Institutional memory may be encouraged to preserve a group's ideology
or way of work. Conversely, institutional memory may be ingrained to the
point that it becomes hard to challenge if something is found to contradict
that which was previously thought to have been correct.

Habitat (which is Latin for "it inhabits") is the place where a particular
species live and grow. It is essentially the environment—at least the
physical environment—that surrounds (influences and is utilized by) a
species population.

We use "species population" instead of "organism" here because, while it
is possible to describe the habitat of a single black bear, we generally
mean not any particular or individual bear, but the grouping of bears that
comprise a breeding population and occupy a certain geographical area.

However, the term "habitat" can be used more broadly in ecology. It was
originally defined as the physical conditions that surround a species, or
species population, or assemblage of species, or community (Clements
and Shelford, 1939). Thus, it is not just a species population that has a
habitat, but an assemblage of many species, living together in the same
place that essentially share a habitat. Ecologists would regard the habitat
shared by many species to be a biotope.

Biotope is a loanword into English from the German "Biotop", which was in
turn derived from the Greek bios='life or organism' and topos='place'.
(The related word geotope has come into English by the same route, from
German "Geotop".) So biotope is literally an area where life is living. More
precisely, biotope is an area of uniform environmental conditions
providing living place for a specific assemblage of plants and animals.

A mood is a relatively lasting emotional or affective state. Moods differ
from emotions in that they are less specific, often less intense, less likely
to be triggered by a particular stimulus or event, and longer lasting.
Moods generally have either a positive or negative Valence effect. In other words, people often speak of being in a good or bad mood. Unlike
acute, emotional feelings like fear and surprise, moods generally last for hours or days. Mood also differs from temperament or personality traits
which are even more general and long lasting. However, personality traits (e.g. Optimism, Neuroticism) tend to predispose certain types of moods.
Mood is an internal, subjective state, but it often can be inferred from posture and other observable behaviors.

perception is the process of acquiring, interpreting, selecting, and
organizing sensory information. The word perception comes from the
Latin perception-, percepio, , meaning "receiving, collecting, action of
taking possession, apprehension with the mind or senses."

Image

Many cognitive psychologists hold that, as we move about in the world,
we create a model of how the world works.

Image

That is, we sense the objective world, but our sensations map to percepts,
and these percepts are provisional, in the same sense that scientific
hypotheses are provisional (cf. in the scientific method). As we acquire
new information, our percepts shift, thus solidifying the idea that
perception is a matter of belief. Abraham Pais' biography refers to
the 'esemplastic' nature of imagination.

Image

es·em·plas·tic
–adjective
having the ability to shape diverse elements or concepts into a unified
whole: the esemplastic power of a great mind to simplify the difficult.

Image

In the case of visual perception, some people can actually see the
percept shift in their mind's eye. Others who are not picture thinkers, may
not necessarily perceive the 'shape-shifting' as their world changes.
The 'esemplastic' nature has been shown by experiment: an ambiguous
image has multiple interpretations on the perceptual level.

ODE TO THE CITIES OF ALGEBRA

Image

Algebra is a branch of mathematics concerning the study of structure,
relation and quantity.

The name is derived from the treatise written by the Persian

Together with geometry, analysis, combinatorics, and number theory,
algebra is one of the main branches of mathematics. Elementary algebra
is often part of the curriculum in secondary education and provides an
introduction to the basic ideas of algebra, including effects of adding and
multiplying numbers, the concept of variables, definition of polynomials,
along with factorization and determining their roots.

Image

Algebra is much broader than elementary algebra and can be
generalized. In addition to working directly with numbers, algebra covers
working with symbols, variables, and set elements. Addition and
multiplication are viewed as general operations, and their precise
definitions lead to structures such as groups, rings and fields.

Image

Elementary algebra is the most basic form of algebra. It is taught to
students who are presumed to have no knowledge of mathematics
beyond the basic principles of arithmetic.

It allows the general formulation of arithmetical laws (such as a + b = b +
a for all a and b), and thus is the first step to a systematic exploration of
the properties of the real number system.

Image

It allows the reference to "unknown" numbers, the formulation of
equations and the study of how to solve these (for instance, "Find a
number x such that 3x + 1 = 10").

Image

It allows the formulation of functional relationships (such as "If you sell x
tickets, then your profit will be 3x - 10 dollars, or f(x) = 3x - 10, where f
is the function, and x is the number the function is performed on.").
