There was a company in Ireland a few years ago, High Andes, that had a prototype DJ mixer for kids at CES. It could also mix visuals. It had auto mix - stretching tracks and syncing.

Kids are smart and fully capable of DJing, as for adult DJs, no comment.

BM is better than most 'festivals' or 'deny being festivals' at socializing participants to not drop or leave trash. We could do much better. But in the larger EDM context people are discussing http://www.youredm.com/2015/07/02/havin ... s-expense/.

I won't link to you know who's website, but there appears to have been a bit of a culling of sound camps this year.

Jesus Christ, I hope y'all are happy now. All of this bitching and moaning on ePlaya really paid off, huh?

So all the big sound camps are banned? No Roots Society, no Osiris, no Dancetronauts, no Digital Apex. No more fun...

I should just sell my ticket and go to Coachella. Might as well cancel the event altogether.

Honestly, if the Big Sound Camps are the only reason you come, that's a reasonable thought. Seriously. There are plenty of events on the "Circuit" that are just about music and dancing, and the Electric Daisy Festival and Coachella will even give you people dressed like Burners - and some of the art. No dust, less danger, easier to get back to the hotel and shower ... everything good about 2 & 10 without the 'negatives' of the playa.

For some of the rest of us though, it will be a nice reminder that the majority of the city doesn't exist at 2 & 10, and that there are incredible camps all over the playa to visit. And there will still be huge sound there, it will just be someone different.

As for:

They weren't banned. They weren't placed, which is totally different (and the Dancetronauts were denied a DMV permit, due to multiple violations over two years that they chose not to do anything about). They could still show up, create a kick-ass small camp on the backstreets after Gate opens, and show everyone that they're about Burning Man, not just themselves. Of course, they'd also lose the ego-stroking hand-job of people worshiping them, and we'd see how many "big name" DJs were really doing it for the love of spinning, not just their own egos. I know multiple camps that have been either not placed, or moved to places that seem like suck at first. The general response from them is "fuckit, we're bringing the best camp ever", not long whiny posts on the Fox News of Burning Man sites about how they were screwed and not given what they "deserve".

and OT never planned to bring their sound stage this year. Their party plan is going mobile - to other stages and out to art installations.
Their 125 person  support camp didn't get placed.

Placement has stated there is a higher bar each year for interactivity.
If this is the start of Placement holding large sound camps responsible for the MOOP of their audience, A-OK.
It will also be interesting to see how large mobile dance MV's are affected by the BLM comments.

Grai and I were having this conversation last night. It seems a lot of the BLM safety concerns revolved around the "raver" culture in terms of open playa shitting and drug use. This could be a way of convincing them that the Org is committed to keeping this a non-commercial Art Festival and not a Music Festival.

However, in the case of OT, they didn't just ask for support camp placement, they asked for support camp placement at like 9:50 and A. It sounds like they wanted their prime placement on legacy only with no interactivity. Probably should have asked for a more suburban location.

Yestereve on the bookface I said:

"I'm really not calling anyone out with what I'm about to say.
If you think EDM camp _______ not being a big focus of BRC is an issue, then...
Maybe you you should just go to Electric Daisy Carnival and not worry about Radical Self Reliance.
Just sayin. (That you might be going to the wrong event)"

And I stand by it. Eric nailed it:
Eric wrote:For some of the rest of us though, it will be a nice reminder that the majority of the city doesn't exist at 2 & 10, and that there are incredible camps all over the playa to visit. And there will still be huge sound there, it will just be someone different.

Add to that, my reading is also that BLM and LEO are tired of providing minor first aid to "mobile rave" participants.

I am not familiar with Playa Restoration operations. But the larger concentration of burners, especially dance festival-seeking virgins, in one place, the more potential MOOP.

After Playa Restoration moves through the city and likely the Man and Temple environs in line sweeps, how are they supposed to/do they find every place a "mobile rave" stopped? I believe the BLM picks some random mid and deep playa spots in their MOOP audit. They could easily randomly pick a "mobile rave" moop zone.

Somehow I'm imagining the "mobile rave" MV's like the Dancetronauts as their space shuttle train engine, towing their speaker / stage, towing a wheeled bank of portos, towing a first aid barge, towing a bank of lights for de-mooping, towing a garbage barge...

aaaand a totally different tangent, but an EDM camp has released their lineup for Burning Man way ahead of time yet again. Last year it was White Ocean, this year it's Mayan Warrior http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=30450

Complete with slightly deaf response

Wasn't BMOrg specifically asking music camps not to do this after last year's debacle?

VC, I had the same thoughts when I read those posts about several sound camps not being placed - the BLM concerns over raver culture resulting in fewer sound camps (at least placed ones). Then there is also the new tax, though I am not sure if reducing the number of sound camps could get BM out of paying that tax.

Zealous, I recall reading that request not to post set times/locations as well.

A friend of mine, someone who has been burning longer than me, once told me that a certain, very well known, DJ/producer would never post times/dates regarding performances on the playa - in the spirit of immediacy. Ever since I heard that story, true or not, I have had a lot more respect for DJs that take that approach on the playa. I like the idea of DJ as participant and crowd as co-creators of the experience, rather than the rockstar-DJ attitude (which I think is more common now than it was in the 90's). I'd much rather walk around and stumble upon music that I like and be pleasantly surprised, than plan my day around getting to that one superstar DJ.

I said this elsewhere in a thread that seemed to have vanished:

1. Raver inside of me goes: wow, nice names!

2. Burner inside of me says: Not this bullshit again... there's more to Burning Man than sound camps. I don't get why these camps, even if they are bringing massive cool things (and the Mayan Warrior is definitely both massive and cool) feel like they can have special treatment. Same with OT feeling like they should get placed on prime real estate for a massive camp that has minor events (if anything) based on legacy.

At the same time, though... on the legacy thing... I know many camps and cars do operate almost entirely their legacy status, including some big well-known non-sound camps. So... how far does legacy stretch? I don't know. Thinking out loud.

They took the posts down; everyone can relax. I'm sure it was an honest mistake. Perhaps BMorg should do a better job of communicating to sound cars and theme camps that posting lineups so far in advance is considered uncouth.
