Coconut water electrolyte hydration
Yep. Delicious coconut water. I've been getting Zola brand. It's really good. 1 liter paper bottles, easy to crush and carry out. I've not been a huge fan of most electrolyte drinks, mostly because of taste. If you don't like coconut, well, you probably won't like the water. I do and so I will drink this. Anyway , an alternative.

Re: Coconut water electrolyte hydration
My buddy had suggest last year or the last, that we get coconut water, he had read some article that it was good for hangovers. The last Monday after the burn that year I was making my way alone thru the slowly dissipitating neighborhood and passed a guy with a machete taking the top off of coconuts. I stopped and mentioned what my buddy had said. The guy handed me a coconut full of water for myself, and another to pass on to my friend. I told the guy his generosity was too much. He said, here is one coconut for you, and one for your friend, who manifest it. That was some good drinkin'. And then we cracked the shells....

I keep it around the house for hangovers or really hot days, and now am bringing enough to the playa for at least one 16oz can a day. Just make sure it's the kind without added sugar.

This stuff is amazing. I use it for all camping, festivals, etc. Powdered coconut water. Mixes with water, great flavor, and no boxes or cans to deal with. If you mix a serving of this with Orange Zip Fizz and Orange Vitalyte, plus a little vodka or tequila, you have yourself the most refreshing and uplifting cocktail yet crafted at BRC (in my opinion.) Epic hangover cure, and tastes like a fruit smoothie. Seriously, I am expecting a Nobel for this any year now... :p

I've tried every coconut water brand that I could find. So far, "Taste Nirvana" wins for best taste IMO.
They sell it in bottles and these larger cans. I'm planning on getting a couple cases to bring with me this year.

Coconut water is some good stuff! Be sure to read the labels... Some actually add sugar to it. The Amy and Brian tall cans don't... And are my favorite.
Also... Be warned.. It does work as a laxative if you are drinking a lot of it!

I really like the Blue Monkey one.. w/Pulp.
Not sure if there is added sugars, but it does have some.

I wouldn't worry too much about the formaldehyde bit, but it is interesting....
Be aware that young Thai Coconuts must undergo intensive chemical treatment to assure a long shelf life. The coconuts may be dipped in formaldehyde to help prevent molding and to keep the meat white. The formaldehyde will leech into the fruit and water. If ordering fresh young green Thai coconuts, or any other fresh young green coconuts that come from overseas markets for that matter, do your research on the company and inquire if the coconuts have been treated before buying and consuming

I used the Blue Monkey powdered kind last year. Worked well for hydration and electrolyte replacement, though I didn't love the taste.

I love coconut water for hydration and electrolytes. I usually get the Zico brand from Trader Joe's. They have different flavors, too. My favorite is Mango.
As for the health benefits, here's what Zico's website has to say: "ZICO contains the five electrolytes that support your body with what it needs to stay hydrated and perform at your best. One ZICO has more potassium than a banana – 15 times more than most sports drinks – to prevent cramping. Drink ZICO before or during a workout for the natural energy you need for optimal performance. After a workout, ZICO replenishes and re-hydrates you to aide recovery."

Re: Coconut water electrolyte hydration
For as long as I can remember I've had problems with maintaining my electrolyte balance during heavy exertion. Whether fit or fat, I always had to suffer through muscle cramps at some point during or after the exertion. Coconut water to me is like a miraculous instant cramp relief elixir. If I cramp I grab the ccw, down about 8-12 ounces, and feel almost instantaneous relief. If I even feel the hint of a cramp I do the same and it goes away. Powdered ccw worked just as well too and was much cheaper.

Re: Coconut water electrolyte hydration
Yup. I've loved coconut water ever since I lived in Costa Rica for many years and would jump up and grab a nice baby green one to smack on a rock and drink out of after surfing. People there have known for years about it being nature's Gatorade.. so it was funny to see it explode up here like it did.
First time on the playa with it.. and it was pure GOLD. I took the 2L paper carton kind and had one in the cooler every day and it was magical. Next year there will be a perfect ration of at least 1.5 cartons per person, per day. Period.
Oh, that and iced coffee drinks in the can for the morning instead of hot coffee. *thumbs up*

Re: Coconut water electrolyte hydration
We resurrected some kids next to us with mocktails containing coconut water. They were severely dehydrated; chills, lethargy, headaches, the works. We would make them juice and coconut water mocktails and watch them perk right up. By the end of the week, dehydration snuck up on me and I found myself feeling horrible on Friday and these mocktails really helped. I wasn't a believer until then. I am bringing it every year now.
Incidentally, the mocktails always seemed to turn into cocktails by 6pm.

My girlfriend's a big fan of the stuff, she goes for something in an aluminum can (empties can be carted off to recycle camp), I want to say it's the blue monkey one with the pulp. Serves her as a great refresher and rejuvenator by day, and mixes well with Malibu (she pours it 50/50 and calls it 'cocobu') once the sun starts going down.

I THOUGHT I brought a ton - probably did if Jewel hadn't taken humanitarian compassion on several (many) dehydrated and hung over souls. Rather than be stingy next year we will just have to take lots more. And we brought variety. Note: since it was at our bar that put them in that 'condition' there was a certain obligation to put the lime in the coconut and drink it all up...

Re: Coconut water electrolyte hydration
A nice sleep-deprived guy named Michael on 8:15 and C almost broke my pinky by tossing me a box of 16 or so coconut water servings a day before Gates opened. (I'd asked him what was in there, and assumed it was something lightweight. Oops. I've made better decisions in my whole life).
But I drank 1-2 a day all week. It was great. Shiny blue boxes. Good stuff. Thanks, Michael.

Re: Coconut water electrolyte hydration
I've only tried one brand, last year, off-playa. Wasn't disgusted, but didn't really like it enough to finish it. And of course, I no longer remember what brand it was.
Is it actually good, or just spot hitting on playa?

First time having it was this year and it was pretty good. Might pick up some for electrolyte re-hydration in lieu of something like Gatorade, if I don't really want the fructose.

I can't stand coconut water by itself. The trick for me is to mix it with various fruit juices and mineral water to give it a nice fizz.

I tried it on playa. Didn't like it one bit. Maybe it would be better at ambient temp instead of chilled. You know, like it comes out of the coconuts. I drank it often enough on Diego Garcia, the damn things fell on us if we weren't careful.

Zico coconut water is what helped me make the transition to tolerating Vegas's summertime heat without getting dehydrated all the time. I buy the stuff by the case and keep 2 cases on hand at all times. The stuff just flat out works for me. It's gotta be chilled, I don't care for it if it's at room temperature.

Re: Coconut water electrolyte hydration
The camp I was in had a lot of this. It was a life saver, as we ran out of bananas really early. Personally I found the weather far tamer than what I'm used to (I jog in the middle of the day, in up to 80% humidity) but it was still challenging. I talk a big game, but I dehydrated TWICE this past summer, so yeah, shame on me. Had to go to the hospital once. Would have the other time but I was at the top of Mt. Fuji.
Been on a hydration kick since, and this stuff helps. It's painfully expensive here though, so I'm back on good old H2O. TMI maybe, but being better hydrated the last few months has made me far more regular, and let's face it, that's a good thing out in the desert!
