If it was a "comment", it wasn't Larry Harvey. Any announcement from the Hat would not be buried in a comment section.uncle sticky wrote:Anybody see the comment on the blog attributed to Larry Harvey re: cancellation of the open sale? Doubt it was authentic, but wondered if others saw it too.

The one thing i do not get is why they do not say that the scalpers got the tickets. There was not a 300 % demand in tickets.Yes the scalpers got the tickets.BM.org just handed them the tickets. This is a failure of BM .org but this is what BM.org wanted. The sold and got the money for 40,000 tickets in one day.And the update is bullshit. In short, its not our fault, not enough tickets,we will give tickets to the special people, the rest of you are fucked, plan on next year, but we still don't have a clue on what to do.Great update

Because when the organization is wrong at every turn, the worst thing he can do is come out and say something else that later proves to be also wrong. We'll hear from 'im in a while, once the BMOrg finishes shitting it's collective trousers over the reaction they've gotten and finds a plan.socks wrote:And yes why has not the Hat said a thing or does he even care

In case there's any doubt regarding the lack of authenticity of the "Larry Harvey" comment, please note the following statement made today from the BLM to the Sacramento Bee:
"BLM officials said they have not been approached about expanding beyond the 58,000- person limit for 2012 that is still in the approval process."
For further clarification, please see this statement from Senator Vreenak:

what makes you think they havnt already found a plan?wraith wrote:Because when the organization is wrong at every turn, the worst thing he can do is come out and say something else that later proves to be also wrong. just because they say theyll announce their intentions for stuff in the future? A PR piece that says they are working on solutions doesnt mean they arent already implementing solutions to problems already...
i would imagine they are probably working on putting into place all of their plans, so that they are working at the time of any PR announcement.... why wait for a public announcement before you start addressing things when you can start addressing them right now?
i bet they arent just gonna post an update the day they figure it out and be like 'oh!! ok here's an idea that just came to us!!'
this is big stuff..
crap is surely moving at a crazy pace behind the scenes.. probably more than we know or are told by the PR machine (like any company)
they mentioned an announcement on the 15th? i would think that whatever stuff that gets announced was already being implemented well before that date..
the solutions dont really need to keep up to pace with the PR side of things..
the general public knowing what they are doing, through PR pieces.. might not even really be all that much of a benefit... and may be a distraction....why rush to put out a PR notice when youre busy making shit happen...

some in the community might not agree.. with some demanding apologies..
but i think they are probably responding to the stuff just as quickly as the community is seeing the stuff happen... if not before..
it might have taken a long time for some PR stuff to come out.. with much hand wringing in the community when they saw the amount of tickets they actually received ..but the LLC knew before us what the numbers were like.. and probably started working on solutions even before the random drawing took place.
they are in the drivers seat..
the community at large is the backseat driver..
and they also have elements in the organization who are just as much of the community as we are,.. dont believe that every concern raised with every announcement wasnt raised well before it was put into the offical PR machine and churned out.
The burning man organization has been dealing with a very vocal community who has reacted to decisions of theirs.. both positive and negative... for many years now, they can see everything coming that you can!
and ya know? sometimes even the backseat driver informing the one steering the car that they are about to get creamed by a mac truck wont help them to avoid it.... sometimes you cant avoid it.. because it wasnt your fault to begin with. and it wasnt something you /could/ avoid.

I think a better analogy is sitting at the ER at 2am with your best friend, who you've spent all night trying to convince that shooting himself in the foot is a dumb idea, as he waits for a doc to take a look at the hole in his foot. And all the time, he's just whining 'I don't understand how it could have gone so wrong...'lemur wrote:

Really, you want to know why I defended the lottery? because I think that the collective decisions of the community are crappy. The llc has made many mistakes over the year, and I have my quarrels with them, but "the community" strikes me as a whiny, manipulative, impulsive, unforgiving mass of near constant, seething anger. Individually, we're fine and better than fine. Collectively, we are a giant baby crawling all over the floor, wrecking everything. At least the llc is a smaller bunch of people and consist substantially of the same persons every year, which means that there's at least some learning going on. The community seems to still need toilet training just as much as when I first went to the playa...
In my cranky opinion.

Cryptofishest- I totally agree. What kind of mess would this be if the collective voice of eplaya had been the driving force behind the ticket distribution system. Admittedly, there have been a few reasonable ideas put forth here, but the majority have just been crazy.
I for one am pretty satisfied with the bmorg and their efforts to do the best they can with a very difficult situation.
