The Bar 2014 Edition
Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Yes, I'll join in on the thanks and appreciation of ALL veterans, not only today, but every day, for the brave sacrifices made to ensure the level of comfort we get to 'take for granted' every day, here in the states. (and I'm not even American) Today was a very fun Veteran's Day run and Monday, another, to benefit our local veterans, with the American Legion Riders.
The trike is a blast to ride, but, dang, it's so much funner when I know my participation is actually helping veterans and their families. We're building houses, feeding whole families, helping in hard times... brings tears to my eyes... *sigh*

Every time I walk past Christmas ornaments all I can think is "Those would make great target practice"
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
That Lee Greenwood song brings back many memories when I was in the USAF.
When I got back from the first gulf war, this song was sung to us returning troops by about 500 people during a welcome home dinner.
Then, when I was deployed to the gulf in 04, Lee Greenwood himself sang this song live for us.
Very special song to many veterans.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Thanks for your service fernley1.
That song was released sometime in the mid 80s. We weren't in any conflict at the time, but since Sept 11th, it's really taken off and has more meaning.
You live in Fernley?! Did you see the picture on the front page of this morning Nevada Appeal? Kids, to young to remember Sept 11th, at Seeliger Elementary School in Carson City singing the National Anthem with their hands over their heart. The two blond boys with glasses and the dark haired boy to their left really look like they're into it.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
beautiful ygmir! Morning unjon, hope those cups of coffee get you revved up to face the day. I'm on cup three, and still meandering. I don't have plans so much as end of weekend disappointment avoidance goals. Trying the semantics of achievement, and seem to be aiming low in that regard. I have a little electronic Christmas tree kit I'd like to put together. I wasted some decent time yesterday disassembling a little motorized light show, greasing it up and getting it back together again, with the same squeaks still. Nice that I didn't bust it up, lots of little plastic gears, and had a close brush with seeing them all in a pile on my desk.

My grandfather was an ambulance driver in a unit in WWI which took 50% casualties. But you're probably talkimg about the all-volunteer American Field Service ambulance corps, which included a number of literary notables, including Ernest Hemingway. There's a book entitled 'Gentlemen Volunteers' that came out about two years ago that tells their story - I read it, and I can recommend it.H.G.Crosby wrote:let's not forget the ambulance corps.

Waving a little flag. Support the 'Blue Star Moms'. I donate 500 decks of gently used cards from the casino. Granted. It's no skin off my nose. It doesn't cost me a cent. These Moms are concerned about their kids in the military. (Who wouldn't be?) Of all the charities that solicit for a donation of cards this is my favorite. More power to the Moms! They stand outside the big box stores with a want list. People BUY the goods and donate them on the way out. I love their diligence. It's a shame they have to pay postage. I'm not particularly patriotic but come on. They are Moms. Gotta love a Mom that stands in the sun begging for her kid. Happy Veterans Day.

Thanks to everyone who served and those currently serving.
The Navy naturally chose today to send my little brother on deployment. My poor SiL is naturally really stressed out, and my mom and I were doing ok until SiL sent pictures of my niece (22 months) and nephew (7 months) telling their daddy good bye. I'll be curled up on my couch with some ice cream now.

If you need tips and tricks for good deployment care packages, hit me up. I'm over on navyformoms and they have some really good advice. I hope the SIL is connected with the FRG and the ombudsman, they can truly help with info and support.
Free meal day at Texas Roadhouse, they really seemed to be happy to give us free food. And a free car wash at Supersonic. Whoo. Too bad we didn't need an oil change.
