Who's Selling Ice: 2012

Post by illy dilly » Mon Mar 19, 2012 2:51 pm

Selling ice in Black Rock City is one of my favorite experiences every year, and I know lots of people agree. Weather its your first time volunteering or you're a returning Penguin a nice easy going shift at Arctica, Ice Cubed, or Ice Nine can be a really rewarding experience. So, who plans to sell ice this year? And where?

Last year we discussed possibly taking over an ice shift at one of the ice stations so that a bunch of eplayans could all sell together. Is anyone else interested in doing that again this year?

I'll start it off:
I'm probably going to register for my usual Tuesday and Thursday shifts. 2011, I went for noon-3 but realized I like the 9-noon shift a little better. So I'll probably shoot for 9-noon on Tuesday and Thursday this year. Each year I've signed up for slinger, but have ended up being a pusher a few times, I'll probably just volunteer and go where ever the coordinator needs me that day.
If we get all the EA passes for our camp, I'm also thinking about picking up a Sunday pre-event shift.

Oh good golly do they sell ice on Sunday before Gates open?

I sent in a volunteer thingy for ice this year but have not heard, back, hmmm....

I was thinking I'd sign up for 9-noon Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. But Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday would fit better with the BDC activities.

Ice Cubed, if we get placed where we have been. 8)

And I have a couple of strong healthy young minions who want to help too.

Last year they had ice service at Center Camp for a few hours on Saturday and Sunday before the gates opened. Thank goodness for that, a couple of our coolers had a lot of melt and that saved us from having to send someone off-playa for supplies on Saturday.

Hell yeah! Picking a few extra shifts huh?

I typically try to avoid Monday shifts. Typically I'm still setting up on Monday.... if I don't have vehicle trouble and even get there by Monday morning. Tuesday morning is a good day for me, it always helps me really get in burn mode, and leave the Default world behind.
Though, if I do get there Friday before, and we're pretty set up Sunday and Monday, maybe I'll just stroll in and ask if they need help (Yep, I we all know the answer to that one).

Lets try to shoot for getting a whole eplaya shift for the 9-noon, Tuesday @ Ice Cubed.

I'm definitely doing it again this year. It was a wonderful way to stay cool during the day. I was a "runner" so I got to carry around giant orders of ice and hold them precious, frozen cubes of joy against my chest.

Plus, add in a few cold beers here and there and its a wonderful way to give back to the community!

Runner?
That is a position I'm not familiar with?

Do you mean the person that takes the ice from the back of the truck to the cash register?

Or did you go around delivering ice to camps?

Yup. I ran back and fourth from the trucks to the cashier. They called me a "runner."

I sent my little app thing in back in october I think. I have not heard anything back as well. I don't remember what days I signed up for. I know it was around the events at BDC for sure and I think it was 12-3 shifts for 2 days?

After reading this thread last year I was looking forward to some ice shifts with an eplaya crew, but until I get tickets volunteering for anything seems senseless as I may not make it to the playa and that would leave my shift short of people.

Edit: Just noticed this is my 1,001 post - don't remember what the 1k post was though.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Woo hoo! Happy post-iversary!
I have faith you'll find a ticket!
Also, it seems each year in July the hit up everyone and ask that you confirm what days you are working if you're going to make it to the playa at all.

Hell Yeah G-Dawg! Would you be down to work a Tuesday 9-noon shift at ice cubed? Sort of an eplaya Ice shift?

For sure! If we do set up a 9-noon shift @ Ice cubed would you be interested?

Ice-cubed is 3:00 right ?(okay my math and memory suck)

I will be signing up again there and doing mostly 9-noon shifts, although I may put down for a 12-3 shift too.
Maybe tues, wed, sat, sun ?
I was a slinger last year. I noticed there was more of a shortage of pushers-but what a tough ass job that is.

I think the llc was very lucky to find two names that fit with both ice and with the plazas they are on. What if they'd been on 7:30 and 4:30--I'm not sure that there would have been anything clever to call them.

Interesting!
Thanks for the info! Sounds like it could be a pretty 'out there' sort of book?

Just got volunteered to work Tuesday and Thursday from 9-Noon at Ice Cubed.
I also mentioned in the little box at the bottom of the volunteer form that a few of us from eplaya are trying to get together to work a shift Tuesday 9-noon @ ice cubed. I meant to leave a URL for this page but totally spaced it.
I figure I'll pick up more early week shifts once I know if our camp got placed or not. More specifically if we get enough EA passes or not.

HELL YEAH!!!
We're totally going to have a full crew by August!!!!!
How many do we need?
Cashier= 3
Slinger= 3
Pusher= 2 or 3
Greeter=2
Barker= 1 or 2

So we need about 12 or 13 people. And really, that early in the week and the early morning, we can probably get away with 1 greeter and 2 pushers. And best yet, since the Tuesday morning shift, isn't as crazy as like the Friday mid day shifts, it will give us extra time to slack off and hang out!!!

Who else should we recruit?
