Time for a Happy Thread

The ten year invasive camera came back clear. Good for another ten years. I'm happy.

We have our apartment. It's beautiful. We move in Saturday. I move my stuff Sunday. I got my rental truck for a great discount and am saving $200 on that. This week has been overwhelming and I have received bad news in regards to my health insurance but the one bright spot is that I will finally be in my own wonderful place with my family. I have lived on my own before, I have been married before, but this is truly the first time I have chosen a place because I want it not because of forced situations, the first time I will be living with someone who I truly love and respect and who returns that back, the first time I will be happily in a home creating the family I have always wanted. I will finally be living with my step-son and get to be a true mom to him not just a weekend visitor. My man will finally have the partner he deserves and we will be able to stop this long-distance bullshit that we have endured for 5 years. I have been so patient. We have collected, bought, and even sometimes made or refinished beautiful items and my man actually takes an interest in the decorating I've been doing and has great taste. I've been using pinterest as my interior decorating tool (http://pinterest.com/palefenix/). We've really created a beautiful home we can feel proud of. I feel like for the first time I have a true home of my own. I can't even express in words how absolutely ridiculously happy this makes me.

I own a vehicle again! After a long 8 months without one, I am once again mobile. Picked me up a little 2 door Honda Civic. GAH it feels great.

I'll be broke for a little while but whatever, finally 100% independent.
Also, I booked my flight back to California in August and reserved a rental truck to drive up to BRC from San Diego. Made everything a little more real after the ticket was booked. The excitement continues to build and the smile on my face gets wider and toothier .

Now to build my repertoire of illuminated wardrobe and get all the essentials before time for take off!

GOT THE GRANT! Still waiting for the official letter, but my name is posted on the funding website. This means I get to work this summer doing research, and will actually get paid for it! I jumped with joy when I found out.

Haha yah, it was from that whole confusing thing. Where I had to decide whether or not to tell my back-up employer that I was still waiting to hear about my primary job, and that I might not be able to take the job (A was the truth, and B was lying)....and I guess now I won't be working for them! Instead I'll be modeling eye diseases in zebrafish!

For the sake of clarity, I'll explain modeling diseases.

I modify a fish embryo, so that it develops the same eye disease as humans. That way I can study the disease and try to figure out what is causing it, without ever needing to work with humans.

My Dad was a marine biologist (in Quebec, mostly) and by the end of his career, he had accumulated alot of 'titles'. I don't know in what order they were, but all from Government of Canada, Fisheries and Oceans, including: 'Research Program Manager', Special Projects (Quebec); 'Special Scientific Advisor' (Marine Mammals), Resource Research Branch; 'Senior Policy Advisor' (Marine Mammals) and others. When he retired, they dedicated a Coast Guard boat to him, and gave it his name.
On another note, I'm allergic to fish.

My uncle did a lot of work for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. He never got his Ph.D. but family legend says that other people raided his work for theirs.
My family has odd legends.
(Of course I knew what modeling meant in that context--after my father models as well... I just like being a little out of place...)

They may not look similar, but the pathways underlying the eye development are very much the same between all vertebrates. The diseases I'm looking at are ones caused genetically, so you're missing a specific gene to make a protein needed for eye development. When you're missing the different essential proteins, the eye doesn't form properly and results in a lot of cases of childhood blindness. The problem though is that we don't fully understand how the development works, what order stuff happens with the different proteins. So first I'll be studying all the different proteins in the little fishies to find out which ones are messed up. Then we'll see if we can add in supplements or other things to try to make the eye form properly. The hope is that we can come up with what is needed, and that can be used as a prenatal supplement to prevent the blindness.

And fun fact: depending on what you're studying, researchers can use sea urchins, worms, frogs, zebrafish, chickens, mice, or dogs to study human diseases and development.

My Dad has an opportunity to rent a fabulous apartment with an Ocean view through his church and help with managing for the elderly tenants/parishiners for the nominal fee of Zip. He'll be able to walk to the beach everyday and spend more time with his church

But that's only half of good news..My brother and his family will be renting my dads house so whew..no moving 35 years of accumulated treasures andddd he gets an awesome large house with land he wouldn't otherwise afford. Yayyyyyy

On an intellectual level I understand that humans are not all that different from the other animals (I seem to recall reading that all living things on earth share something like 90% of the same genes), but it really takes something like this to put it in perspective. Sounds like a very cool job.

That's wonderful! Getting parents situated is so fraught with anxiety . . . and this news for your Dad is better than just okay, it's FABULOUS. You can't top having meaningful work, a nice place (with beach access!) and not having to sort 35 years of stuff. You really can't. I am so happy for you.
