Fur fabric scraps

Post by junglesmacks » Wed Jul 27, 2011 4:40 pm

I'm not usually one to ask, but I thought I would try anyway..

We are in need of a 3" x 37" strip of white shag long hair fur fabric to complete the girls night outfit to go around the bottom of the mini skit with EL lighting. We can only find full yards for sale for very expensive plus shipping costs, when all we need is this strip so that it matches the jacket. Joanne's Fabric doesn't carry it here and we've checked all other fabric stores.

If anyone could help, it would be much much much appreciated! I would be glad to PayPal you a little something or trade or..?

If ol' happy face doesn't have the right size scrap, maybe I can help.
Our local store has white, and sells half yards (18 x 60) for $10.
Figure $15 with shipping and you've got enough to finish the clothing and do a bike.

Hmm not bad! The cheapest I've been able to find is at www.distinctivefabrics.com for $25/yard plus like $10 in shipping.. I'm not into paying $35 for just a strip of scrap fabric.. especially when I just choked on $45 in EL wire and driver for her outfit this afternoon..

I decided I couldn't finish the coat before I got the bulk of my gear sent away last week, so I will be working on the coat this week and the next. And wearing it on the train. :D It will be more green than orange, but I will still resemble a flamboyant piece of furniture . . .

Minor progress: I did buy coverable buttons as a fallback option, because it has been impossible to find 10 retro mother-of-pearl or rhinestone 1 1/8" buttons that 1) I don't hate or 2) aren't $4.00/apiece. But I'm still looking.

I prefer my coats to look like flamboyant furniture !
I like covered buttons, that's what I did with mine. Wish I had moms giant button tin she got from her mom though, I swear there would be the perfect one in there, there always was. I should ask my step dad.

In case anyone's still reading...

I just learned Jo-Ann's Fabrics will sell/cut/pro-rate BY THE INCH. And they sell fur. (I just went in the other day and bought only 3 inches for kitty ears.) Sure they're a bit overpriced (~$10-15/yard for fur) but if you ever have a super small project and no time for shopping around, now ya know!

They sell fractions of a yard because they do a big business with quilters. Yes they have fur, but generally only white, black, and natural colors / prints (at least the stores in NY are that way).

If you get on their mailing list they send out 40% off any one item coupons fairly regularly. It applies to the entire piece of cut yardage.

I came across an interesting one at wally mart this weekend - pink faux mink for 6.00 a yard. It was the only faux fur they had in the store though.

Wow this is cool1 I've bought backing foam from them by the inch, but never fabric. That's great.

The one by me does have a pretty good selection of animal print type fur, yeah. The prices actually are pretty good if you compare to like distinctive fabrics, and they ALWAYS have 30-40% off coupons in the newspaper every sunday and I think printable online as well. Look around. They have some really cool lame and glitter and all kinds of fabrics, really..

I'll look for those coupons next time I go in, thanks! And you're right about the prices. I moved outta Los Angeles two months ago, having been spoiled by $5/yard for faux fur some places, $1-3/yard for everything else I could possibly want, and I am very quickly learning HOW spoiled I was! As I was typing out "a bit overpriced" with "$10-15 a yard" and then re-reading the distinctivefabrics prices, I started getting really bummed about leaving for the first time, haha. *remember the traffic, remember the traffic*

Another thing - most online fabric shops sell fur only by the full yard, although I recall seeing one or two that had 1/2 yard minimums.
