drifting on to "celebrities at Burning Man" I saw Larry Hagman on the Playa in 2005. He camped with his brother who was a member of Camp Papillion. A camp member told me this early in the week and I chalked it up to leg-pulling BS until I saw him just off the Esplanade posing with a huge group in a camp photo. That was a bit surreal.

Also Joan Baez was at 2005. Nothing against Joan or the whole 60's thing, but that was something I hope doesn't become a trend. It would take several hours for me to adequately express my thoughts on why that seem incongruous. Maybe its because she really neglects the potential of the cowbell inher performances.

Suppose I've driven that joke into the ground farther than a piece of re-bar.

Confirm: that was really Larry Hagman. He came with his nephew. Dug the art, loved La Contessa.

Confirm: Joan Baez sang "Amazing Grace" from the Temple Bus at the temple during Reverend Billy's eulogy for New Orleans back in '05. Forgot that one.

A campmate in '05 said he was sitting around Sunday evening in a chillout space listening to Sting play a guitar for a little while. But he said the party got started when Dicky walked in.

Not sure if its true or not, but it makes a good story.

Todd is God

Post by Troy Van Berry » Sat May 12, 2007 11:18 pm

Todd Rundgren has been to BM more than once. In 2001 he was at the Tiki camp and played on a little stage in the camp. It was absolutely unreal, seeing my all time fav perform at BM. Then to top it all off him, his wife & kid hung out with us on our Playa vehicle, the Luminator during the burn, his kid actually climbed up & watched the burn with us! I will never forget that night! We were the '55 Ford orange truck with the big platform with truss, lights & and geni with the sound & light show that sat in front of the Man each night and illuminated the white pedeastal that year, the first of the non hay bale ones. On the 1st Sat & Sunday nights when they hadn't got the neon up yet, we lit up the man with Martin Roboscan 1220's & projected all kinds of cool color scemes and gobo patterns that night, and got a friendly visit & thank you from the Hatted one himself. The man has never been seen in such unique light again. Quite a year it was, one that we will never experience again. :D :D

all you need to do is find a open jam bar somewhere near the playa and you'd be suprised who you'll see pop up after 12:am.

But I'm not saying because BM is not about them its about YOU!

Joan Baez played at the Temple in 2005. Sting attended and played in 2005 as well, the performance I know of was with Miracle Gro. There are a few others I know of, but can't think of any offhand.

DJ's are another story. So many I don't know of, but several that I do know. Adam Freeland is a regular, as is Freq Nasty. Tiesto and Oakenfold have been mentioned already. Other internationally reknown names include Stanton Warriors, Lee Coombs, Tipper, Lawgiverz and a few others. I'm working to get more DJ's and bands involved with the event - not because I want to build up the spectacle of the event or give it more of a concert vibe, but because performing and staging an event on the playa is a magical experience, and some of the people I've had the good fortune to work with or meet strike me as the sort of people who 'get it' and whose lives and whose art would be forever changed for the better for having had the experience and participated in the event.

Oh, I can take--in limited doses--Bono grunting and waving flags at Red Rocks and including the words "barbed wire" and "torn" in almost EVERY song, but there is a special place in hell for the smug, narcisstic erudition that is Sting. Synchronicity--hey look everyone, I read Carl Jung!

Sting haters, unite! His music really sucks, too.

I'd been told that Smashmouth played at BM a few years back, but I can't confirm it so it's just as likely to be true as the legend of the Playa Chicken.

Oh wait... the Playa Chicken IS as real as Jesus.

If Bono really wants to be the next Ian Curtis, he should be dead by now. C'mon, folks, lets take this thread all the way to the bottom. How come no one mentioned the Beatles reunion in '98?
