YES! Anything is better than the election candidates robo-calling. I'm on both the state and national 'do not call' lists for telemarketers, and the candidates are selling THEMSELVES. These fools got exempted early in the no-call legal game, so we have to put up with their untimely interruptions. Fine, I still hang up on them.ygmir wrote:*bump*, 'cause, well, it's better than election cycle politics.

Re: Cascadia
He who doesn't remember history.....they tend to relive it.
It was already proposed once, and actually was scheduled to be introduced on the floor of the U.S. Congress, on Dec. 8, 1941. The state of Jefferson, remember?
Their timing was off just a tad. The US had bigger things to worry about beginning on Dec. 7. Just sayin'.....
Those of us who remember history, especially the Civil War, we tend to reenact it.

Re: Cascadia
According to Wikipedia:
The recent movement for statehood started on September 3, 2013, when the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors voted 4–1 in favor of withdrawal from California to form a proposed state named Jefferson. The proposal was joined by the Modoc County Board of Supervisors (September 24) and Glenn County Board of Supervisors (January 21, 2014). On April 15, 2014 Yuba County supervisors joined the State of Jefferson movement to separate from California and create a new state of Jefferson. On July 15, 2014 The Tehama County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to adopt a resolution supporting the declaration of withdrawal from California based on an advisory vote taken on June 6, 2014 where the public voted 56% to 44% in favor of splitting the state. On July 22, 2014 the Board of Supervisors of Sutter County unanimously adopted a resolution supporting a declaration and petition to the Legislature to withdraw from California to redress a lack of representation. On March 3, 2015, Lake County supervisors voted 3-2 to submit the question of secession to voters and on March 17, Lassen County supervisors made a similar declaration that also has the voters deciding in 2016. The Jefferson Declaration Committee is reportedly aiming to get at least 12 counties in support.
On October 24, 2014, Modoc and Siskiyou Counties delivered their declarations for independence from the state of California to the California Secretary of State's office. On January 15, 2015, three more counties, Glenn, Tehama, and Yuba Counties submitted their official declarations as well.
The current revival is based almost entirely in California. Although some individual residents in Oregon have lobbied for the movement, no county government in that state has endorsed the proposal to date. As of October, 2015, 11 Northern Counties have sent a declaration or have approved to send a declaration to the State of California with their intent of leaving the State and forming the State of Jefferson.

the state of Jefferson, would only be a part of Cascadia. (depending on the map you use, but for our conversation it does)
Cascadia, the nation, only exists in the minds of dreamers and altruists.
But please, feel free to google and drive off topic with civil war and star trek references.

Re: Cascadia
On that note.... I can mention that the Jefferson movement has taken a downturn.
A year or two ago here in Lake County, the Board of Supervisors voted in favor of joining the Jefferson movement. Then the worst wildfire in history hit us, and the State of California benefited us tremendously. So now the Board has reversed their stance. The same has happened in at least one other poor county.
Of course, that won't stop us from scheming and plotting to create Cascadia. Buwahahahahah.

Re: Cascadia
I encountered two fellows here locally at the CVS pharmacy door, getting signatures and distributing information on "the State of Jefferson" and felt it very much alive. This was two days ago. I told them I favor the nation of Cascadia, and got blank stares...........

Re: Cascadia
Some of the very early State of Jefferson proponents wanted a state free of African Americans. Some of the bad things they did, laws passed, and including an active KKK, prohibited and discouraged African Americans from moving to Oregon, resulting in a very low African American population to this day.
This whole Sagebrush Rebellion revival is a reaction to the changing economy in rural counties. We are praying everyone will chill out and go home so we can work out among ourselves the path forward for rural areas. Personally I think the rainy West and the high desert can work together and not be critical of one another. But retirees who move here and are "f taxes for schools because we don't need them" are unwelcome.

Re: Cascadia
what does that have to do, at all, with our conversation here related to Cascadia? Other than to interject some historical opportunity to make people feel guilty (or try to)? Or is it to place blame, point fingers, at some other wrong?some seeing eye wrote:Some of the very early State of Jefferson proponents wanted a state free of African Americans. Re: Cascadia
We have two different things, a proposed modern state of Jefferson and a water-rich coast and valley bioregion state, a'la ecotopia. I believe both are flawed. I believe State of Jefferson proponents need a deep dive into history. I don't believe in guilt. We need to start from the fact that state boundaries are immutable in our lifetime. Where do we go from there?

Re: Cascadia
There was a war nearly fought in 1860 in Puget Sound on San Juan Island. A pig had escaped confinement on one side of the island populated by the British-owned Hudson' Bay company. The pig made it over to the other side of the island where new American settlers had landed, and it tore through one garden before it was shot. The Americans got help from a US Army infantry company led by Captain George Pickett (4 years later to become much better known as the leader of the ill-fated charge at Gettysburg which bears his name, only then George Pickett was a General for the Confederates). About 60 men landed on the island.
The British showed up with warships offshore, and landed Royal Marines. Both sides faced off against each other, until cooler heads prevailed, and both sides realized that they both had been given orders not to shoot first. What became know to us today as the "Pig War" ended not with a bang, but a whimper. International arbitration gave the island to the US in 1877.
An interesting case study. Does any element apply here?
