If you're interested in translucent material for wings, Angelina Film is UH-MA-ZING. I've used it for fairy wings of my own, and the end result is so beautiful. It's very similar to working with cellophane. (It's also called Fantasy Film, if you're interested in shopping around for different prices.)wandergirl wrote:also I love the idea of translucent panels in the beetle wings, especially if the EL wire reflected off it. omg so many projects. thanks everyone!

I really like the first outfit especially, TG. The standing collar is elongating for the neck, and rather elegant. (I should admit that I have a bias towards them).
A ruff is neat, and certainly less common, but it looks a little stifling.

Yes I am pretty damn special
but then so again so are my kids...
Still working on it though. Just need to hem it. These coats get so heavy after the satin lining goes on that their just hard to maneuver around the machine.
I also made a big lined furry blanket. I think I shall call it the "sexy time blanket" just because it feels so sensual...
I am going to try and post pics here this weekend.

tg,
that collar did look very frustrating to make...and it probably would've been itchy out on the playa. can't wait to see the costume, you'll look adorable!

what one? the stand up or the ruff? I am still going to make the ruff. It is lined in the inside with cotton so I dont think it should be to bad for one night.

the reason i asked fishy is cause i dont think the high collar would have been itchy but the ruff looks like it would be. So was not sure what one.

I meant the ruff. It just looks complicated to make (getting all the loops even and all) but having a cotton liner and wearing it at night will probably help with the itchy factor.

That is what I have been trying to figure out, the best way to get it there. wondering if i can just place it on the outside of a bag or something. If not I guess a little box? not sure but have been giving thought to it. any input?

I think a box would be best. If you can find one that fits it just right or you could wear it on your trip out here
Can you precut the materials and assemble it on the playa? Is it machine or hand sewn?

Hand sewn. Yeah, humm. Maybe it would be a good option to just sew it out there. Hell it will be hot so just sit in the shade and sew. Not a bad idea

All projects planned for the playa dissappear in the dust. You can make your own box.

It seems like you could compress the ruff like an accordion somehow and then pack it into a small, tight package to fit in your bag. Then again...why not wear it on the plane?tattoogoddess wrote:That is what I have been trying to figure out, the best way to get it there. wondering if i can just place it on the outside of a bag or something. ARGH!!! A huge step backwards on my big costume project. What seemed to fit perfectly two days ago, now does not. Entire armature situation needs to be redesigned. I usually have a lucky day on Friday the 13th, sigh!

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
does anyone have any experience/tips for sewing vinyl? So far what I've found is: use tissue paper so it doesn't stick to the machine, use a looser tension on the stitch.
Also I bought jersey ballpoint needles in 10/12/14 sizes. Any idea if these would be good to use? Thanks a million in advance!!

Misa blue, Don't think that way. Decide what style you would like to dress-up in. It will happen. You have stuff in your closet that can be accessorized, cut up, re-made into something you'll love. Take a look at the re-designed outfits on this costume board. It doesn't require time, money or anything fancy. Just an idea. (Well, maybe a tiny bit of time.)

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
When I worked in a window shade factory the sewing machines were set up with standard point needles, size 14 iirc. The ballpoints are designed for knits and will likely do more damage to the vinyl than a sharp. tension would depend on how heavy the vinyl is.lazerfox wrote:does anyone have any experience/tips for sewing vinyl? We never needed tissue paper and basically sewed vinyl the same way we sewed any fabric. Since it can't be pinned without permanent damage the pieces to be sewn were positioned with 2 face tape.
Hope that helps.
