Re: Amtrak Party in Reno!
scenic overlook would be at 12 mile, and maybe over at the gravel pit. they are fairly high above the playa. Depending on vehicle(s) we could explore roads in the hills, but I'm not familiar up there in the western hills.
maybe between now and then someone will hear from GH and he can give a condition of the playa report, or suggestion.
MDF: Littleflower is coming, not sure when she's leaving, so she would probably go, if she's staying until Monday.
ETA: hahaha well, what timing!!

is anyone/is anyone willing, to look into renting a van big enough to carry us all?
I don't mind, if no one else wants to. Or maybe already is.

system a bit weird today, eh, lucky? I don't know who the best rentals are or the area. Most car rental searches turn up at the airport. Avis 12 passenger van about 120 base per day.

Re: Amtrak Party in Reno!
I talked to Enterprise, they have a 15 passenger van, if they can get one available, I estimated the mileage, and, with taxes and fees sounds like about 200 bucks for the day, maybe a little less. Not including fuel.
They're supposed to call in the next day or two, to let me know if they can get a van there. 15 passenger is the biggest they have.

judging by the number of clowns that can fit in a VW, that size van sounds like just the ticket!

Sounds good to me, and if a van is not findable then gosh, for 12 we only need 3 vehicles, and most folks who will still be around Sunday afternoon are local, right? We can figure this out.

Re: Amtrak Party in Reno!
yeah, ok.
so, if everyone agrees, I'll work towards getting a van (they claim they have none available, and in the same breath told me they'd try to find one)
I'd guess around 25 bucks each, including fuel.

Works for me. Pm us if u need money beforehand. We need a driver who won't be
drinking up all the Champagne at brunch. Do we need a designated driver? I can
do it if need be.

Re: Amtrak Party in Reno!
I'm securing a room for Winebuff. We are asking $50 (including all taxes). The two bucks is for my trouble and will be used to buy alcohol. Now that the trip is sold out, we need to start planning the logistics for the party Saturday night. I am not going to be able to do the planning, so Lucky420 or Ygmir or Triken or or Tinkermom or Moonrise or Pinemom/Killbuck/Wildman/anyoneelsefromReno will need to make some decisions. What time does it start? (We'll get to the Sands around 4:30) Where will it be held? (The 15th floor of the Empress Tower--my choice--or Ygmir's suite) If on the 15th floor, whose room is the go-to room? I intend to ask for these people's rooms to be adjacent (if possible, no promises):
Moonrise-Triken-Lucky420-Tinkermom-MyDearFriend-Winebuff so that would be a good place to start. The nexus if you will. I do think that a trip to the huge Jacuzzi on the 17th floor would certainly be in order. And remember, and this is open to everybody, on Sunday morning at 11:30 we will be having champagne brunch at Harrah's ($20/person including tax and tip). OK, now what do we do?
Hi all. I am chiming in on the Saturday night party. I am meeting up with you all in Reno on Saturday and have a suite on the 17th floor. Its all part of celebrating my birthday weekend. If the idea is to have a floating party (rooms on multiple floors) then our room can be counted in. I read in one of the posts that this could be booze potluck, which sounds fun. We can also have food delivered to the rooms from Mels or other local establishments that deliver. There is also a really good mexican restaurant a few blocks from the hotel.
I also wanted to throw-out an idea for those out-of-towner peeps not going on the field trip to the playa on Sunday, that there are some awesome burner friendly establishments that are definitely worth visiting and not far from the Sands; Junkee Clothing Exchange, Melting Pot World Emporium and Twin Cities Surplus... just to name my favorites.

Re: Amtrak Party in Reno!
I got a call back from Enterprise, the message said they have a 15 passenger van available. I'll beleive it all, when I talk directly to someone, though.
their rate is 149 for all day Sunday.......but estimating mileage and taxes and such, 200 still seems dang close. Fuel will be extra.
It's at the Grand Sierra, the airport one is closed on Sunday.
I asked for a call back and confirmation,so, hope that will be soon.

If I might butt in for a moment to suggest perhaps looking for a rental agency coupon online. Coupons might not apply to 15 passenger vans, but if one does you could get as much as 25% off the rate, plus reduced mileage costs. One such online coupon worked very well among box truck campers last August...
