Some sweet Theme Camp projects on Kickstarter

I must admit there are some benefits to self-funding a camp.

1. All the infrastructure is MINE! and I use it the rest of the year any way I wish!
2. There is no question who is at the top of the food chain in our theme camp.

3. I get to do it my way, and tell many guests, "Welcome to my perverted mind."

If a camp is donation dependent, who owns the stuff? Who decides who is in charge? Design by committee takes more patience than I think I could bear.

So no complaints! Do what you will and so will we!

Interesting. I like the idea of using Robert E. Howard's stories. But how will you visually create Conan's world for under $5000? CGI?

That's actually a serious question. You might be able to get people to donate the computer time, if you want to go that way - I have noticed that a lot of people in CS seem to be Howard fans.

There is no clue in my mind what creating CGI costs. Although $5k would not touch what I have in infrastructure. It's all relative really. Trish just told me to do everything Burning Man and I did,,,errr do,,, ummmm will,,,, I am!

It's therapeutic really. So there's another benefit. It keeps me out of bars,,,, usually. I cannot wait to come home and see what the Brown Santa brought today! Then I draw and plan for all the variables of placement. Which way could the sun, winds and frontage be located? All those variables and so many possibilities. I lay awake at night thinking about this shit. So costs of money equals time and effort. I put a shit-load of both into it and don't regret one iota.

Last year I had four good ideas for theme camps but didn't know what to do, so I put all of them up on kickstarter with low funding costs thinking the best idea would get the most money, well as it turned out all four of my projects got fully funded and I was at square one again, but with a bunch of cash for free, so I skipped that hot arse desert party and went to Hawaii for free, and still had enough to buy a new tv, thanks kickstarter, and all who supported my travels

We only have one more scene to shoot. Everything is proceeding according to plan.

Kickstarter really is the magic of the internet connecting people. I'm impressed just with what I've seen over the last few months.

Everyone should check out my kickstarter project, all I need is 1500$ to buy a sex swing and hidden security camera system, then the camp would function by itself for free and offer free space at the burningman for people to come use the sex swing, all I need is your financial support for my artistic vision, thank you, praise Alla

My band is coming to Burning Man this year, looking to camps to play at.

We also have a Kickstarter project for our next album, which goes until May 1st, 2011

I looked at Kickstarter to help fund The Dusty Swan (nee Ludo O'Dillo's), the irish pub. The feeling I got was that Kickstarter was definitely geared toward art projects. However, I have since seen several theme camps use it, and apparently with success. And what is art, anyway? We have built a quaint Irish pub in the middle of the desert, and hosted some fabulous musicians for live seisiuns.(You can see the video on our site, http://www.thedustyswan.com.) Check it out and tell me if that's not art!

Between the gas to get the truck from Philly to BRC, 10 kegs or more of beer, many cases of Guinness, and enough Jamison's, Bushmills and Fekkin' Irish whiskey for 6 nights of shots and Irish coffee, and you're looking at operating costs of $4,000 and up just for Burning Man. Add in the regionals like Playa Del Fuego and Transformus, and it goes up from there. That's not including any personal or infrastructure costs -I happily bear that in support of my dream.

Our fabulous campers do pay dues, which helps offset some of the cost. And we have a fundraising option on the website. (with a very cool carabiner-handle mug as a thank you gift!) But even with camp dues and a successful fund-raiser, I'm still funding several thousand dollars myself. With a kid heading to college, I have other things I could be doing with that money.

I guess the point of this rambling message is that, ultimately, the responsibility of bringing your dream to the playa rests wth the individual. Pursue whatever means you have at your disposal to fund said dream. Some will support you. Others will call you a capitalist tool selling out. You need a thick skin in this game.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I am going to go check out Kickstarter!

Yeah there are lots of theme camps up there! I don't know if people are still looking at this thread, but I'll put in a plug for our theme camp.

From newbees. Our art is our theme. Self funded, BUT, Huge time, money, energy investment, totally absorbed in getting to BLC. Our theme is our gift. If like minded gift time, energy or money, let your theme grow if you wish. . Yes to kickstarter and to your belief that you are contributing by donating. And, of course, you might be wasting your money. Our long range plan is to remain a nomad theme camp of two!
