The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Not as much for the movie itself but the way people watch it in a theater. No one is a spectator you yell at the screen and interact with the other people there dess up and act out the movie. If you just watch the movie its no fun. Jut like burning man you get out what you put in. Plus a lot of the costumes could have come right off the playa.

A better way of saying it might be "A lot of costumes on the playa were taken from Rocky Horror Picture Show"

Flying Circus

Post by Fluffy Pink » Mon Nov 03, 2003 2:52 pm

I recently watched some Monty Python Flying Circus episodes and it took me back. . .My favorite sketch is "Spot the Loony" which was filled with a parade of Playa-esque players.

towering inferno.

also, an after-school special (not too sure about the title) in which a young girl has some tough decisions to make when her friends begin to experiment with sex and drugs, but hey that's okay because her parents love her and will always be there for her no-matter-what.

did anyone else see that? major tear-jerker...

Finally....those NetFlix offers might be worth looking into. I haven't seen half of these movies and Tank Girl sounds interesting.

Not a Movie...

Post by maxwells » Thu Nov 06, 2003 12:26 pm

On the recommendation of a friend, I watched Carnivale on HBO. It has reminder me & the spouse tremendously of Black Rock City. From the dust, to the freaks, to the lounging all day, waiting for the night’s action. Check it out.

It seems very creepy & surreal… I have yet to watch them all.

Not a movie, i know, but come on. Dust, freaks, traveling performers living out of tents & makeshift trailers?
I like you....

I love Carnivale. We record it here. I can most diffently see how it could remind you of BM.

Too Wong Foo also makes me think of BM. Just imagine Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Legerizim(sp ) in the drag race.

At the end, L.D.'s character writes an e-mail from a Net-cafe that floored me...I was totaly NOT expecting to be zapped into "playa state" but there I was with tears in my eyes wanting to be home.

*sigh*

'04...here I come, baby!
Someone else got to it before I did. I just watched this movie for the third time a couple nights ago and I realized how much it reminded me of Burning Man.

Cool movie.

"The Muppet Movie"

The lovely tale of an earnest young frog who knows there's something more out there than the tiny swamp he grew up in, and finds a host of crazy characters that become his family on the way.

Extra points for featuring the first muppet art car, an evil fast food chain, Animal dosing himself to gigantism, and Crazy Harry blowing stuff up because it's fun.

Plus, all the Muppets look like Burners I know.

 Cyborg is the name of the film. Poor rich guy, caught in B Series film, ne way.

The Mystery Men! A whole lot of the basis of my camp is stolen directly from it. And it's hilarious.

"Russian Ark"

Anyone seen it? One long continuous shot (90 minutes), while walking through the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, through many time periods of Russian history. It's fantastic.

"Out"

I liked this.

Chanced on it last week on the "Colours" channel (satellite). Do not know if it is coming back on. If it does I'll warn you here, eh. May be difficult to purchase/rent/find. Not what you might think by the title. A surrealistic (?!) journey to "now" (heaven) is how i'd describe it. With surreal being every-other-moment-than where it ends. Your interpretation will likely vary from mine. There is no explaining or apparent plot-line.

Again, i liked it a lot, but it is definately not for everyone so I cannot recommend you buy it before seeing, though I will buy when I find it.

I just found an "Out" aka (also known as) "Deadly Drifter" review at:

http://www.fakes.net/deadlydrifter.htm

Second name googled for buying. "Out" did not so easily. I do not like the "Deadly Drifter" name as well. Boo-hoo. Talk to the hand!

Peter Pan

Post by KellY » Fri Jan 02, 2004 2:18 pm

Go see it, right now. My wife and I just caught it yesterday and were totally blown away. Easily the most magical film I've seen in years, and that includes Lord of the Rings. A completely different animal then the sacharrine Disney version or the musical. Peter is the most fun, creepy, dangerous and sexy 11-year old boy in world. The entire cast is awesome, it's funny as hell in parts, and it never ones feels the need to throw in any stupid anachronisms to get a laugh (one of my major complaints about modern Disney films).

And yes, Never-Never Land bears a certain resemelnce to Black Rock City, spiritually if not physically. Hook's pirate crew would look right at home on La Contessa.

After the movie, there was a group of eight and nine year olds leaping about the lobby trying to fly...

I'm all choked up. I remember a couple of skits from the Muppet Show with the jug band. MAN the music they had was so great!

I have several episodes on tape, but had to cancel my Time-Life subscription when I got laid off a couple of years ago)

Is it an album, or a movie?

I just moved "Deadly Drifter" and "Greaser's Palace" to the top of my Netflix list.

Maybe we could set up a movie night next week? I'm in SF, will happily host. My roommate brought an enormously large TV with him when he moved in.

Anybody interested?

Apocalypse Now.
The theatrical release, not the redux.

Blade Runner.
Especially the scene in the Replacant designer's loft.

I would have to go with MARS ATTACKS by Tim Burton. You will note that the desert scene looks like BRC. Also the creative mind of Burton reminds me of the creative mind of all my fellow burners.

That's a matter of opinion. Of course, it is amazing what hunger makes us do. You might have something there.
