Anyone in the Bay Area remember the people's park riots? The hippies were pissed that UC wanted to build a volleyball court. We (punks and anarchists) showed up, just for the fun. Once the Blue Meanies formed a line, you could look down ours..and not find a single hippie.
My ex In-Laws were old school hippies, and actually did shit other than running. But, were not in the 60's...

RCP= Revolutionary Communist Party....dont know if they still exist...
There's a communist book store in Berkeley. I don't know what flavor of communism they endorse, and I doubt that they have a copy of hte Stalin bio I'm working my way through. But then, for close to 150 years, the communist party has been splitting and producing offspring faster than the average amoeba.
They didn't carry anarchist books when I checked a couple of decades ago... Anyone know if Bound Together is still open?

Actually, since the Blue Meanies were mentioned...
When my mother first saw the Yellow Submarine she related the storyline to the original People Park confrontations with the chief Blue Meanie as Reagan, and Max as Ed Meese. (He even had the "M" on his chest...)

Me, well back then I liked the glove. Later, I came to appreciate the fish sequences. And then, as a member of the Booby Bar, I do have to recognize that film as the origin of Jeremy Hilary Boob...

"Hippie" has become an easy way to say "lazy, worthless freeloader", for better or worse. Maybe it's time to just call that type "scunges" or something and leave the hippies out of it.
Did someone slip me one of those "nice" pills that Simon took??
they are? i always thought burners where modern hippys with Radical Self-Reliance and DeCommercialisation
but i can live with Drug-fuelled Pyromaniac Satanic Ravers - as long as satan can be interrepted as cernunnos or pan as basically its true.
well i dont worship as such more sort of chat with i'm more an animalistic shamanic school but its my religion you can't have it go find your own

The best things about hippie culture IMO, in no particular order, are:
1. The Drugs
2. Hippie Chicks (and pseudo hippie chicks, as previously noted by Simon - yum!)
3. Tie dye!
4. The Music (Grateful Dead, Phish, Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane, etc., etc.)

...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...

There seems to be different levels of hippydom. The hippies of the 60' seem to be mostly about sex drugs and peace. As they grew older some of them grew out of it while others took it a step further and took their beliefs towards improving the planet creating alternative fuels, power, etc.
A younger new generation seem to divide into two catagories. Hippies and Rainbow Kids. The hippies seemed to enjoy the free spirit of thought and peace but still knew they needed to get an education and contribute to society. The Rainbow Kids that travelled through Sedona when I lived there where the beggers that seemed to always have a dog on a rope and they never showered. They woule camp out in the forest or sleep on the streets begging for money or thay all made the same knotted necklaces for sale.
I would say I'm probably a modern day hippie in that I practice a peaceful existance, I'm aware of my impact on the enviornment and try to improve it, I make african drums, I lived in a bus, 420 friendly and I do dig hippie chicks with dreads. All at the same time I earn a good living, am a responsible father, love new and old music alike, love to party and I take a freaking shower every damn day.
So I would say squash the Rainbows! Those stinky sweaty freaks! Get a job!

Burners hating Hippies is like Jews hating Jews, or Black hating Blacks...
Ask a non-Burner what they think of Burning Man, and they'll say "A bunch of hippies on acid in the desert!"
P.S. Thanks for a supremely entertain thread...

What I like about hippies in general:
-The music
-Their alternative to being so uptight.
-Their pacifist political stance instead of war, war, war.
-Their willingness to experiment.
-Their alternative to hate.
-The way they dress.
-The long hair.
-The two finger peace sign salute.
-Their excellent festivals.
-VW buses.
-Psychedelia.
-Their gentle nature.
-I can overlook the things I don't like so much unless they throw it in my face (hasn't happened yet).
