The man burned?
Um, I must be a total square.
My mom is like: didn't you know the man burned and they're prosecuting someone for it?
Then what made it worse, she was like:everybody knows that.
Did I mention my mom is almost 60 and a corporate puppet?
I love her more than anything in the world but she just made me feel out of touch.

Thizz what it is, lets get things clear...
Yes, it burned early last year. They rebuilt it and it burned again at the scheduled time. Do a Google or Eplaya search for "paul addis" to get more details.
Depending who you ask it was a very sad, very wonderful, and/or very stupid thing. Expect something unexpected to happen again this year. But not the thing you expect.
Of course, since the Man burned, it's not going to happen this year. Sad, sad, sad.
I have Paul's address in jail, by the way, and I'll be sending him a card from the BRC post office: "having a wonderful time, wish you were here."
:->
That makes me feel really bad. As this is my first burn and it won't even be a burn...

Many of you may have already seen it, but here's the link to the web site for Addis' production of "Gonzo: A Brutal Chrysalis" about Hunter S. Thompson.
http://gonzoduke.com/
You can see photos and the video trailer there.
Interestingly, when you click on the link for Upcoming Shows, you get this message: "Regrettably, due to Paul's illness, all upcoming shows have been canceled. We hope to resume the run upon his recovery."

Huh? Ya know, they build a new Man every year and burn it every year. So technically, the Man's already been burned like 22-23 times before...so what are you missing? Are you missing the arson pre-burn? Well, yeah you missed that... BFD
> buy the ticket..take the ride
Well, not to get all philosophical and all, but that applies in all directions. I bought my ticket, and my ride included the pre-burn. I take the ride as I find it. Same for you, right?
Paul burned the Man, he bought his ticket and got his ride, too. BMOrg bought their ticket and got their ride. C'est la vie.
I have no clue what Hunter Thompson would have thought. I remember him getting kicked off a candidate's campaign plane for reporting heavy drug use in his Rolling Stone coverage of whatever presidential election year it was - everyone knew the story was an outright lie. Mr. Thompson bought his ticket and got his ride. :-> I'd think Mr. Thompson had the courage to attack politicians at the highest level for their cowardice and currying of favor from moneyed interests. Maybe he would have appreciated an attack on stale convention? Was that what the pre-Burn was? Or did I just imagine it? Who can tell?
We all get to have our opinions. I didn't choose to buy my ticket for this life, but I'm _taking_ the ride and making it mine.

But stale convention or not (which I disagree with), it wasn't "his" to burn at that point. The Man was everyone's.
But even beyond that, Paul put others at risk. Though it's been reported that he did try to move people away, it's also been said there were a few folks under The Man at the time. I hope I'm wrong.
I just shudder a bit when I see him in that trailer with a "gun" in his hands, as it should be apparent from his "church plans" that he was coming unglued.

Here is a link to an amazing sequence from Monday night/Tuesday morning last year. It shows the "1st man", the full moon and incredibly a shot of Addis setting the man on fire. Yes, he is in the shot up on the top of the tent. Check it out!

Just a quick note to the first timers. The Man will be back again this year to be burned yet again. Don't miss the show!

hsdavis...great shots!
I bought the ticket..and took the ride... unfortunately, I was passed out for the pre burn..woke up briefly, hearing my campmates yelling about the man burning.. Thankfully, the other who knows how many thousands got to take the ride too..like I said, bring an extra bottle of whiskey to donate to the DPW.
that said..paul's little prank sounds more like Oscar Zeta Acosta than Hunter..
kinda like sept.11 though..seemed to bring the community @ Burning Man together... Glad no one was hurt

Paul Addis has died
http://sfappeal.com/news/2012/10/man-wh ... -addis.php
Reports say a man stepped in front of a BART train Saturday night (Oct 27); that man has been identified as Paul Addis, according to this source.
The SF Chronicle has a report which does not identify the person here:

Re: The man burned?
I'm wondering who's gonna step up and bring a Paul Addis memorial to the playa next year.
Might I suggest something interactive that includes a Nerf BART train?

Re: The man burned?
Sitting in a bar with John Law shortly after 9-11, we both thought flying a large R/C plane into the Man would have been the ideal way to light it the next year. Probably a good thing PA didn't chose something along those lines.

I was considering burning a Paul Addis effigy on the Monday before the Burn, but Louise thought some people would consider it in poor taste. I'll have to show her to two posts above mine. :->

Phil, I would not say that is in poor taste at all. He was a troubled man who felt compelled to take his own life. I did not like what he did, but he deserves to be honored as much as anyone does!!
I hope he has found the peace in death that he was never able to find in life.
(Let me know where & when and I will do my best to be there...)

Of course it's in poor taste.
I'm not sure what that has to do with it?
Will you use a small train to light it?
