Hello there.

I'm Jeremy...this will be my second burn. Last year I over did my art project (which I understand is usually a sympton of second year burners) and tried to build a gigantic 6-ft tall Origami Buddha out of a 20ftx20ft piece of chicken wire.

The finished product did look vaguely like the Buddha it was supposed to, but it wasnt what I hoped for. So this year I embarked on something much simpler...sewing 4 furry suits for myself out of fake fur. I did them all in three days, and now I actually have to get packed!

I will be DJing house and maybe some hardcore at the IGS village at 8:00 and the esplanade. I will be living there. I will be bringing a ton of magic cards for people to play with...drop by Tuesday at 1 to play if youd like.

I'm really exited about this year's event. My mom passed away a few weeks ago, my work life is hectic, and the Republicans are invading New York, so I really need some serious time away from it all. I'm going to do my best to find new people to meet this year, and spend less time wandering around by myself seeing all there is to see, and more time meeting new folks. I also will be enjoying Martinis at the man later in the week, and yes, I would love to find out about some of the, er, swing camps that are out there. I think my furry suits would be a hit.

Can't wait to get back to the desert! The weather looks like it will actually be clear the early part of next week! See you all there!

Well Greg
one of the amazing things about being human is hte ability to make changes, to even have "conversion experiences." In one way, I'm not much of a guide having had on one level the ideal secular humanist childhood, with a Math Professor father and the bulk of my growing up in Berkeley, CA. I never had to break free so much as learn how to deal with the rest of the country. On other levels I've had to struggle as much as anyone else.

Check out your regional contacts (lower down on the index page under regional)--see if they are having a Decompression this year. or any other regional events, support groups whatever. Post something if you can't find a local group, maybe some area e-playans will answer and you can get your feet wet (or int eh context is that dry?) Start making gifts. Keep reading e-playa or other boards. The burn is only the main event--not the only event. Start planning and making contacts.

Crypto - Thanks for the info. This gives me some very positive things to have as goals. I'm sure our paths will eventually cross . . . until then, take care -

My name is Tony and I'm a Dangerholic. This year will be my first BM and I can't wait to hang out with all you fellow freaks.

I like doing things that are inherently dangerous. Like playing with fire and explosions. I try to live by the motto "Safety Third" because being safe is boring .... and for pussies. Life is not a spectator event that you watch on the TV. Wouldn't the world be an interesting place if more people took chances more often.

Safety Third doesn't mean being an idiot and blowing yourself up or otherwise permanently harming yourself. The number 1 rule is self preservation. Know the consequences of your actions and be prepared to deal with them. The number 2 rule is do not negatively affect others. Make sure innocent bystanders do not pay for your lack of preparation/knowledge.

This will be my partner and my first BM but we have been to a few local burns and have a great circle of friends who are long time playa ho's. I'm sure we'll be in good hands.

All this packing and last minute preparation is driving us mad. I can't wait to get to the playa so I can blow off this steam and get down to playing. Maybe that's my other motto "Work hard, play harder!"

Come by the Slow Burn Lounge at Earth & 6:30 and ask around for Tony & Roxy. If we're there I'll happily share a drink with you. We'll have a message board near our RV if you'd like to leave a message. Someone at the lounge should be able to point you in the right direction.

Take care and see you on the playa!

Safety Third!

Hi All. My name's Albert. I'm 17 and currently living in Hamilton, Ontario. Next year i'm hoping to make it my very first Burn. (yay! I'll be a virgin burner! :P ). I first heard about Burning Man from a ... kinda documentary about it. After i saw it, i became intrigued. That was when I was 15 & 1/2. I just bookmarked the burning man site, and I hope that next year around this time, that i will be on my way to BRC with a few frinds i know around here. (More virgin burners! :P ). SO if anyone has any advice, tips, and such i would be very thankful to hear what to expect (i know it's hard to expect anything at BM), good places to camp/stay, and things to do and bring. I would love to hear from people.

Sorry, need to re-say part of last message.

(I know it's hard to GUESS WHAT TO EXPECT at BM. Just so many people with so many styles and intersts. Hope no one thought i was trying to say something mean about BM.)

... I'm Meep!

Post by Meep » Fri Sep 10, 2004 10:31 am

Hi. I'm Meep. I am brand, brand new to the entire idea of Burning Man and am making my initial preparations to attend my first burn.. Have not yet decided whether to get in at just the local level here in AZ, or whether to dive in and burn for the first time at BM 2005.

A long, weird road, down SCA Boulevard and Paganism Way, has led me to the idea of going to Burning Man at least once. I am more writer than artist, but I do create some interesting things using programs like Photoshop, Bryce and Poser. I haven't decided how/if I want to incorporate that into my first burn yet.

I am disabled and have no real demands on my schedule. No children and only my cats. I have my beloved Master, but right now, we're trudging through the whole 'long-distance relationship' thing until he can join me here in Tucson.

I am currently going through all the required reading and compiling my list of considerations for preparation for a burn. I know I need to experience the Playa... even if only once, even coming to it at the age of 40, even being a little bit broken. And... even being straightedge.

Yep... you read that right; I am indeed straightedge. I'm not one of the 'hardliner-mean-Vegan-beat you up for smoking' types at all; I don't have the right to make those choices for others. I stick with the oroginal four rules: 'don't drink, don't have promiscuous sex, don't do drugs, don't smoke'. I don't mind if other people want to do those things (well, unless someone blows smoke right in my face intentionally or something! ).

I'm curious about gifting. When I get to Burning Man, I may have only my abilities as a Tarot reader to offer, as well as a really silly sense of humor and some general... well, my friends call it Meepness. Is that enough? Do I need to find a way to do more?

Ehhh, I'm Doug, been in here since before 2004 burn. First burn was back in 1991, I was very young and very dumb.
Back in school full time to further myself and career. I work very little as a result.
I started life musically listening to what the big bro had going: Led Zep, Black Sabbath, etc etc. Quickly found punk rock and classical, two extremes, and add to these often. Some jazz has found it's way into my ears lately.
I brought a pedicab out to this years burn (2004) and have now decided that it is going to morph into an electric powered multi multi seated open air freaky playa transportation device. I love pedaling, I ride century's and double century's, but the deep soft dust on the playa really takes it out of you when trying to move lots of weight with your legs. Thus the tranportation or mutation rather to electricity.
A couple of things that I love and cherish are good friends and intelligence. I would do basically anything to be surrounded by both.
See ya all next year and thanks...

Never underestimate the power of a silly sence of humor in a crowd like this.
You don't mention the nature of your disability--and you don't have to, but I'm gonna give you my canned illness and disability speech. Read the survival guide from this year carefully--and next year's when it comes out. If there are any issues arising between your disabillity and heat, dust, altitude or any other feature of the Black Rock Desert think it through carefully. Have a back up plan. Be med complient. Talk with people who know about medical issues and about the Desert. Be ready to leave if you have to (we left early this year because fo the dust and athsma.) If you want to talk with the Emergency Services Department (the department the medics volenteer for) then now is a descent time to e-mail-- [email protected] You might not get an answer today, but it's gonna happen, and it won't get lost in the July/August rush to get ready. If there's any thing you don't feel like asking in public on the board, you can private message directly to a person who you think would have a good answer. Hot Wheelz camp is probably a good resource if you have mobiity issues.

::wan smile:: My disability isn't one of the more visible ones. I have a form of autism called 'Aspergers Syndrome'. I've found coping mechanisms for things like big outdoor pagan events, Pennsic War and science fiction conventions; if I start getting overstimulated, I know to get back to wherever I camp and hide until I'm... well, human again instead of a Staring Wall-Eyed Eebiejeebie.

Heck, I was halfway thinking of tossing a note out and seeing if any other burners are aspies or anywhere on the autism spectrum.

I do remember Asperger's being referenced on a thread months ago, but fairly briiefly. Don't worry, I have a "hidden disability" too. But I've spent enough time with the larger disability community (and they've done enough for me) that I've taken it on myself to advocate for all disabilities on the e-playa. I don't always do it well, but I put myself out there and try to have a good attitude about it. And take my licks. I kept it general a) because I didn't have details, and b) to allow you the space not to discuss specifics if you didn't want to.
I sometimes suspect my father of havind (undiagnosed) aspergers. I don't know if it's medically correct, but it does get to some of his cluelessness. (Math Professor covers it too.) Just so long as you know how to take care of yourself. I find that the wind on playa--which can be strong and insessant--is a big factor in feeeling over stimulated, overwhelmed. Just an FYI.

Wow, good point..

Post by Meep » Fri Sep 10, 2004 4:44 pm

I found the... oddest.... way to deal with wind. For me, it helps to kind of find ways to play with it. If it's going to press on me and be always there, I may as well have a big foofy gauzy cloak to play like I'm flying with! Believe it or not, that's been a help at some of the windier events I've been too. I'm already fiddling with costume ideas to compensate for some of the things I suspect might bug me... like working on a way to incorporate the goggles and dust mask into a desert-warrior-looking thing.

I've had to be. The world was a scary, strange, prickly place for me up until the diagnosis. Knowing what was really wrong was an epiphany for me. Finally I could feel like I had a name for what makes me see the world all weirdly instead of watching people get mad at me and not know why... or not understanding so many social conventions and wondering why... or suddenly not being able to handle talking to people and having them wonder why. Now that I know I'm just wired differently, I can cope.

One reason why I MUST get to Burning Man... I have a deep sense that it's okay to be a complete space-alien (as my friends call me). I would love to find a city where I am allowed to just be me and not constantly have to fake being normal.

I wouldn't recommend selling your teeth, Dianne O'Thirst keeps talking about all kinds of great food she makes while at BM....

I've got some problems, too. OCD and chronic depression, both of which I have been taking Prozac for (or, more accurately, the generic equivalent of Prozac). I suspect I might actually be manic-depressive, but my psychictrists don't seem convinced (plus, the side effects of lithium are much worse than the side effects of Prozac).

I haven't heard the term "straightedge" before... :?:

Hello burners,

I plan on making it to the playa in 2005. It will be my first burn, but I've been checking out the posts and the website, and I feel like I've been there already.

I'm a 32 year old, recently single male. Looking for a cool lady to accompany me next year. Any burners in the Milwaukee area? Yeah, I'm a cheesehead. Maybe I'll bring some to the playa. Maybe I'll start a camp cheesehead, and make a huge mutant cheesehead out of my van. LOL.
Do I have the right idea?

Anyway, I just wanted to give a shout out to everyone, and let them know the glowmaster will be in the house 2005.
I can put a glow on anything.

Anything!

As far as I know, Camp Cheeshead is as valid an idea as any! Then again, 2005 will (hopefully) be my first Burning Man, too!

Hey, I am over in Madison, WI, but, being a guy, do not fit the "lady" part of your request.... :P

I'm not just looking to find a woman. I just want to meet some cool people. I would like to maybe start to get to know a few people on eplaya before I attend, so I can find some of them when I get there. Maybe even organize a ride out there with a few people from the midwest.
Hopefully with the help of eplaya I won't be one of those newbies that people keep complaining about.
I can put a glow on anything.

Anything!

So, I'm new, never been to Burning Man, but my boyfriend went this year and he's got me so excited about it that I've already started planning costumes and figuring out how I'm going to miss the first week of classes so I can go.

Anyway, I'm Redd. I'm 22, 3rd semester AAU student and furry (not a furvert, I should mention) with a penchant for tattoos and piercings. I'm hoping to meet a bunch of people from the SF area and make so new friends to replace the old ones I lost when I moved up here. Hopefully I'll get to know a bunch of you guys next year or at some of the events in between then and now.

And I, at least, recognize the distinction between the two. (I won't speak for any of the rest of these rummies.) There's a decently-sized furry community here in the Bay Area, if you haven't found them yet (only four more months till the next FurCon, and they generally have a noticeable presence at the other cons in the area - I'm a regular at the SuitDance at BayCon).

You have no idea how happy it makes me that you understand the distinction between the two. Alot of people I know don't seem to see the difference (thanks alot Mtv, Vanity Fair and CSI). But you make me happy so if I ever meet you, I am obligated to give you a cookie of your choice. :D

I am aware of the furry community around here and am loosely associated with it, though most of them I find rather....oh, I'm not sure of the word I want to use here...unsavory? Well, that will work. I just don't care for the drama within the community and the sexually based aspect of it. It's not what I feel furry is, not to me, at least. But I do go to Furcon and this year I will attend as usual, but I don't have many people within the community that I would refer to as friends, unfortunatly. Aquantances, perhaps.

A good question and one worthy of an answer that I shall give now:

The furry community is alot of things to alot of people. To some people, they are furry because they have a love of anthropomorphic art (art that depics animals with human attributes such as Disney's Robin Hood), or because they have some sort of sexual attraction to such characters. I myself think that furry is the modern equivelant of spirit guides that are prevelant in so many other cultures. It bothers me that people debase the idea by making it just sex, but there's not alot I can do about it if that's the way they feel. Personally, it has nothing to do with my sexual idenity and I keep the two very seperate. Umm...let's see..there is some good stuff within the furry community. At Furcon, I have been to artists and writers panels, heard about advances in biotechnology and listened to stand up comedy. It's very diverse.
