I'm sure you can muster up a little credit for his posting of the missive. He can still be your hero.

[quote="delle"]Truthfully? I’d have to say that I give about as much thanks to the hippie culture as I do to the suffragettes for having helped to mold the world I was allowed to grow up in.
Like it or not, no other movement (for lack of a better term) did more to break the stifling social and moral bonds of the Victorian era.
In fact, It strikes me as strange that the prevailing attitude in here is so anti-hippie. And you do what? Yearly get together to form a commune of free give-and-take based on brotherly love, where a hug and a smile are touted by all to have more value than gold?
I find that rather amusing, personally.
It’s like you’ve decided to take all the “good stuffâ€

But where did the Cacophany Society spring from? Arguably, no Hippies, no Cacophany Society (at least not in San Fransisco at that time), no Burning Man...so there is at least a tangential credit due to Hippies (IMO)

Perhaps, but society members Ive known....and I "may be one already!"...I wouldnt describe as hippies.
the only credit Ill give the hippies, is being partially responsible for Punk.

google it, in one article they change between hippy and hippie indescrminately I mean if you can't get your own group name consistent how are we meant to stereotype them?
It's "hippie." "Hippy" is an adjective pertaining to women who seem especially meant for mutant, big-headed ape incubation.

I, too, like defining subgroups of people with undesirable traits then boldly claiming to hate them.
Snark aside, I tend to respect people who abide by the behavior they desire in others and tend to dislike people who demand behavior in others they do not embrace in their own lives.
I couldn't tell what I think a "hippie" is without preconceiving whether I want to support or despise their existence. I like the parts that challenge society's underlying assumptions except when those things go too far. Here's some examples:I guess I mean there's a way to challenge assumptions, but some assumptions come from valid reason.
- Question ownership: if you buy something but never actually touch it (i.e. land you've never seen), do you really own it? Taking it too far: because you have a TV, I should get to have one too.
- Question morality: what's wrong with nudity? Taking it too far: why can't I rape you?
- Question garbage: if you dispose of something, I can take it and use it for free (i.e. broken vacuum cleaner, dumpster diving). Taking it too far: you're eating a sandwich and get up to use the bathroom, so I get to eat your sandwich.
- Question freedoms: I should be able to walk all over the country without proof of identification. Taking it too far: my right to free expression includes banging garbage cans by your bedroom window all day for weeks at a time.
I like this. A lot. It really gets to some of the stuff that creeps me out about their culture.
Thank you.

As I've said before, I believe that one source of the anti-hippie bias in Burning Man circles comes from the fact that we are, in many respects, especially on the playa, an open and generous community. In order to maintain that without being sucked dry, we have to be very careful not to encourage free-loaders.

I know I'm going to regret this.. that I should leave it be, but I can't.
Because frankly, this still saddens me.
I could tell the same negative stories told above – replacing the word "hippie" with the words “self-important rich assholesâ€

I'm on both sides of the issue here- I've done my fair share of hanging out with modern hippies (of the Radical Faerie variety), and a friend of mine lives in Wavy Gravy's commune in Berkeley & works for Camp Winnarainbow; hell, back in the 80's I had hair down to my butt, wore Guatemalan pants & Ganesha pendants while getting arrested while working with Greenpeace- I was a hippie as far as most passerby's were concerned.
Some really good things continue to come from the general hippie idealism.
The downside is that the negatives that have shadowed "hippie" since at least '67 continues to be one of the main ways the they're seen by the wider public- freeloaders, dirty, drug-addled, basically useless members of society (much like Burners are seen as drug-fueled pyromaniac Satanic Ravers by "middle America").
"Hippie" has become an easy way to say "lazy, worthless freeloader", for better or worse. Maybe it's time to just call that type "scunges" or something and leave the hippies out of it.
Did someone slip me one of those "nice" pills that Simon took??

You puked in Delle's trees?

I puked in some gutter somewhere last Burn's Night, and couldn't even tell you where it was.

Actually, Delle, I know just what you mean, and that sort of selfish self-absorption always seems worse when it comes from supposedly educated people. But useless freeloaders can be found in all economic brackets.

I personally try to earn my oxygen every day. I tend to believe that everyone should, and to despise people who don't, but

I dont know what hippies of old were really like, but they got something done. Modern hippies...even those from the 80's....IMHO...are like the RCP. They talk alot of shit, but expect you to do all the work....and like the RCP, are nowhere to be found once the cops arrive.
