SKorea finds smuggled capsules contain human flesh
The customs office has discovered 35 smuggling attempts since August of about 17,450 capsules disguised as stamina boosters, and some people believe them to be a panacea for disease, the customs service said in a statement. The capsules of human flesh, however, contained bacteria and other harmful ingredients.
The smugglers told customs officials they believed the capsules were ordinary stamina boosters and did not know the ingredients or manufacturing process.

I find that nauseating, but I hardly find it shocking. An all metal rocking horse that I wouldn't have deemed safe for any kid anyway is just conspicuous consumption run rampant.
I would hope all their fans who are struggling to make ends meet will remember this before spending more money to support such a waste - but I realize they won't.

The good thing about the rocking horse is that it's solid gold, not gold-leaf. As long as it's solid it can be broken down & re-used. Think of it as a shiny survivalist toy...

I know gold is good for wiring, but I'm otherwise puzzled by its value for survivalists or as a hedge against economic collapse. In the event of a real disaster, is gold really going to be useful?

gold has historic, emotional, spiritual human interest. it has properties, which allow it to easily be identified. it does not rust or degrade, so is easy to store, and, is rare.catinthefunnyhat wrote:I know gold is good for wiring, but I'm otherwise puzzled by its value for survivalists or as a hedge against economic collapse. It has very little everyday use, true.
but, it works well as a "standard of trade", for the above reasons.

Re: WTF
For the most part, though, it's always going to be a luxury good, a status symbol. So, yeah, useful as a marker or abstraction of wealth, but only in a society with a functioning economy. It's ultimately a symbolic currency -- albeit one that outasts governments, nations, and even cultures -- so in the event of a real apocalypse, where event the wealthy are bartering for food and water, its desirability (hence its value) should plummet. Food, energy, water, shelter, problem-solving, time, tools, labour, and sex have real value. Gold is valuable only when these are sufficiently abundant and relatively easy to exchange, and it really only stands for the ability to obtain more of these things in the future (and looks pretty in the meantime).
If intelligent extra-terrestrials ever find us and decide we're worth interacting with, they'll be delighted at how willingly humans give up all of the above things in exchange for shiny, malleable, non-tarnishing substances. Deep down, humans are a race of sparkleponies.

(Which is why some of us fight so hard against it, I suppose.)
In bad times, symbols of wealth become, if anything, more important. I think you needn't look much futher than the Ur digs to see that despite the poverty of the many, the rich displayed wealth very opulently indeed. Although, I do admit that I am fond of grave goods. Whatever, the economy of Egypt would have collapsed if grave robbers hadn't kept gold in circulation.

It does seem like permanently-burying one's currency (when you can't just print more of it) is a poor strategy. Go go graverobbers!theCryptofishist wrote:Although, I do admit that I am fond of grave goods. Whatever, the economy of Egypt would have collapsed if grave robbers hadn't kept gold in circulation.
Anyways, I wanted to add that my comments above are meant more in a spirit of bewilderment than criticism... Regardless of its impracticality, as y'all have pointed out, gold has been given a high symbolic value by humans across nearly all cultures, times, and economies. Valuing gold is close to a human universal, and that, in a sense, makes it inherently valuable, I guess. It's just weird, is all.

Re: WTF
I've never much liked gold, but I've never much had a chance to work with it and wear it. Gemstones are also a bit outside my experience, although I do love some of the semi-precious ones. I think I became a whole lot more comfortable with adornment in my bead stringing phase, but that did nothing to convince me that gold was the way to do it.
I keep sort of hoping that this near earth asteroid mining might pan out and grant us enough gold so we get to wear it, not so little that we have to keep it in holes in the ground...

So apparently my brother, mom, and I are "suing apple".Own an iPod? Then you're suing Apple
If you're one of the millions who purchased an iPod between September 12, 2006, and March 31, 2009, you might be in for a surprising email from RealNetworks.
The company, which developed Real Player and the service Harmony, has officially enlisted iPod owners in a class-action lawsuit against Apple -- though you do have the right to recuse yourself.
