This whole thing about sitting down so you see better?
I don't buy it and neither do the people that want you to sit down.
Naturally everybody offered to let shorter people stand up front, but that's not what they're after.
They want to stretch out and take up room while thousands of people behind them are pushed further away, just for their comfort.
I sat down and instead of looking between people's heads or up over them (it's a big burn, after all) like everybody else, I couldn't see one fucking thing because no one can see sitting down, so they are up on their knees NOT SITTING DOWN.
Am I really two feet shorter than everyone else when I sit down?
And thanks, the pain in my knee became intermittent after a few months.
All it does is inconvenience other people in a limited space for a large crowd.
The only people with a completely unobstructed view are the people in the first row.
Real simple.
The only people sitting should be those that can't stand.
Plenty of room to set up chairs on the esplanade, which is where my camp stayed my first year, instead of going to the burn and dealing with this.
If you want to sit, plenty of room there.
You can even stay out of the dust.
They had a much better view than I did too.
That's as close as I get now.
If anyone thinks it's such a great idea, bring enough chairs for everybody and I'll happily sit down.
Anyway, it's a burn, not a rainbow circle.
If you're too bored or toasted to stand and watch, there are pretty colors all over black rock city.
And it's always comfy to watch on the telly while you stretch out on the floor.
Maybe that's the venue for the lounging burners?
What does this mean?
My point is, why do you think it would make a difference?
It's level ground.
If you want to sit and people tolerate you taking up extra room, get there early.
Actually, getting pushed further back by people spreading out, does affect your view for the worse, giving you a shallower angle to look up at what is going on.
That's why the man is tall, so people can see it.
Naturally it would be nice if everyone that came early sat down for your front row view to be perfect.
I'm guessing there's another row behind you too.
If you want people sitting down, just arrange for those who came early to stand in your new front row in front of you.
That would be fair enough.
Or provide chairs.
But it's the people wanting to come late and spread out on a blanket that squeal the most about how everyone "knows" you have to sit down.
Like I said, it was painful, I couldn't see anything and I don't go back.
And neither do most people I know because of that crap.
There was NO courtesy involved at all.
So don't bullshit me about that.
Actually there were quite a few people cheering for the folks that didn't arrange themselves at the whim of the latecomers.
And it is a better view sitting down if you sort of stand up and block everyone's view behind you.
It was enlightening how many assholes show up.
It left a bad taste in my mouth and, yes, I was in the mood for something very unpleasant.
It would have brightened up the evening considerably.
When I was forced to move for the third time, I stepped on someone's tail in the crowd (yes they were wearing a long tail in that crowd) and they decided my apology wasn't enough and kept insulting me.
As annoyed as I was by that point with assholes, I offered the alternative of violence.
He decided to keep insulting me, but at an ever increasing distance.
But I would much prefer attempted violence to the guaranteed pain of sitting on the ground.
It is always an option.
It's all really stupid.
It is FLAT.
It's a crowd.
You have to look over people.
Basic stuff.
It's level ground.

Center Camp and Esplenade, but I still like to be there.. Although, wen the man falls, I retreat. Watching the burn is the best part..and when you have assholes standing..with bikes up front its a little upsetting. And many of them walked their bikes to camp. Their bikes have no place in that crowd, to begin with...and sitting in the dust? Fuck, you've been living in it all week..
anything worth doing is worth overdoing..
