Not "serious" music -- kind of like what people were saying about jazz music at the turn of the century, or rock-and-roll, or change-ups during the classical music era, or basically any new genre. Then, in a total irony: despite people calling the new music trash, we see the majority of the old standard conferred to the garbage heap, with a few gems preserved for posterity. And so it repeats.
