We had a satellite phone in our camp.

There are one or two small companies out there where for ~$1000/year you get unlimited calling.

Pretty much anyone who had a legit reason to call outside the event could do so. This usually involved on checking up on family (parents, wives/husbands, kids). More calls were made by strangers than by anyone in our group. I'd say almost 10:1 in fact.

It seemed that folks from overseas were especially appreciative.

We had a camp of about 15 family and friends. Our immediate family has Motorola T7200 walkie talkies that we've had for a few years -- as we often ride on-road and off-road together.

We didn't really bother using them at BM, but I did turn mine on just for the heck of it and there were PLENTY of open channels. So the advice about not being able to use walkie-talkies is complete BS, especially if you have a good set with sub-channels.
