Re: PAGE TWO
The opposite approach would be better: visiting this thread should be part of the forum introduction process. This would not be to ruin or embitter peoples' impressions of the event, but to clue people in on the realities of the event and the people who attend it. After all, this whole thread is built on recognizing lack-of-self-awareness.trilobyte wrote:I disagree with the idea of hiding the page two thread, even for a single post. If something is so mean-spirited that you're afraid of the reaction of a new user who found the thread, it's probably too mean-spirited to even belong here. This is a good place to vent, and we've got a healthy disclaimer on the first post in the thread, but I think the transparency makes for accountability, and helps keep things in check.

I am, by the way, kidding when I say anything about a waiting period regarding reading or posting in this thread.
For two reasons:
* Newer people don't seem to venture into Open Discussion at first; it's too vast and strange and unspecific. This is why we so rarely get n00bs in the Bar Thread. Neophytes seem to aim first for the Introductory areas and areas of greatest immediate "need": tickets, rideshares, and Q&A.
* It's not always immediately obvious what this thread is about to the people who get lampooned in it, or they would have enough self-awareness not to provide grist for the mill.

Re: PAGE TWO
It seems the yearly classic free "miracle ticket" beggar threads that used to be the yearly classics have been replaced with the new yearly classic "I'm new and I need to join a camp" threads.
I remember when there didn't ever seem to be any threads like that. Now it's one after another.

Re: PAGE TWO
I'm actually really into " ideas of the personal being political, and vice versa," and issues of gender, sexuality and race, basically I kind social justice issues super interesting but I can't imagine a Burning Man Camp based on it being any fun at all. :-/
