Tip/Something I will Not Do This Year

Post by Irreverent Moniker » Thu May 26, 2011 2:34 pm

Last year was the first time I'd ever bought fabric. I went into the store and saw these giant rolls with prices like $10-15. I thought to myself, "jeez, I never knew fabric was so cheap! There's so much here, I could make like a year's worth of clothes!"

So I loaded up my cart with like 5 rolls and went on shopping through the store. I didn't quite understand the strange looks until I went to check out and learned that the price was per yard...so what I thought was $10 was really $150-250. I think I had over a grand of fabric when I hit the checkout.

So first-timers, if you've never bought fabric before...don't be an idiot like me.

Forget to fill up my water jugs...yes, really.

Sixth year going and I FORGOT.

Had to spend $25 on bottled water at the Empire store when I had perfectly good reuseable jugs in my car.

LAME.

Oh wow, that IS bad. How'd you manage that?

The worst thing I forgot was an air bed, which I grabbed in Reno en route.

Next year I won't bring as much clothes. I didn't wear half of them, what I needed more of? Underwear. I sweated enough that I really needed more than the two a day I had brought.

Anyone on her who saw at the burn can testify, I ran around in my underwear or less most of the event. But it depends on your needs and want.

When you think you have enough socks, double it.
That was hammered into my head as a playa virgin. I still would have liked to bring more than I did. So this year, I'm doubling what I brought last time.

Just two sock changes a day isn't enough. Dust gets in with your sweaty feet and turns into playa gunk when it gets moist. Not pleasant.

I changed my undies twice a day when I could, so didn't have to worry about playa-dingle-berries and the like. But apparently it happens?
God Please, don't make me make myself look like a moron...

Left my ratchet set out the night of the burn. We packed up everything before the man burned except the 10x20, the bag it goes in, and the ratchet set that has the tools to take it down...... and the tequila.

Woke up went out side to tear down the canopy, pack it up and leave. Went to get the ratchet set.... couldn't find it!
Figure it got ripped off before we woke up.
But it was just sitting on the ground in the canopy, kinda my fault for leaving it out.- wont do that again!

Crazy, I was right next to you and had all of my crap unlocked/tools out etc

Someone did come fuck with the lights we had set up, and I couldn't get them working again. I don't think we had anything stolen though

That is probably one of the biggest things I learned my first year. Costuming is my "thing" and I'd packed a fairly usual assortment (like I take to regionals). And then wore the same thing around camp every day, and was too tired/didn't have time to bother with anything else.

This year I anticipate bringing even less, after lugging a 82 lb suitcase through airports...

This year I won't stay up all night (if I can help it). It was pretty amazing to finally see a BRC sunrise, but it ruined me for the rest of the day - I've become more of a day burner, in my old age.

We never wear everything we bring, but since we have a trailer, the extra clothing doesn't hurt. I like having options.

We had some of our velvet ropes taken, so everything gets tied up on Burn Night.

Decoy booze bottles sound like a good idea. Have enough watered down booze in them to make them drinkable, but loaded 'em up with Benefiber. Just make sure campmates know what not to drink unless they need to be moved to tears.

I have the space for regionals, so that's pretty much me. I love having options. I changed outfits five times, one day! I hadn't realized until somebody pointed it out. Ha!

I will not stay up until 3am the day before we are supposed to leave at 9am, and will not let my boyfriend talk me into "a couple little stops in town" that put us so far behind we don't leave town until 3pm. We could have been at the burn the same night, but as tired as I was and night-blind, we had to stay the night in Winnemucca :( (he doesn't drive)

I also will not forget to bring some kind of warm pants and a raincoat (and will not forget that I did pack my pleather pants that were buried in my costume bag...idiot) - last year's cold and rain at early entry caught me by complete surprise, I had one pair of muddy jeans and a soggy playa coat for 2 days. :?

Cutting back on the clothing is something I try to do and often fail at, I cut way back last year (hence no pants!) and it was somewhat easier to organize what I had, even though I didn't wear half of it. One year I brought so many clothes I forgot what I had, or couldn't find what I wanted, cuz most of it was buried in the bottom of a bin.

I will not decide to pack up at noon, get to Reno at 4pm and then think I can drive down to LA no problem without stopping someplace along the way to sleep.

I will not eat them in a hippy van
I will not eat them in the playa sand
I will not eat them at Burningman.
