Actually, next year will be my first year, barring a miracle (such as a generous settlement offer instead of an insulting one... but that is a long story), so I have a fair amount of time. The yurt is the first one I will attempt to build, since it is the most versatile (sp?).

The PVC&parachute dome was/is my friend's idea. Its lack of longevity might not be that big of a problem if it is easy to build. It is what our bowling alley is supposed to go in (unless we change our mind about our project, in any event, that dome is supposed to be for our project if I am interpretting out plans correctly). My friend wants to sleep in his mini-van, with I think sounds uncomfortable. I want to sleep somewhere where my snoring won't keep others awake, which is why the trailer is attractive. Plus the trailer would solve where to have the kitchen. OTOH, I don't know as I will have the money to build the trailer, even by this time next year, much less the time. (I could write down a pretty long list of what I would like to have for BM, and it would come to considerably more than the $8000 you mentioned! )

Actually, I need to get together with my friend and try to get him to get serious about preparing, since I am not certain what we have as far as materials goes. (For example, I don't think any of us own a camp stove, which could come in handy....)

*snort* Tell me about it. The severance package I got from my former employer was acceptable - until they told us (AFTER we'd signed for it, mind you) that it was treated as a bonus, and as such taxed at 43%.... (Yeah, I'll get most of that back next spring - but I need it NOW, goddamnit.)

I am SO glad not to be working there anymore.

You should base your camp according to the vehicles you have access to. If you get your truck fixed — do the yurt. If all you have is a Mercury Sabre, then go ahead and build the trailer. It won't be as roomy but there's no way you'll be able to haul a yurt in something like that.

As for the bowling alley, you might find a compromise in getting a couple Costco canopies and sticking them end-to-end. You'll have a 10'x40' space which is plenty for a bowling alley; it won't shatter like PVC and will come in cheaper and easier to build than an EMT dome (how's $160 each sound?). They go up quickly, too: you'll have it ready to roll in about an hour. They also serve wonderfully as a windblock so you can park your personal shelters in the lee and have both shade and shelter from the wind.

Keep it in mind in case your friend doesn't deliver on the dome.

Actually, I don't have a truck-- although I am considering one as a "new" vehicle. I REALLY don't trust the Mercury for the trip! The thing has stranded me too many times just being driven around Madison, I don't want to risk it dying on me (again) in the middle of nowhere.... In any event, if I can't get a new vehicle before BM 2005, I will either be in my friend's minivan, or, possibley, a different friend's Kia Sportage. I don't know whether a trailer or yurt would be better on either of these. (My minivan owning friend is thinking of putting our stuff in a trailer, anyway, I suppose a teardrop trailer might be able to hold other structures for the trip. OTOH, a yurt could fit on a normal trailer, or perhaps in the back of the minivan....?)

I don't think we have any CostCo's in these parts, but we have other discount stores which carry canopies, tents, and the like.

The friend I mentioned is having a 4th of July party, and I am hoping to get him to talk about BM so we might actually make some progress on what we need to get done and what we need and what we actually want to do (for example, do we really want to do the bowling alley, or something else?). I'll have to time it right, though, since his July 4th party is one of the few times he allows himself to get really drunk these days...., I plan on joining in, too!

It is a former employer I am having trouble with, too. After over a year's worth of negotiating, and all they offered was $1000 and to retroactively have it that I resigned! I told my union that I wanted some more zeroes added on to the end, BEFORE the decimel point!

In some ways I am glad not to be working there anymore, in other ways I miss the income (almost $4 an hour more than I am getting now), and the benefits (better health insurance, MUCH better retirement, mostly)...
