Virgin (2013) from Toronto - INTRO

Post by Malcolm » Sat Jun 15, 2013 6:59 pm

HI!

I'm Malcolm, and I'm so excited to be taking part in my first Burning Man this year!

I've been on the fence for years on whether to go for years now, and after some deep conversations with friends of mine, and myself, I finally decided that it's time to go.

This is my first post after registering on eplaya, but I've been an active reader of this site for quite a while now.

For my first year, I'll be going solo, and doing the whole "learn by experience" thing. I've done some extensive research, so I think I'll survive just fine. I hope I don't make to many mistakes.

I'm so excited to attend, and I really hope I get to meet some of the people on this forum that have inspired me to finally take the plunge, and head out to BRC!

Well it's too late - you've already made the worst mistake... ever.... I fixed it for you though.

Welcome aboard - here is a namesake with some ideas for your art car - come and see us at the Meet and Greet and bring something tasty/boozy/funny!

Ooo, now I want to know too!

I never had a chance to sit on a fence. I prepared 2 months, my first time.

It's easy to look back and say "yes" but if you've only heard about the even, or even seen some pictures and stuff, you may question whether it is something you want to invest a lot of time, effort, and time-off on. Then there's the whole "who will I go with?" or "will I be able have fun without anyone I know?"

All these doubts, but in the end it'll turn out okay.

I'm just amazed that that orange stuff carries anyone's weight.

Congrats on finally taking the plunge (both with the event and the board)! You'll probably do fine - you've already done some reading, and I'm sure you'll pick up more bits and pieces along the next several weeks. Good luck and hope to see you out there!

Well said. And if I can add to that; if you do not live in the west coast, let alone in the US, just the logistics alone can be daunting. For my first year, I'm kind of cheating a bit, and going with the Green Tortoise guys. Hopefully once I get my foot on the ground of the Playa, experience it first hand, and make new friends and contacts, next year I will be better prepared to go at it fully on my own.

That's not cheating--to me. First timer, long distance, international travel . . . those are some decent challenges right there. And you'll still need to put up your own tent. :)

Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

I'm not too worried about the tent. I've done quite a bit of camping in many extreme environments, but never the desert, so I'm looking forward to the experience!

I would love to do the road trip, but due to time constraints, I'm going to have to fly down.

If it was a barb-wire fence, you'll fit in with everyone just fine.
