Re: Animals on playa this year
I once took my diabetic cat to Alvord Playa for a geology field trip. She was SO annoyed, not to mention covered with playa dust. She went everywhere with me, because she had to have a shot every day, but trying to keep her in the shade and keep her from going into a diabetic coma was totally stressful for 6 whole years. You can't even count the number of times I had to pour syrup down her throat to revive her when she puked up her breakfast after going over curves or dips. She would sit outside the tent and hang out when we camped. In Death Valley we used to joke about the coyotes eating her (not really funny but you had to be there).

I'll be bringing animals this year, but they will be sliced up and kept in the freezer until it's time to grill them.

That's not a goose. It's one of Yaqui, "Man of Knowledge", Don Juan's newer apprentices. The poor newbie still can't quite get down the turning into a crow thing.

Animals beware...
The Black Rock City Animal Control's mobile unit is down for repairs that won't be completed this year, and the Land Yacht will be pressed into service, rounding up, inoculating, and tagging unleashed animals.

Re: Animals on playa this year
Larry caught a possum this year on the playa. Camp across the street was packing up, and the little guy was in their stuff, hiding and hissing. Probably had ridden in on the box trucks in the Texas camp. Larry has had possums as pets before, so he knew how to catch it (milkcrates and heavy leather gloves involved). Young one, thin but lively. Larry made a cage from milkcrates ziptied together, put cardboard around it for privacy, and gave it grapes and watermelon. Nice guy from Texas is going to take it back from whence it came, or try to give it to animal control. The real animal control, you fuckos.
Huh. I should have taken a picture, yeah?

We caught a bat at the man base Saturday morning. Cute little guy but stressed and weak.
He was released the next day and flew away.

Spotted a little tiny dog with it's owners outside a monster RV set up on the outskirts of town. Flea bag was living it up better than me.

The grandfathered desert dogs have little laminates on their collars. I saw a tiny black fuzzball sporting his lam. Cute.
Re: Animals on playa this year
Not exactly animal (neither mineral nor vegetable either) but I saw quite a variety and frequency of different insects this year ranging from spiders, to flies, to moths to other unknown crawlies.
I also saw more dogs in the hands of LEOs than I'd care for but, thankfully, only at a distance.

I could swear I heard crickets on Thursday night pre gate opening, which was confirmed by the amount of them I picked up while mooping.
