I've had that discussion, many times, and am not sure where I fall there.
I see both sides, both with merit, IMHO.
I really don't have a firm opinion, but, I do lean towards DUI being illegal.
I mostly, though, would favor "no tolerance" related to personal or property damage resulting from DUI.
Super severe penalties for such.

Ignoring ulterior motives, Reid's argument isn't much different from the org's ban on teeshirt booths. It's not that the org objects to teeshirts per se -- they distribute hundreds every year, allegedly for services rendered -- they just think teeshirt *booths* would make Burning Man look more like a rave concert, car show or something they find equally icky. No way is Burning Man a rave concert. Or car show.
Alas, nobody seems worried about looking like a whore for wearing an org teeshirt. Or the stick figure logo. I've got all mine in their original boxen, waiting for eBay bids to peak.

I'm on the side of open containers being just fine. But, as you said, strict penalties if you do get in an accident that hurts or kills someone or damages property.ygmir wrote:that, is a very good question.jkisha wrote:Do you thing it should be illegal to drive drunk if.nobody gets hurt? I'm also against seat belt laws. I think if a person doesn't want to wear a seatbelt they shouldn't have to. But if they get in an accident and are hurt, they either have to pay for their own medical care or agree to just not get treated and die if they can't afford it.
Now if we had true state sponsored health care for everyone, then I would be ok with the seat belt requirement.

Secondary crashes are often caused by loss of control, due to not wearing a belt, so others are at risk without one.
In many areas, secondary crashes are the leading cause of fatalities.
I was discussing the crash a neighbor had with a street racer on the scene.
He didn't see most of it, but said stupidity was involved.
There were at least three crashes before the final one.

OK, then my answer is yes, ANYONE involved in ANY accident regardless of fault, that have decided to drive and not wear a seat belt, would NOT be eligible for free medical care. If you are taking the risk of driving without a belt, you are also taking the responsibility of being able to pay for your own medical treatment. (That is, of course, if there were public health care for all, though I don't see a problem with this being the rule even with the private health care system we have now. Just like automobile insurance, maybe I'd even suggest health insurance for accident related injuries be required too. Hmmmm....basically, isn't that what Obama is requiring in his Affordable Health Care Act? Good idea, if I do say so myself.gyre wrote:Secondary crashes are often caused by loss of control, due to not wearing a belt, so others are at risk without one.

Reid's stance against brothels is just lip service. Nobody in Vegas seems to care about the issue and most find Reid an annoying idiot but weren't comfortable with his opponent either. We basically had a choice between two bowls of shit, so we stuck with the smell we were familiar with.
They already don't enforce the laws against brothels in Vegas, let alone where it is legal. I stumbled upon some secrets by accident while in Vegas and I think it is more fitting never to reveal them (what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas) except to say that you can find anything you want there if you know where to look. Hang around long enough and you will eventually become aware of these once the people get to know you and realize that you're OK. They have a highly sophisticated security system that makes the Secret Service look lame by comparison.

The main issue Reid is saying is that legalized prostitution is supposedly
keeping business's from coming here.
Doubtful!
It's not just the working girls that will be put out of work: there's bartenders,
office staff, maids, security, hell even doctors could be affected. The girls are
given health checks monthly. No pun intended.

That's BS, right now its one of the few things still bringing in business. The economy is the main deterrent at this time as my friends who work on the strip tell me they seem to be bypassing the casinos more in favor of the strip clubs... There is one story that made the local news there in early 2008 that should not have stayed in Vegas. Over 40,000 people were exposed to Hep C and various other diseases because Desert Springs hospital (on Flamingo) and 5 others decided to reuse needles to save money. It was the major scandal that was going on at about the time of the Monty Carlo fire. I told some friends about it living 3000 miles away to watch for it on the news and it never made the national news as far as I know. Seems to me something like this should have been front page in the NY Times, etc, etc. If anyone here can tell me otherwise, please do. I've been wondering how they silenced this for some time:

Quoted from the Nevada Appeal:
Reid concluded that portion of his address by telling lawmakers: “If we want to attract business to Nevada that puts people back to work, the time has come for us to outlaw prostitution.â€

First, it wasn't reuse of needles, they actually printed a correction at the bottom of the article. And "possibly at risk" does not equal "were exposed to". Additionally, the article you cited had some other problems regarding the reuse of the single use vials that didnt make sense to me.LLQchasm wrote:How so? I didn't read the article but posted it there for those who didn't know. I was in Vegas at the time this happened and there was a lot of talk about this when it went down. My impression comes from having talked to those who were worried that they might be infected. So I guess the reason it wasn't carried nationally is because the local hype didn't pan out to be as serious as initially stated. A couple doctors lost their ability to practice medicine and several others were fined, jailed, etc... Thanks for clearing up the mystery.
These atories are rarely carried, though I have heard of this.
The dental industry continues the type of hype common to the nuclear industry, in spite of convictions of dentists for spreading aids, etc.
Dentists may be higher risk than other medical areas, when not using proper sterilization.
Always ask.
The dentists doing it right are happy to talk about it.
It is expensive to do properly.

The VA had an incident awhile back that coincidentally had to do with colonoscopies...but in this case I believe the issue involved not cleaning the endoscopes properly between procedures.LLQchasm wrote:I didn't read the article but posted it there for those who didn't know. Mothers went on a tirade not long ago about how vaccinations were responsible for their babies becoming autistic. Not only was this proven false, but it has allowed the reemergence of diseases we haven't seen in this country in years. Uninformed people tend to exaggerate anything they believe impacts their health negatively, right or wrong.
The over use of vitamins is something else that comes to mind too.

I think proven false is too strong a statement.
Not proven is more accurate.
Autism is particularly difficult to track and may have multiple causes.
There is a link to poison in some cases, and genetic damage may actually get worse with a second generation.
Not getting vaccinations is a problem, but understandable as manufacturers keep getting caught using improper procedures.
It seems to happen even without any reason though, at this point.
It's true that mercury is not needed in vaccinations, and may be a risk factor for many things.
Vitamin overuse occurs, but they continue to change the guidelines, especially with vitamin D, now considered set far too low.
It affects so many things, I just stopped reading about it.
Most people are believed to be under using it.
New guidelines are 1000 daily and may be 2000 soon.
It is crucial enough to be worth being tested for.

Your thinking on vaccination is wrong. If anything I understated the case.
And for the most part vitamin supplements are an out and out waste of money, ranking right up there with colon cleansing.

How?
One of the mainstream manufacturers recently had to dump warehouses of material after being caught not using the most basic precautions.
I think it had something to do with the flu vaccine shortage that year as well.
As for mercury, every chemist I talk to feels the risks are far too understated.
Regardless of a link to autism, mercury is considered to have a safe exposure limit of 0 ppm, like benzene etc.
The discussion about dental use is ongoing.
It has to be looked at a little suspiciously that they continue to defend mercury exposure, when it appears unnecessary for production.
And I suppose you've seen the docko about vaccine manufacture using apes in africa, and the theoretical tie to the aids crossover into humans?
It is only slightly reassuring that such use was a known hazard even then, and prohibited, yet once done...
Perhaps more disturbing is the way it was done at the time, amounting to forced experimentation on the population, before it was introduced to the rest of the world.
