Re: The Bar 2016 Edition
HI Sput! weekend, indeed!
I "invented" a drink some years ago, that I've enjoyed. Goathead even liked them, when I introduced them to him at Bruno's in Gerlach, some years ago.
I called it "the border crossing". Simple ingredients: a glass, ice, and equal measure of Gold tequila, and Yukon Jack liqueur.
The bartender, who's name I don't recall, took a photo for posterity, or evidence, not real sure.

All's well over here in the 'desert'! It's already getting hot. I expect a long, hot, dry summer... Hoping the fire season will be manageable.
How about you, how are things in the Sierras these days? I miss the Hof...

Glad things are well! Fire season here, and I'm sure, there, seems always a "crap shoot", depending on how stupid humans are. Ours seem to evolve from "oh, I thought it was still ok to burn brush", to "I was just mowing the grass and the steel blade hit this rock", to "it's a campfire, what could go wrong"... etc, etc.
Those Hof parties sure were fun! Maybe we can do it again one day! Seems most of the old gang here has scattered. sigh. Life changes.

Ah, here we are near the end of May. My absence is explained by my Mother passing away on the 21st of last month. We finally interred her ashes today alongside my Dad at the veterans cemetery here in Holly, MI. It was rough leading up to then from the last time I was in the bar and kind of rough since then.
Cheers to Mom!

HI Sput!
My sincere condolences for the loss of your mother.
In my business, I've dealt with this subject most of my life. So many stories.
One take away I've had, and I offer, is "there are no rules", take the time to grieve, and grieve as best works for you.

Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
Belated cheers to your mom! Sorry to hear about your mother's passing, and cheers to a new phase.
We've had a crazy last few days down in southern Nevada. Crossed into triple digit temps for the first time in 2025 mid-week. Locally we also had a big crazy situation when a car smashed into the cinder block fence at the side of our property. We're not at a high traffic corner or near a freeway ramp, so wasn't even a thing we considered could happen... but then kablammo. A teenager on a learner's permit, probably driving at over 80mph on an already-high-speed 45mph surface street was slow to react to a car entering traffic and swerved hard to avoid hitting the other car, and then smashed into our wall at full speed. An initial rush of anger gave way to being super grateful nobody was seriously hurt or killed. The kid's parents had gotten him a decent car with airbags, and he was shaken but not injured. Two pedestrians walking on the street narrowly missed getting hit and were also okay. Fortunately our back and side yard are at several feet higher elevation than the road they were traveling on, which kept the car from coming straight through and driving into our house and garage. The force of the blast shattered a big chunk of that wall and sent high speed concrete flying right through a gardening workstation that we've got set up for my partner. She had been doing some work there a little earlier, and it was sheer luck she wasn't there when it happened because it could have been quite serious. As it was, flying cinder blocks smashed a bunch of stuff at the side yard, and hit a piece of plastic pipe where our water line enters the house with such force that it destroyed the pipe and turned into a geyser until I got our water cut off at the street. Holes got punched into the exterior wall at a couple spots in the side of the house. Cops were quick to the scene to make sure medical attention wasn't needed, but it took a while for the team that fills out the accident report and gets witness statements and stuff, with temps pushing towards 100 farenheit. Good on the driver, he stuck around and registration/insurance information was obtained.
It's been a huge nuisance, but could have easily been really tragic. Aside from my partner's gardening, I use the side garden a lot when working on projects, and nobody ever expect the garden wall to explode
. We've got a good relationship with our plumber and they were able to get someone out within a couple hours, and had water service restored by dinner time. Our experience so far with the insurance company has been positive, they got the claim stuff started asap and got the driver's info, and they were able to get one of their people out to inspect and document the fence, yard and house. There's still a lot to do, but it's just stuff.
Weather-wise, it's been dry for the most part, but a couple decent storms at the beginning of the month broke rainfall records and by the 6th we were at the wettest May in the history of our metro area.

wow, Trilo! glad you're both ok! what a thing!
It's amazing, how some people survive their youth! Probably a good kid, "screwing off", which could have killed others or themselves in an instant.
I've certainly heard all the stories, in my business.
And of course, today, a salute to all those who gave their lives for the freedom and nation we live in.

And here we are a day away from the weekend. Hope you are all well. Just doing some gin and tonic tonight as it's nearly summer, and probably very much summer where some of you are.

Always funny to hear from a Burner, although 120F was pretty hard in 2017 or 2018! . . .

Glad you & Pani are okay, Trilo.
I'm sorry about your Mum, Sputnik. You mention the grieving being over but don't be hard on yourself when it creeps up sometimes. Some of it is predictable, but in my experience, some of it is non-linear.

Re: The 2025 Burning Man Bar is open
We usually get a bunch of days over 100, as well as over 110. And a handful that top 120 in the last couple, I see no reason we won't see a couple this year too. It's currently 101 (at 12:35), it's expected to go up a few more degrees later (peak temps are usually around 5 in summer, the convection effect of Mr. Sun heating up all the ground/concrete/asphalt). The pool sure was nice earlier, and will probably hop in again later.
Merlot is nice in the evening, but as it's mid-day I'm keeping it classy with a can of beer. Super classy, actually... got one of those yeti can cozy things, keeps a beverage fridge cold even outdoors on the surface of the sun.
*points to cooler full of ice* help yourselves to a cold drink, gotta keep cool and stay hydrated (or beerdrated as the case may be) on a hot day.

yeah wow, that Vegas weather.... One of the great inventions for humans, has been refrigeration. Imagine a world without it. People would be clustered in "temperate" zones, and or migratory. Staying warm, can be very low tech, but staying cool, not so much.

Hopefully the tests go well, and glad to hear things are better post-op.
Huzzah for the wall contractors we hired. Friendly and great communications, know their stuff, and have been on-time or early every day. The old wall was out in a day, and they've already made great progress on the new wall. Bonus points for me being able to get in there after they left with a Sawzall and trim back a bunch of the damned oleander that grows along the outside wall.
Back in the 1980's when the house was built, oleander was apparently a popular choice for planting because it grew fast and got thick.... but the stupid stuff is poisonous to cats, dogs and humans and is just about impossible to kill. It grows fast, too, and if left unchecked the branches get so thick you need a sawzall or chainsaw to get through them. *shakes fist*
That G&T looks refreshing. Making a run to the market later, and hoping for a few bunches of mint on offer for mojitos (we have some growing in the garden, but it's only recently planted and I can't grab any of it for drinks yet).

Re: The Bar 2016 Edition
it's so nice to have communications with workers. I rarely hire any for anything (obsessive DIYer), but, when I do, it's nice to hear how things are going. Also, when I do work for others on monuments, I create an email thread and advise them and or send photos, as I start and progress through the project. It's not very hard to do, but sure helps people feel informed and part of the process.
I was gifted a bottle of "Camus" XO cognac the other day. Sounds like a nice one, I'm hoping to try it soon.
Also, I found some great pruning blades for a sawzall.

Peeks in,
Wow, nice to see everyone after a long time. Sputnik, we've never met; however, so sorry about your loss. I've been offline as My mother passed in Jan. Not sure how I get along each day. Hoping to get back to whatever I need to do. Glad to see *smiling* faces and hope everyone going this year got their tickets. I'm planning to go next year.
Drinks all around tonight,
