middle of the playa with no water, burnt skin, bare feet and they want some of what you're eating.

Hippie camps want you to haul their trash out for them. (based on actual experience)

Hippie approaches camp. "Can I gift this [beer can] to your trash?"

She wasn't even trying to be funny and got really snotty when we said no.

Hippie approaches camp, where we are grilling steaks. "Dude, those look amazing. Can I have one?" Not only asks like that, but then stomps off in a huff when we say no.

Bacon is delicious. And relatively salty which aids in water retention.

Hippies are generally lazy which does not really jive with the hard work in preparing for and experiencing something like Burning Man. I assume so at least since I am going on my maiden voyage to the desert this year.

lol ...... wow I never thought of hippies the way you describe them here . I thought it was all peace ,love and daisies . I can see why they're fround upon. Come to think of it I actually know a few people who are hippies , I just didn't know it, and yes they are lazy fucks who just want the world to take care of them.

I can understand the love of bacon ( being from canada)....it is very yummy. Nothing like canadian back bacon on a fresh kaiser with lots of ketchup........... mmmmm.

"Can I gift this to your trash?" haven't heard that one. Erroneous Gift code: "I gift to you" = Take this token that cost me nothing. "you gift to me" = give me something I need that came from your hard earned bucks, which I have chosen never to obtain on my own.

on a case by case basis, not all these transactions are valueless... but the Hippie in our story will always offer something of no value, and expect something in return of some value, thinking there's a "rule" about "gifts" at Burning Man encouraging this.

I had a very, very, very hard time my first year, watching all the dumb fucks do stupid shit. Lying out in 40 degree weather in a bikini, no shoes, no water or food in sight, clearly on drugs. Over. and Over.

One fellow came up to me at night out in the desert (as opposed to in the streets), jeans and t-shirt. Barefoot. Nothing else on him. Looking for his friends/camp. Had no idea where it was, or what it was near. I suggested he go to center camp, a Ranger post, etc. He followed me around for several minutes before I finally lost him.

It upset me, pissed me off, etc. ("I can't help it, it's the Ranger in me!") to repeatedly see things like that all week. I'm better now. But, if you're expecting all the awesome, self-reliant people you interact with around here (mostly)...it ain't quite like that.

That sort of thing isn't unusual or uncommon, especially as you get closer to the weekend.

I don't think burners have a view that is any harsher towards hippies than the general public does. Most people don't like hippies. But I think this is because bums often get mistaken hippies. If someone stands around all day and asks for handouts that person is not a hippie, that person is a bum. Bare feet and dreadlocks be damned.

Personally, I find ravers on the playa so much easier to loathe.

Here we go again. The author of THEY'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE! has been doing it for years, is a Hollywood scriptwriter, and is an unabashed member of the political left. This, people, is satire! I wish I hadn't deleted his write up about Burning Man some four years ago. Hysterical.

It may be satire, but it's really not funny.

This is funny satire (and people still read it as the truth).

YMMV

I turned 13 in 1968, I remember the hippies...I thought they were silly people where men had long hair and women liked to sing while hitting on a tamborine with flowers and beads and cool clothes (these folks looked clean) As I got older, the hippies got creepier and smelly and would beg while trying to touch me in a very creepy caress. It turns my stomach just thinking about it.

But in the same breath I knew hippy-type people who were clean and giving and peaceful. They had their small clean "pads" and work just enought to pay rent buy food, and pay utilities. They were minimalists. They had long hair and it was clean. Pretty cool people.

And as far as bacon is concerned, it is delicious, salty cured slices of porky goodness. I love late night bacon too. One of my favorite sammie is a bacon and avocado on toast sammie with lettuce and mayo!
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Can we please separate "long hair" from "hippie"? The Hubby has hair to the middle of his back and he is definitely not a hippie. When I had hair, it was to the middle of my back- also not a hippie. Adrian (the Mighty Leader of the BRC Weekly and co-founder of Bootie) had dreads almost to his ass- very much not a hippie. I could go on.

Dirty, however, is certainly a proper descriptive for a hippie in the modern context, as is laziness and begging.
