If you get through, can you tell George and Lilo that I"m sorry I never really knew them (but don't mention the ostrich egg or samovar) and Victoria that her creepy racism still pisses me off?ygmir wrote:I'll be calling the ancestors later.
sure..........I'll try to call them once I'm done with mine........how will I know them? is there a secret word?theCryptofishist wrote:If you get through, can you tell George and Lilo that I"m sorry I never really knew them (but don't mention the ostrich egg or samovar) and Victoria that her creepy racism still pisses me off?ygmir wrote:I'll be calling the ancestors later.

Lilo was my grandmother's name. Short for Liselotte! Though growing up, I only ever knew her as "Omi". To the point where I assumed it was her name, until I was told differently in Jr. High.theCryptofishist wrote:If you get through, can you tell George and Lilo that I"m sorry I never really knew them (but don't mention the ostrich egg or samovar) and Victoria that her creepy racism still pisses me off?ygmir wrote:I'll be calling the ancestors later.

"Your granddaughter is a fish" should do quite nicely.ygmir wrote:sure..........I'll try to call them once I'm done with mine........how will I know them? is there a secret word?theCryptofishist wrote:If you get through, can you tell George and Lilo that I"m sorry I never really knew them (but don't mention the ostrich egg or samovar) and Victoria that her creepy racism still pisses me off?ygmir wrote:I'll be calling the ancestors later.

hhmm........well, I recently got a letter, from a cousin, I never knew I had, a previously unknown (by me) grand daughter of my paternal grandmother. Up to now, I only had male cousins.........theCryptofishist wrote:Hm. Maybe. But as my grandmother didn't have any known grandsons, it would be kinda amazing to find this out.

A "yute"? You mean Jude or Jutlander? (Or maybe "youth"...)Nipple wrote:She lived in Germany as a yute.
My father's family left Germany in the late 30s. My grandfather's family was Jewish. He left first, leaving my grandmother, my father, and his two sibs, my great-grandmother and some sort of cousin, plus various pets, behind, as there were currency restrictions at the time. He took work as an expert witness to make money before he sent for them. When it came time for the rest of the family to come over, the SS colonel wouldn't grant the exit visas. Lilo went to his office, dressed in her best, and pulled some sort of "if I act as if everything is normal and in order he'll grant them" and what do you know, she was right. The SS still hung out and watched as they packed...Nipple wrote:Elizabeth Charlotte! I had never heard that before!
She met my grandfather while fleeing Europe with her family due to some political strife in the early 40's.
That's really neat!
(She lived in Germany as a yute. That area of Germany though is now modern day Poland, and the city was razed during the war. I'd have to check the name when I get home. Only recently did I learn that my Große Opa fought in both WWI and WWII (Almost not old enough for WWI, and almost too old for WWII, best luck ever on his part.) He was drafted and turns out he was captured as a prisoner of war early on by the Soviets, and sent East. At the end of the war they just opened the door on the labor camps and sent him on his way. Apparently it took him forever to find the family. They had fled Germany, Lilo married a US Serviceman (my grandfather, whom I only met a couple times) and her and her brothers were about to move to Ohio with my Great Aunt Gisela. Later my grandmother remarried the man I'd know as my grandfather... (trading this time, for an Army Officer and ex-WWII POW) and moved Große Opa Fritz in with them making for what would eventually sound like a terrible sitcom... The story could be completely false as related to me, but... that's how I heard it and I'm sticking with it.)
