One Item for BM a Day (2010-2012)

My only job every day is consisting of finding a new one in this small little town. I miss eplaya but I can't get to BRC without income. First time I have been unemployed since I started working as a kid. I'm being kinda hard on myself. I'll be back to posting daily again soon citizens...

Baby wipes - I know not exciting, but Costco had a coupon for them this month. It's the first thing I have bought this year. I have been putting off buying anything until after the house remodel is done. Should only be two more weeks!

I am "guardedly optimistic" -- with a 25 foot double-decker trailer behind it.

Piano #4 came home today. It turned out to be a dainty spinet, so it is a candidate for pedal-power.

Going this weekend to look at Bamboo for 'big ass pan flute'
I might have to wait a few weeks tell more landscape decorating materials come into town. The material suppliers will start to bring in more of that stuff as summer comes around.

...bought a sackload of old parachute pieces from an army surplus store, now I've got a few hundred hours of sewing to make a massive shade/dust cover for our camp.

I'm going to try and cover a dome shape camp - about 18 feet high by a 50 foot diameter.

starting to slowly buy some more gear for the burn this year as I find deals on stuff a couple of weeks ago I picked up some super clearance coleman led fold down lanterns for $5 each at target... got a new 5 day cooler on clearance at sears.... today I got a brand new coleman roadtrip grill from some guy on craigslist for less than half of retail and I've never seen em go on a good sale so I jumped on this and just got back home with it. I did a community meal plan last year and I just didn't like it for various reasons... this year I'll definitely be bringing much more food that i like for myself cuz if I don't get enough to eat or the food that I like to eat I get low on energy and really cranky

I've got goggles on my mind. Just ordered four different styles for me and hubby to try on. I made sure we could return any that don't work. I'll report on the outcome. One of the batch is this style:

Mine are quite a bit like the ones you linked to, and they're VERY comfortable. Haven't been Playa-tested yet, and I may have to put electrical tape over the vents, but so far, so good.

Being new, I decided to jump in :)

In the last few days here is what I have done:

* arranged for my daughter (13) to be with grandma for the week
* got daughters permission to go to Burning Man. Had an awesome discussion with her about it and why I want to go, etc. Although I told her she can't go til she is 16 (my rule), she says that she wants to make little gifts for people. Such the creative giving teen she is!
* applied for my disabled car permit (on advice of a vetern burner...thank you!) and started planning that
* had an awesome conversation with a vetern burner and decided to join their camp! yippee
* made lists and spreadsheets of what I need (yes, i know, planner type person!LOL)

I can't believe that you are not letting your daughter stay home and have lots of friends over while you're at BM. The ultimate 13 y.o. house party while parents are at BM whould be awesome.

I would have LOVED to have heard the discussion about going to BM with your 13 year old. Please share a few highlights of that talk. (PLEASE)

I think BM is great for teens, but you may want to see what things are all about before promising that she can go. What are some of the gift type things she wants to make?

I have always been the type of parent to have open and honest discussions with her. She is a pretty well rounded and open minded thinker herself. I have heard that BM is great for teens, but, I also want her to grow up a tad first. And, for this time, I want to be able to enjoy myself instead of worrying about her.

A few highlights of our discussion included going to the website together, reading about it, looking at some pictures, etc. Her first reaction was" mom, you are NOT creative, you are a planner, so how are YOU going to contribute any art." Which prompted a discussion of how everyone can contribute in different ways, etc. Discussed how she thought it would be "so epic" to be able to just go play for a week and do whatever you want and not worry about money. There was much more to the conversation as well, but I dont want to bore anyone. Feel free to PM or email me and I can share more privately if you like.

As far as gifts, we havent decided yet. But, I think she is thinking bracelets or necklaces, etc. Although she did tell me there will be "requirements" as to who I can give them to and I must give her pictures. haha Only knows what she is thinking.

I'm using hotfix crystals--the Bejeweler tool heats up the crystal and melts the glue, which is strong enough to stay on through a washer & dryer cycle (175Â°). I shook the crinoline, and nothing came off. With the goggles, I banged them hard on the counter a dozen times or so, and everything stayed put. So, it SHOULD work--or I'll be picking up a lot of crystals.

I've also heard that silicone is a good adhesive for the Playa.

Sounds like progress! IMHO, planning a trip obsessively is half the fun.

You can also so great things with 3D fabric paint; it comes in glitter, metallic and crystal. A lot of it ends up in my art as adhesive.

Hello Plumeria; welcome aboard!

I see nothing wrong with bringing a 13 year old to Burning Man -- PROVIDED that child and parent are capable of discussing openly and frankly any "weirdness" that may need explaining. Kids adapt quickly to new things, and they tend to follow their parents' clues. So if you are calm about seing the occasional naked man, and you can explain to your kid that Burning Man is one of the few occations in life where normal-modesty-is-suspended-and-it-is-OK, then your daughter will be perfectly fine.

Along that vein, I suggest you also avoid talking in the euphemisms that grown-ups sometimes use. So instead of saying "No, we are not going there, because that is an adult camp", you say "No, we are not going there, because that is a weird-sex camp." Such frankness can be difficult for any of us, but Burning Man is exactly the place to get used to it. Again, the youngster will learn that such things CAN be talked about, which will probably be a great relief to any teen, and she might one day -- months or years later -- ask you some "Burning Man type of questions". Millions of parents would give their left arm for such a deep communication channel with their children. Burning Man is a perfect occasion to break thru the usual taboo-riddled relationship between the generations.

Wow. Did I just write all that? Sunday was yesterday! Oh well -- think of it as a sermon anyway.

Oh, about artistic talent, and about gifts.
Your daughter could be right that you are not "the creative type", but you may both be surprised at what artistic abilities you have never used. The definition of "art" is extremely broad at Burning Man. You are not expected to bring or perform any classical "fine art". Perhaps you wind up building a fanciful or clever shade structure after your own head. That's art. Perhaps you wind up singing along with somebody. That's art.
And as for gifts; while it is not wrong to give a necklace, the best gifts are the ones where you give of yourself -- your time, talent, or simply a helping hand with setting up your neighbor's tent. If you and/or your daughter can play a musical instrument, and/or sing, you will be Heroes Of Burning Man. You just walk right up to any group of people and play them a song. That's Burning Man.

Ahhhh yes the goggle bang test! HA! I second that comment about silicone. We artcar folks use it to stick things onto our vehicles. It never gets brittle and holds up in extreme heat and cold as well as wet and dry conditions. You can break it down with rubbing alcohol if you need to but it's impossible to get off clothing if its dry (except if ridges are sticking out you can pull them off.) It's GREAT stuff, not expensive, and flexible.
