Maybe the rumor was started to deter tourists and weekenders. I agree with “prepare for the worst and hope for the best”. Nothing will stop me from being there. I was not there in 01 but everyone I know who was there said the weather was pretty bad but nothing they wouldn’t go through again for a good burn. It brought a new level of comradery to BRC that year.

Yeah, I hear that those snakes are bigger than an anaconda and nastier than a hot buttered hedghog.

Okay, here's the official word:

This year's playa is exactly like last year, only different. There are sun, wind, dust, heat, darkness, and cold ... just like last year. This year we have changed twiddled the knobs a bit so the amplitude and order of appearance of some of these effects will be somewhat random as to create the chaotic environment we know as burning man.

Please enjoy this year's weather show. We have worked very hard to bring you this experiance. In the event we should decide to crank the wind knob to 11 for a while, applause would be appreciated.

Please ignore any pre-event reports as we are undertaking various tweaks of the system and testing things to make sure they are operational.

Thank you,

BRC Environmental Projection Agency

I've heard more people, more different people, say "Dusty as hell" for longer than the Seattle-Vancouver people saying "You've been hoaxed."

It's better to be over-prepared than turned into human ludefisk. If anyone comes up and sneers, "Ha! Ha! Ha! You came prepared for dust! You're a dupe!" tell 'em to buzz off and dry up Image

OK, here is something I sent out to my local group a couple of hours ago:
Note: B is out there helping with a major art project.

Just got off the phone with B, she was out in Empire so this report is today,
8/17/06. Today is good, hotter than hell (remember she is toting hunks of steel around) but little wind.

However, she described yesterday as her third worse day on the Playa. Dust and wind and more dust and wind. She lost two grommets on her shade shelter yesterday and they only got it covered after they moved the truck to make a windbreak. The roads are rock hard and bumpy and the surface is potato chips with potato chips underneath. (my comment) There are only 200 people out there now but when we all show up those chips will become powder.

B's recommendations: Prep for dust and bring long tent stakes.

She is doing fine and the work is going well.

Wind scorpions are bad this year
I have seen these they hatch from an egg in the thousands when the temperature is just right and the wind is up about 50 mph. They do this as a survival instinct so they can spread across the desert (you don’t think the walk across the desert do you?) they are about an inch long the come at you like locus in the wind. Sting like a very VERY BIG WASP.

Fucking wind scorpions
