ArtCar Camp

Post by EmilyD » Sun Feb 09, 2014 11:04 pm

ArtCar Camp has a big birthday in 2014. It's been 20 years since our camp founder Harrod Blank (http://harrodblank.com/burningman/index.html) brought one of the very first artcars to the Playa, "Oh My God":

and now...Black Rock City is filled with the most improbable, fantastical, creatively wonderful art vehicles on the planet.

ArtCar Camp celebrates the "Daily Driver" artcar vehicle. Unlike the fabulous "Mutant Vehicles" you see cruising the Playa, these cars bring art to the streets of the continent on a daily basis. They are still street legal vehicles but they're arted up permanently. We'll be displaying many of these Daily Drivers along the frontage of ArtCar Camp along with several "Original" mutant vehicles (like Pepper Mouser's "Motorized Living Room" which still roams the desert most years):

WE ARE FILLING UP and only have a couple of spaces left for people bringing artcars to join our camp this year.

Please contact: emily at artcarfest dot com if you have an artcar and wish to join ArtCar Camp in 2014.

I was loaned that VW bug, Oh My Gawd my first year on the playa and I broke down with it at the trash fence and pushed it most of the way back. It nearly killed me, but have fond memories of that first year and that car.

A message to wishful campers: Regretably, Art Cat Camp is full for 2014. But we hope you'll stop and check out our car lot, meet some of the artists, and maybe watch a movie. Look for the camp featuring some if the very first Art Cars to drive on the Playa. We'll be on the right side of Center Camp, on Rod's Road, just in from Esplanade near 5:30.

Hooray and congrats, and looking forward to seeing you guys on the playa again this year. Of course, I'm also looking forward to seeing all the mutant vehicle madness you and your campmates bring to the playa :)

Oh! You'll probably be our neighbors!

The lamplighting work vehicle Luci may look dull compared to your camp's creations, but hopefully we'll make it up with the on-foot performance art. Either way, can't wait to see you in the dust!
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.
