Point taken. And I do try to be careful about the whole "evolutionary psychiatry" thing, because a lot of people seem to find in it the same thing there grandparents found in the bible. That being said, I think that there is possible light to be shed on human evolution by looking at relatives. Just be careful of solid conclusions.

no one

but in the present context of taking great logical leaps wrt primates and us I thought I would pre-emptively strike. It is the (united states of) american way after all.

absolutely. It can be a bit of a rorshach test, like the bible, without careful scrutiny. I think the best way to try and figure out what is 'natural' behavior for us is to study very primitive indigenous peoples. However, even in those cases the cultural differences can be staggering. Pretty impressive in it's own right though. Too bad there aren't very many left.

the eplaya is one place where not much of anything is disguised. Well, except for one's identity.

OK, somebody said to eat what your body is craving, so... Last night I was craving Pizza with lots of cheese. And I was looking in the fridge for things to throw on top of the pizza. It ended up with chopped portabello mushrooms, asparagus, brussel sprouts, black olives, fresh tomatoes and 3 kinds of cheese. It....was...heavenly....

Has anyone ever grown their own sprouts while they were out on the Playa? I thought a mini greenhouse for growing sprouts might be cool.
So the theme this year is like a giant camp out in the desert? With people bringing lots of shit from all over? uh.. -Marscrumbs

Further reading indicates that they advertise in much the same way as chimps.

However, a lot of primate speicies do hide ovulation as well as we do or don't advertise as prominently as chimps and bonobos. There is no easy corrolation between mating systems and prominance of ovulation advertising.

Do you have any advice for a first timer vegan -- what works best to bring for the week? Thanks!

Genius
Call 911 for the ambulance. Then lie down in a dark room with a washcloth on your forhead until they come.

First, I'd say think about bringing a cooler or two per person. (I freeze a lot of bottled water and then add sealed food items and ice around that.) I've had good luck with fresh veggies that keep if you wash them and that you can eat raw, like celery, carrots, radishes, etc. If you bring leafy salad greens, figure on eating them early and eat the more durable stuff later. I like the various tofurkey products, which give you all the protein you can stand and are ready anytime you are. Pre-packaged pressed tofu also worked well for me.

I found I didn't eat too much of the canned vegetables I brought, but the ones I did eat I set out in the afternoon sun and had hot. I also did that with some canned ready-to-eat things I got at the Asian grocery store.

One year I made some gourmet vegetarian Chinese soups for a crowd when the Post Office was a real camp and had big kitchen thing going. If you're able to manage soup, it is great on a cool playa night because you get both warmth and that all-important fluid. And if you use sea salt, you even replace some lost minerals enjoyably. (Sports drinks mostly don't do that well enough--too limited inventory of minerals.)

The advice to first-timers about the tendency to bring too much food bears repeating. One does seem to eat less when there is so much eye candy to consume.

I pack fresh for the first couple of days, then it's pretty much Tasty Bites, crackers, rice cakes, a couple of vegan power bars for sweet treat. I find food is pretty low on my priorities there, and I eat much less than any other time of the year, and would be sad to lose my Tasty Bites.

They make many vegan meals, and even more vegetarian with dairy. (Pretty good deals on website, free shipping, bulk discount...)

http://www.tastybite.com/

Climbers love them, too. Found this comment on a rock climbers blog:

"TastyBites Indian food (can eat straight out of pouch with no heating or adding water). It's not as good as fresh stuff obviously, but it's pretty awesome for camping/climbing palate. Think they were actually designed as MREs (meals ready to eat) for Indian military."
