What a great party/ adventure this is becoming! Kudos Doc! I'm really happy for those of you who are going. Just wondering, what is the condition of the playa right now, are parts of it wet? Also, perhaps you should bring something to burn! Have fun!

From the looks of Gerlach, I believe that the playa has some snow on it. Temps have been below freezing throughout N. Nevada for a bit now (daytime and night time)
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Not realy.

Goathead may pull something that would melt a significant portion from the playa.

Yes Yggy but we can all pass. 8)

Lemme get this right: current most popular plan on the table is for brunch at Harrah's on the Sunday, wave the bus-goers goodbye and then mount up for a field trip to the playa? Just to write our names in the snow maybe but hey I am up for that, I'll have boots and a fur coat. 8) Yggy will have a shovel I am sure.

So if that is what we are doing, can we have a head count? With Yggy, Lucky and Elorrum we have room for at least 12.

Moon are you bringing your vehicle to Reno? TinkerMom would be a great one to drive for you, I have seen her with a truck and she is awesome.

Yeah, MDF, I think that is the talk, after brunch with everyone.

So, if that's the plan for those staying on for Sunday, yeah, lets get a head count, and decide if we want to rent a van big enough, or caravan in a couple vehicles.

I think it's all open, FJ. it'd be great to stop, in any case, I don't think anyone will be under a huge time constraint. I don't want to speak for others, though. if nothing else, I've had some great pie there.

I won't make it, but if I was, appitizers and a drink at Bruno's would be part of the side trip.

The timing seems about right for a snack between brunch and dinner, no? 8)

Possible but not likely.

If I came for a 4 day stay I could win enough in the casino to cover the trip.

Just cause I may not be there does'nt mean I can't play with the planning.

Count two more in, one of whom has a class A CDL, and is willing to drive...
if there are enough of us, seems like renting a van or bus would be cheaper in the long run than bringing a bunch of vehicles.

I can't imagine going all the way there without a stop at Bruno's! It's almost a prerequisite of going to Gerlach!

A van would be a lot of fun for good bonding time. Count me in as I got a " get out of hanging with relatives" pass

Make sure any vehicles you rent for such a journey have great tires/traction (you may want to aim for 4WD), and give yourself a LOT of extra time. Depending on the weather, it could end up being slow going.

I've been to the playa in winter. You know that wind which blows all the dust around? It will chill your very bones in the cold weather. Bundle up, lovelies!

We drove our Jeep out a short distance, got out. No snow, but windy as fuck. The playa surface was bouncy underfoot, so we did not drive out further. Too easy to get stuck and we had no support vehicles or cell service.

YEAH, no plans on driving out onto the playa. My thoughts are to go to the edge of the packed access, and walk out a ways, and check it out. Maybe go up to 12 mile and see how it is there. It'd have to prove to be super solid and see other vehicles, for my comfort driving out at all. Also, others may have other ideas, so, we'll see when we get there I guess. I know i've been stuck in a playa, and it's not a good thing. But, just going there, seeing it all, will be great. IMHO.
and from 12 mile you're above the city footprint a ways, so should be able to see, if there is any evidence.
Yeah, painfully cold for sure.
