Yet another n00b :)

Post by cosmic-honey » Thu Nov 07, 2013 5:41 pm

Hey all,
I'm Jocelyn. Born + raised in CA and currently residing in eastern North Dakota. 2014 will be my first burn! Like many virgins, I have wanted to go for years and a few months ago I finally did what I needed to do to make it happen- sold my car, paid off all of my old debt, and did all my reading to mentally prepare as much as possible for the next burn! My partner and I have been thinking about this adventure nonstop recently and have probably annoyed all of our non-burning friends and coworkers by now. It feels so good to be moving forward in writing this beautiful chapter with all of you!

Welcome to eplaya. Here is definitely a place where you can talk about Burning Man a lot - we get it :)

Congrats on having gotten things squared away - paying off debt is an accomplishment.

A small suggestion, if I may: stop watching Burning Man videos now. Stop looking at the galleries and oogling over how amazing it will be. Yes, read the first timers' guide; yes, read the survival guide (it's called that for a reason!); yes, read these forums for survival and comfort advice. But, if possible, try to stop forming expectations of what it's going to be like. You already know you want to go; let the experience happen as it will.

When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

Yeah, I'd stop reading, looking at, or watching any media concerning BM except info on how to be prepared.

Oh, and you might want to get another car. Maybe you can rent one, but otherwise it's quite nice to have your own transportation in case other means fall through.

I to have decided to join the burn in "14" (I hope:-), I don't have tons of festy experience but I got a good handful of yrs. I know nothing can compare but I'm sure the exp helps. Like making my first fest ever roo. Bad first choice but. Prepared me for all the others.

But anyways I just recently had m b day on the 9th and found myslef not being happy with who I'm. I mean I'm happy with what I got(family, kids, house) but not with who I'm. So i decided to make a year long attempt at a change and finish it off with Burning man. Obviously since iv been interduced into the festival world iv wanted to hit it up. But now I got that Burning urge for it. I'm deffinatly one who's been hitting the vids and sites about it and il heed ur advise to not.

But thanks for having me and il be here alot to learn what everyone has to teach. Ohh and sorry about my punctuation. Iv had a bad forum experience for that and almost made me write off forums for how they treated me. But i didn't :-)

Welcome.

Hey, if you can't trust us to pick on ya correctly, who can ya trust?

Honestly, I've never been to other festivals, and from what I've seen compared to Burning Man, I have zero interest. But I don't go for the music, I avoid the big sound camps completely ... the art, yes, assuredly, but mostly the people. The glorious people. Which ends up being eplayans!

Il trust everyone of ya.. I actually just got wife approved for burning man this yr. Time to start busting my ass with preparation. I know tics go sale real soon, but I seen on a movie an issue with tics in 2012 I think? So from the day they go on sale how hard is it to get a tic then?

Ticket sales are always a shifting landscape. There's more than one way to get a ticket, so just plan to go and keep up on when the sales are, which programs are open, deadlines. Third party is scary, but possible.

As i said earlier iv done some fest. Last two yrs electric forest and yr before roo. Each one of those times I had early bird if not loyalty the min they went on sale. So i have some experience with snagging em quick:-)

What's the best source BM website it's self.. I don't want third party.

Burning Man will probably continue the STEP (Secure Ticket Exchange Program) as in the past. People who got tickets but decide later they don't want to go tell Burning Man. Burning Man refunds their money (minus fees) and then offers those same tickets to the next people in line in the STEP. This is an officially-moderated channel and has had good, if nail-biting, results in the past.

More info on STEP here: https://ticketsupport.burningman.com/fo ... gram-STEP-

So there's no way to just pay straight out for one when they go on?

No. Too many people want to go. You can be on-line when they go, but there's no guarantee that you will get a ticket. Take the day off, if possible, and prepare to spend a few hours on line.

Yes, yes.... There is usually a Main Sale first. As mentioned above, they are still working on perfecting the system (since demand has grown so much), but last year they seemed to have found a good method. You first register as a potential buyer, and then you buy in an online frenzy. If you miss out in the Main Sale (or whatever it will be called), then you go to the alternatives like the STEP program.
All this will be explained on the web site.

Oh... and there is usually a "Christmas Sale" in December -- a few tickets at highly inflated prices.

It was something like $650 per ticket in the last Christmas Sale.

I got 2 tickets in July last year on a auction site, got them under "face" value (xmax tickets).
Supposedly then were even guaranteed.

I think there were 3,000 or 4,000 Christmas tickets at $650. A bit after New Year the regular tickets went on sale at $380.

The only benefit is the stress-free feeling of having a ticket in hand.

But people will fuck with you about VIP passes and such. Have fun with that.

All the 2013 ticket information is still on the web site. http://tickets.burningman.com/

Of course, you kind'a might have found that on your own -- but you have not learned about "radical self-reliance" yet.

Practically everything there is to know is on the web site. You have read the Survival Guide, right?....

Thanks for the tip! No more videos for me. My partner has a Jeep- planning on taking that to BRC. My old Honda would probably have broken down on the way there. We live in North Dakota :) There's a *small* possibility that I will buy a new car in the near future...but being debt free feels so good!
