Theme camp registration, charge tax or not?
Theme camp registration, charge tax or not?
We're using paypal for our camp registration fees. How do you avoid paying tax fees upon camper registration? Would you let the campers know there will be tax fees charged to them? Or are most other theme camps nonprofits? Thanks!

Still not very clear. Are you referring to Paypal fees or sales taxes? People that use Paypal are aware of their fees. If you aren't paying sales tax, just don't charge any tax amount. You're collecting camp fees, its not like you're selling something that might require charging sales tax.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Paypal fees. It adds a significant amount to the camp fees to have the paypal fees be added on top of it. So how do other camps avoid making campers pay extra if they're using paypal? Or do other theme camps have a different way of collecting camp registration fees that don't create an extra charge?

can see your a little confused here. all the camps are independent of each other. Your ticket just gets you in the gate, noting else. So depending on the camp your looking at depends on how things are done. For example with us we are asking for a 5 gallon keg of home brew. For others they might ask you to kick in money for alcohol. And the list goes on and on.
Contact the camp you are thinking about.

Serious response. We just have everybody send us personal checks. For those coming in from overseas, cash on the playa is fine. No early arrival passes for anyone delequent on their dues. Only had one guy screw us in the past (his moniker on the ePlaya is Wildfire and he's from Florida). I hope this helps.
Thanks Dr. Pyro, that was an answer along the lines I was looking for. This question was not about purchasing Burning Man tickets, but trying to find the best method of paying for camp fees if it's for a larger theme camp. Paypal is one method, but then how do you avoid the paypal fees? Does any other theme camp use paypal, and if so, how do they deal with the extra charge?

Please don't think Burning Man is the same as an internet forum. You're experiencing freedom of speech, and you have every right to ignore whichever user you desire. Scroll over the smiley faces under their avatar and click on the ignore one. Then you won't have to see their responses.
Eplaya or not, it is still the internet. As moderator, I do request helpful answers before snark, but it isn't all that enforceable.

I don't get to disable accounts, and we do have a lot of leeway here.huggima wrote:Thanks Anti M for the tip on how to ignore others. I certainly will be doing just that. I have moderated forums on the past, and if people were flaming, I gave them warnings, and if they continued, I disabled their account. Freedom of speech is one thing, being just plain stupid is another.
Getting tossed takes a lot of work here.

Those fees would be a part of the camp expenses, and should be figured into the dues amount. But frankly, if you figured your expenses and fees to cover them so precisely that the extra few percent in fees makes a difference, your going to end up in the whole either way. There are always unexpected expenses that should be figured into camp fees. IMHO

This is more of a major theme camp thing, such as with Conexus, Hookahdome, Red Lightning, Entheon Village. The gift option was what we were thinking of, except that Paypal may freeze our account if 100 people are gifting us without us paying Paypal for fees. Some camps at Burning Man had their account frozen because they were collecting fees without being a nonprofit. And if we were charged a fee for all the 100 people who paid (and our fees are running from as low as $95 to as high as $300) we would be eventually losing money, if we had to pay for fees that others weren't paying. So i wonder if we should charge a service fee to campers, or not.
I appreciate all the suggestions.

so far the most useful piece of info i have found on eplaya was to put a little bit of vinegar in the water you wash your feet with to counter-act the alkaline of the playa dust..........on the other end of the spectrum is this thread.......unless you were fucking around with the question and then it is funny as shit... much more so then saying you are an unknown DJ who is looking for a stage
