Re: One Item for BM a Day
Well, I never wanted to be an "RV'er", but I wanted a few creature comforts. Last Friday I bought one of these, used, like-new. Very similar to this, but it has a great propane kitchen and a stand-up shower. I am setting it up as a solar-power unit, (no generator). About the only upgrade I want is a larger/better cooking surface, as I am bringing 68 pounds (!) of BACON. Got my tickets last Wed. I am good to go.

Hey Clocks, the one I found is a 1999 Jayco, the basic box is 15 feet long, and with it set up, it is about 24' with great headroom. Surprisingly spacious. Towing weight is about 2000 pounds dry, tows very easily. Single axle, surge brakes, standup shower and "cartridge" type porta-potty. I am not going to use the toilet, as there are JOTS near where I camp. (3:30 and J). Propane stove, propane water heater, 12v water system with 17 gallon water tank, 12v/propane refridge, and lots of nice ammenities. I researched these types for a while before I started looking for the one I decided was the best. These used Jaycos are top rated, and after looking at many different makes and models, the one I bought was what I thought was the best of the bunch. Most camping websites say to go with electric barkes, that surge are the second choice. I found, so far, that the surge are OK. But! I am dragging this from Virginia. I will see how it handles in the Colorado hills. I am going to test drive it in some of our Blue Ridge Mountains and see before I start out on a 6,000 mile drive. Mine has a roof-mounted AC unit that I am going to carefully remove. I don't need to haul 125 pounds there and back that I don't need. I am planning on using mostly 12v, and have bought some nice 18w solar panels to keep the charge on a set of 2 deep-cycle batteries. I am upgrading the tires to steel-belted radials, as the bias-ply tires that come on these are real crap. Made in China crap. The blue book on this model is around 4-5 grand in great shape. I paid 3 grand even. They run 8-10k new. They also make them smaller, like a 10 foot model that has a nice floor plan, but I wanted a little more room, plus the stand up shower will be nice. I always have used the shower tent out there, solar bag type, but it will be nice to step out of the shower onto something 'notplaya". Another nice thing about the popup types, as you are driving, you can see the vehicle behind you...no blind spots. Priceless.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Found a couple cool things at the thrift shop today.
Cool purple jacket. Just asking for some EL wire....

And this super cool beanie. I'm thinking some led's inside to light up the blue and green tufts.

I already had the dog. He's there to make sure these new items have a generous coating of dog hair.

What city were you planning on heading out from?? I have only rented from SFO (the San Francisco Airport), but I am certain other burners have a more diverse renting experience... Some rental companies do not like renting vehicles to burning man participants

Re: One Item for BM a Day
I've rented from SFO before... Got charged a $75 cleaning fee last year, but I was too lazy and tired to take care of the interior, I did wash the outside thoroughly which may have kept the fee from being higher. I did my reservation through hotwire and ended up with Fox one year and Avis another. I don't 'look' like a burner so maybe that helped in addition to the fact that I rented the car for two weeks so it may have stayed off their radar. ymmv.

Yeah, sadly I'm a good few years off 21, on the plus side hiring a car shouldn't be a problem.Rice wrote: Awesome! Being 21 or older helps too

I'm planning to fly into San Francisco, actually tried to book it today & get car hired at the same time but there was a bank card snafu (Damn you automated anti-fraud software). Once I get the bank situation sorted I'll book the car online so no need to tell them I'm going to BM. Probably need to get it supercleaned on the way back though

I was gifted a new purple wig the other day... Going to figure out how to incorporate that with my attire.
