Tickets for volunteering

Just curious, but do our Burning Man firemen...the one's that are actually trained and equipped to put out fires and tend the Man's burn in their silver fire retardant suits...get a free ticket?

Fire fighter friend of mine said a friend of his gets a freebie ticket when he vols his fire fighter services...

I've always been under the impression that NO ONE gets a free ticket. There are exceptions?

No one? heh... Lots of people get gift tickets from the org. Mostly setup type people that are on playa weeks before the event to build all that stuff you see out there when people arrive.

Yeah...I guess I shoulda expected that the setup/breakdown crews would be exempt from purchasing a ticket...my hat's off to all those who do the heavy lifting. I also know that a small number of tickets are given as scholarships to those who qualify.

But that still doesn't answer my original inquiry...do fire fighters get a freebie? I'm fine if they do...and I think they should...I just don't know. One of my Burner buds is a physician who vols at Medical...even he's gotta buy a ticket.

The fire crews could be called upon to do some pretty dangerous work (recalling the early Burn one year) and they bring expensive equipment. I'm all for a free pass for them.

Hmmm.. I suspect the LEOs and the Firefighters don't need a ticket to be there since we pay to have them there. Don't know for sure.

I'm surprised the Med team is having to buy a ticket. 0_o

Yes, there are many exceptions. Almost all the free tix are designed to attract people with special skills that are necessary to the event. Some of these are for doing jobs no one wants to do (like Exodus or cleanup/restoration). Sometimes there for things that help keep the whole city working smoothly, so having experienced vols is really beneficial (think Rangers, Gate, DPW, etc)

Departments generally have a few different tools in their belt to make sure they have the staff they need to perform their function. Some, like DPW must pay their people so they get the experience they need, etc.

Once the city got beyond a certain size/scope, the days of just hoping the right people showed up on Monday went out the window.
