I have mixed feelings about the pavilion. I'm still not sure if I like it or not yet.

I'm excited!!
I think I'm starting to understand Fertility 2.0 now. It's about thinking outside of the box in terms of what fertility means. Growth, pollination, the spread of ideas, movements and attitudes...
Also, bee costumes, yes.

i am so fucking suing larry's ass into the dust...
Black Rock City is a kind of Petri dish. Theme camps cling in fertile clusters to its latticework of streets, artworks tumble out of it, like pollen on the air. These nodes of interaction mutate, grow and reproduce their kind. Burning Man communities have now escaped this capsule world: our culture in a Petri dish has effloresced - it spreads across five continents. This year's art theme contemplates the tendency of any being or living system to create abundant life.

Re: Art Theme Announcement
I like the base. I didn't even get to go up on the structure in 2011. It was always closed when I was near it.
It probably didn't help that I didn't arrive until late Wednesday evening. I like the bigger more interactive bases. My first year was Evolution and the tangled bark trees were FANTASTIC. I loved watching them burn. Though it was a bit scary when the conclave started looking back at us to see if they could escape after the initial boom. Those trees burned like a mofo.
As for the 2.0 of the theme. I still don't get that. I've sold software for years and it brings up all kinds of buggy thoughts. (You should always wait for a .1 release, blah blah blah). Web 2.0 was marketed by my last employer ad nauseam.
But at least this is a formal announcement and on the website. Go forth and uh, multiply?

Re: Art Theme Announcement
I like the 2.0 aspect of it… when Fertility was first used as the theme back in 1997 it was just after the LLC had been formed. Here we are, just after the formation of the Project, which will eventually oversee the event and carry the ideals forward. And I think in the first go-round (from what I've been told), it was all about genitals and the reproductive system. Now, with so many people on a planet with limited resources - it's time to redefine it. I hope that in addition to plenty of genital and reproductive system art, we see some stuff about sustainability, renewability, repurposing, spreading ideas, and maybe even some cool space colonization stuff.

Sorry if I quoted you out of context, but yeah, me too.
From the last paragraph of the theme announcement (for those that just looked at the picshures):
"culture, as a living system, has the power to create and recreate itself. It thrives as a result of numberless and unplanned interactions. All that's really needed is a fitting social vessel to sustain it. The founders of our city now propose to seek out new environmental contexts where our ethos can take root."

Same here. It is alarming that the folks who organize such a large and important event can be so clueless. Surely, several people must have proofed this announcement? Makes me wonder what other blunders they are capable of.
That said, I'll just enjoy TTITD without paying much attention to any official "theme" -- as I always do.

I'm ignoring the 2.0 so I can make a few of these:

Jackasses.
The quoted passage is from one of Jeffries' many books on natural history, published in 1884. Never been a huge fan of the genre when it drops its drawers and displays its huge white anthropomorphic ass, but it's useful for pithy quotes, and immune to your Puritanical fascination with the double entendre.

Re: Art Theme Announcement

I get it now. The word "Fertility" has been leaking for months, so obviously it was a temporary name, a place holder name. Then somebody simply neglected to replace it with the real theme name, PETRI DISH, in the announcement.
Anyroad, I've been running Vasectomy 1.0 since 1976 and see no need for further development there.
