Experience with Hot Glue
Re: Experience with Hot Glue
If you are all set to use a hot glue gun, how about having a moop bucket next to the art, and then once a day glue all the moop to the project? If you are adept at using a hot glue gun, you can avoid the glue moop issue. Just a thought.

Do not, under any circumstances, do this.Skuzzy61 wrote:how about having a moop bucket next to the art
Your art piece will turn into a trash can for whoever is walking by. Remember - there are zero public trash receptacles at Burning Man; Leave No Trace means you take out everything you brought in with you. The problem with this is that people are drunk, tired, lazy, rude, etc (ie: human), and are more than happy to leave bits of MOOP in your camp "by accident" (beer cans, used containers, paper plates, more things than you can possibly think of) - having a bucket out says "Hey! I'd love to take your trash off the playa for you!". Any MOOP left at your art becomes your responsibility, just like any MOOP in your camp is. A bucket would just be a magnet for it.

Skuzzy you're actually pretty close to a great idea.
Use the glue gun to glue the moop to the person who left it!

Re: Experience with Hot Glue
Indeed, I had a bag to hold the clips to hang my art on my project, a few spare clips in it so others could hang art too. Filled with trash day one.
Had gifts racks for a few years, always had a little trash. If I left them out after Saturday noon, they collected trash and everyone's open food and thrashed costumes. This year my gifting box had a bag of sample size lotions and shampoos, most of them had been opened and used. No way were they going to be wanted as gifts.
A girl was sitting in our shade area, just needed a spot to rest and cool off for a bit. Opened her pack and started putting her trash into our kitchen trash can. It wasn't much, but she didn't ask. I considered it quite rude. Always ask before adding your MOOP to the receptacles of others.

Don't sweat it - what you'll come to see is that a lot of things that might normally seem like a great idea at home doesn't work well out there. Between the heat and high elevation desert, the high winds, the super-fine alkali dust and other weird factors... stuff can be weird.
That's one of the reasons ePlaya can really rock. Questions get asked, and playa veterans can weigh in with their experiences and advice (good, bad, or hilarious) and hopefully help you to figure out solutions to whatever you're working on.

Oh I am not bothered by my ignorance. One cannot learn until one acknowledges ignorance.
We all come into this world rather ignorant. How ignorant we are when we leave is up to us.
I appreciate people calling out my ignorance. It gets me one step closer to knowing everything there is to know about everything.

I doubt anyone actually knows everything about anything, but you have to have a goal to reach for. Why not aspire to knowing it all? Even though I will not live long enough to get there, the ride will be awesome!FIGJAM wrote:"I know a little bit about a lot of things. I know a lot about a few things. Because ANY hard and fast belief gets in the way of learning about changes to the current knowledge.

Re: Experience with Hot Glue
Doesn't this question come up every year? So here's the thing...I have various kinds of hot glue to use in various guns. I'll glue all manner of things and hang them in my tent all week. I'll also subject them to wind, (in a net bag) and rough treatment. Each item will be labeled with a sharpie as to what glue was used. How hard could it be to put this issue to rest? It will be asked every year because of the influx of new blood.

Re: Experience with Hot Glue
I appreciate the positive insights and ideas here. I have solutions to every issue posed, except the moopiness of the glue guns. I've been burning for many years, but shockingly, never have I ever hung out on the open playa and used a glue gun. Glue drops can be dealt with a tarp, or plywood platform. But it's the glue strings that are created that can fly away that have me stumped. Maybe a combination of a plywood platform with a small fence around it would trap the flying strings of glue? I think I'm just going to try standing out in my yard on a windy day with a glue gun and see what happens.
