If you are on the Oregon coast we may be able to come and get the items, we have a builder from Portland!
Actually, I'm closer than the coast. I could meet your co-conspirators at Tanasbourne or something. Better know how to drive a pair of chopsticks. There's a full-auto mecha-robo sushi joint down the road.

If I am the OR. builder in question (suddenly suspicious of a ninja pier group member stalking around the greater PDX area and NOT having pints with me)
And I can in fact drive chopsticks

Hi Ehcsy!
Yay! I gathered up all the goodies. Not as much as I thought but it's really neat.
And another Yay! My transmission is fixed and 100 miles of offroad testing confirms it's a WIN!
Let me know when you are available. I'm totally job free so almost anytime is grand.
Look look look!
The empty can of delicious and refreshing Nestea (tm) is for scale...

Hippie Fishing
Maybe a visit to St. Vincent De Paul to pick up some old poles and creels for some afternoon Hippie Fishing? Bait? blinky things? Baggies of oregano (called weed on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley)? Dead Head shirts? Catch and Release? Maybe an 8 track of American Beauty would work?

Glass floats.
I know, nobody's going to give me glass floats. But they are lovely. I have some that I think are fake, but that's better than nothing.
You think that after the Glass and Cowbell Tour of Europe I'd have learned...

10ft. At the very end. Clearance should be about 9ft 2in at the end.
We have been working all week to make the 4x6's look another 100 years older. Properly fucking exausted.
Anyone know of a good staining option that will grey the wood but keep the contrast (whitewash isn't working, neither is a baking soad water mix).

I have used hydrochloric acid with great success. You can get it at a pool or hdwe store.
I'd advise wire brushing (on a drill or better yet on an angle grinder) with the grain so you have ridges that stand up.
Then spray it with acid with a graden sprayer or such.
Let it set for a while and rinse with a hose nozzle.
Test it out on some scrap pieces first to make sure it'll work on your particular flavor of wood.
You might have to neutralize with baking soda, test that too. The wood might have a sharp smell from the residual acid but I think you can just leave it out in the sun and rain and it will go away.
I've also heard of using either lime or quicklime. I've never done it with them though.
Umm, I think we deserve some pictures. We've been patient thus far but the peanut gallery is plotting revolution...

not The Pier but a pier
Sorry guys but I got a good pier pic in my mom's backyard this past weekend and wanted to show you.
That lower level on the side is called a "Lady Pier" where I come from, very popular with young men for some reason.

yeah those are my kids

Bird shit seems to work. Try scattering seed on it, and see what you get back...fbcota wrote: Anyone know of a good staining option that will grey the wood but keep the contrast (whitewash isn't working, neither is a baking soad water mix).

Or a wash of gray paint & water, about 50-50. You can get recycled gray paint in 5-gallon buckets at some waste facilities. I think the one at the dump in SF near Candlestick is open Thur-Sat, there's a container shed on your left as you drive in to the scales. Streak it with black & white to simulate tar and bird poo.

Thanks Bob. We tried a really diluted white wash but we lost too much contrast.
I think we are going to try a grey stain. We have a friend with an excess of used stain, so hopefully that will work.

Heyyy...
I got some more rope for the peir. I found about 25 feet wrapped around an old douglas fir stump overgrown with salal. Couldn't ask for better weathered rope, no you couldn't. Indeed.

Not the color we want. Its easy to age wood to a pleasing furniture aged color. A little harder to get sun bleached neglected for 50 years.

Re: The Pier
Start with a gray wash, streak it with black with an old coarse brush for grain, then apply white with a coarse sponge or texture roller around the water line to simulate barnacles.
Once you start with any paint or stain, it's all or nothing.

Thanks Bob. We just started to hit it with a really watered down Grey wash and its looking pretty good. I think we have finally got the look we wanted
. My only complaint is we just don't have the man power to grind the entire length of the 4x6 beams. I am getting sooooooo excited. This Pier is going to be so cool!

Re: The Pier
Belt sanding across the grain w/ coarse grit is faster, or sandblasting. Tough if some of the wood is still green, though.

One question, did either Maxine, LaVerne or Patty make the cut? I'm missing those song birds and it would be sweet to reunite at BM (if only briefly).

I was involved in a complete house rebuild, but i spent most of the time getting beer and keeping the other guys from smoking weed while using power tools.
